Why are more Polish girls marrying Americans? [77]
Also, you seem to assert that Hollywood only celebrates the rich
Hey, bud!
No, I don't. I'm not saying that American movie makers produce crap only. Moreover most of films I like are American ones. The crux of my notion was not to evaluate the American movie or show business industry on the whole but to show that the American TV shows and films were the lion share against the background of the whole Russian (or any else) TV.
The problem is that old Russian or Polish babushka's may tell you "
okejushki" instead of "dobro" which is largely used as a theme to laugh at by Russian humorists.
Honestly, I find this whole "empire" and "brain washing" notion fairly amusing especially when espoused by someone educated like yourself
Thanks for kind words even though I think I didn't mention any "empire"-stuff at the time. Yet I do believe we are both "empires" and both our governments do "brainwashing" which is indispensable if you want to have an empire - it's like a glue to stick people of different nationalities and different turn of minds together, to rally them around one idea. And at that point I find the US very similar to Russia, which I've already said for many times.
Who forces you to watch and believe in these movies?
True. I understand what you're saying and largely share that, but... You can't speak on behalf of all American, neither can I on behalf of the Russians. Honestly I doubt we can go as people with a typical mindsets respectively American and Russian one. In fact the main purpose of the government is to win over the mass not particularly you or me. We've got a commonly used saying: "odin v pole ne voin" which may be literally rendered as "one man in the field is no warrior". I believe you won't argue the fact that mass is strongly affected by media and we can't actually blame them for that nor we can label them "stupid" or something, since they do not basically have a choice. The standard day of many Russians and Americans is "sleep-work-watch TV set", thus their perception of the world deeply depends on the info they're being fed with. Speaking for myself I can't say I'm free of stereotypes either. I'm to some extent affected as welll...
And I will probably say it again... I do not evaluate those TV programs, whether they're good or not. Some are obviously good, some are not (I btw love your discovery and animal planet channels, I even ordered them here in Russia to be able to watch them while I am at home). My point was that worldwide promotion of one nation alters the cultural vector of another ones.
Russian how stupid they are but the American doesn't really subscribe to Hollywood's "pie in the sky" sentiment
No need to listen to them, since they are stupid themselves if they go on such a generalization.
Do you think life is easier in the States?
I would say it's just different. What I can say for sure is that you've got a lot more opportunities for personal growth. For instance in Rus-Amer company I work for - direct employees can take an additional education for free (the company pays), a few take the advantage of the opportunity though.
I'm not saying life in the US is easy.
