History / Poland and why in the past it was so many times attacked [16]

Well, Henri de Valois was a dead loss who skipped back to France as soon as possible. Stefan Batory was a soldier and was OK for beating Ivan of Russia, but did bring in conscription and Cossacks.
Bringing in the Swedish Wasa's resulted in Baltic wars, land losses and more migrations.

Henri de Valois was too short here to make any impact, be it positive or negative.

Stefan Batory did bring in Cossacks, but I don't understand what it has to do with him being a foreigner.

Bringing a foreigner to run the country doesn't automatically have to be a bad idea. As a Briton I’m sure you are more than aware of it. Jagieło was an outsider and yet started the so called "golden age" in polish history. Choosing Batory was also a good idea. The problem wasn’t choosing a foreigner, but choosing a foreigner that treated polish nation as a way to capture his motherlands crown, which was the case with Wasa's.

Real Estate / Foreigners: Please don't buy Polish Land! [823]

WTF? All parts of Poland, just as the name suggest, belong to Poland! As for Szczecin never being a polish city, Michal, you really need to make your homework:

We can't deny that for the few last hundreds of years Szczecin was a German city, and we never could hide the German influences in that city, but it's a Polish city now and it's time to write polish history in it. Germans didn't have any problems with conquering this land and making it their own... I don't see why we should have those problems. Szczecin is now Polish... end with the discussion! :)

News / Dealing with constant insults against Polish [323]

How could anybody trust someone like Hitler. He wanted more than Europe. He was developing the atomic bomb. He had rockets that would soon reach the US. If it looks like **** - smells like **** - then it probably is ****.

And how could anybody trust Stalin?

Obviously inviting foreigners to be head of state is a poor tactic for maintaining independance.
(in times past, i.e pre 20th century)

What exactly do you have in mind? Electing Jegieło and Batory was a pretty good decision. (Although I agree that offering Polish crown to Wasa's was a mistake. :) )

Life / Moving a family to Poland, any info, advice needed [51]

By te way your discouraging comments are really sad for people like me who want to do something good in Poland and come back to their home country with new insight and ideas.

Speachless, I wouldn't bother with Polak. It’s a waste of your time and energy. As for moving to Poland maybe you should take things slowly. Live here for some time before your permanent move and see if you like it. Good luck. :)

Life / Polish denial of reality - is it a national trade? [117]

Matyjasz,

just a simple statistics here: I have created 24 new threads, you: 1

Maybe just one, but a damn good one! :)

Just a short comment, since I really don't have the time (no, I am not trying to avoid anything here).

I didn’t doubt it for a second. Looking forward for your proper answer.

if you cant go to the kitchen, turn on the tap and run yourself a glass of clean drinking water then you are not in a first world country

I don't care if Poland is a first or second world country. What I know is that it definitely isn't a third world one.

-edit-
Did it sound rude? I hope not as it wasn't mine intention. Just to set the record straight. :)

daffy, I never pretended it was different. Don't take my comments about the 1989 "revolution" as an anti-EU statement. I just wanted to confront the myth that Lech Wałęsa and Co fought for capitalism and free market, that’s all. I voted for joining EU and I haven’t changed my mind.

Life / Polish denial of reality - is it a national trade? [117]

I got inspired by some of the forum memebers who, for some reason, due to many factors express a lot of denial when it comes to Polish reality.

What posters do you have in mind Miranda? Polak? LS? Ola123? Could you give some examples, because I can't find those posters and those posts that you are talking about? On contrary, I see a lot of posts that try to show Poland as a third world country. I think that a more interesting topic would be "Why people (notice I didn't limit it only to poles) like to put every view in to extreme?"

I just wanted to open a disscussion and not to show Poland as a b&w country for that matter. My intention was to bring attention to issues people in Poland are struggling with, especially during the transition times. If the country has a large group of young people living for EU in order to seek a different life, or to simply make some money and return, there will be some consequences - good, bad and somewhere in between.

I don't see what one has to do with the other. :(

PS: I know that your not trying to bash Poland so please don't take it as a personal attack on your person.

and replace it with??? (dignity is not a form of government)

"A socialism with a human face", as some veteran of the events of 1989 described it. The referendum of which to join or not EU was carried out over a decade later, so let us not mix these two events.

PS: daffy, I'm not saying that the decision of accessing EU was a wrong one. I was just simply trying to explain that in 1989 nobody actually believed that communism would fall. Nobody was thinking about capitalism, but rather about improving their lives. Basically people weren't even prepared for the things that were to come...

probably he meant Independence

That and no rationing of food, no secret police, stores where you actually can by something, etc... You know, a decent life. Godne życie...

I see that the attention of forum members shifted from Polish immigrants in the UK to foreign speculators in Poland. Nice. :)

Ola, your posts remind me of a certain participant of this forum... Actually, where is Freddy? :(

I can not understand the Polish mentality. Capitalism is the very thing that Poland wanted.

Not quite. Poles wanted their dignity back. They wanted to free themselves from Soviet influence. They didn't expect that the result of their actions would be the fall of communism.

History / Poland and why in the past it was so many times attacked [16]

Because of German "drang nach osten" and because we were a part of eastern gate to Europe.

PS:

In history, we hear about Poland being attacked so much. Well, my friends always laugh at me cause I jokingly get offended. Well, one of them said cause Poland was so easy to take over.

If it would have been so easy we would share the fate of other Slavic tribes that settled west from Oder river. Instead, Poland not only stopped the German "drang nach osten" in the XI century, but even managed to acquire a strong political position from XIV to XVII century. Taking into consideration that we were basically surrounded by such nations like Germans, Turks, Swedes, Mongols/Tartars and Russians, that’s not bad innit? :)

Love / Polish Girl and American Guy? [33]

true enough.. ive witnessed this firsthand in much poorer countries than Poland..but most girls are also savvy. As in the movie, its all a question of economics.

Yep. That doesn't make me feel better though. :)

Love / Polish Girl and American Guy? [33]

Hehehe... :) Apparently not. But on the other hand this whole “sexual" tourism pisses me off. Some time ago I was forced to "teach some manners" a German guy, who let's say, behaved very disrespectful towards some polish ladies. It seems that some people forget how to behave abroad, especially when they visit a poorer country. That's probably why I didn't feel sympathetic towards the main characters in that movie. :) Still, listen to your boyfriend. Slovakia is very beautiful. You won't regret it.

Life / Real life of a Polish (the Great Woman, or even the Humble Man) :) [20]

I think living together before getting married is an excellent idea. 50% of marriages in Canada end in divorce! Why? Because people get married too quickly - they don't spend enough time getting to know each other and then they realize they're not compatible. Then starts the stress, lawyers, ....

I would also add that people in the west have a different , a much more lenient, approach towards marriage. Basically a lot of them treats it similar to a product in a supermarket. When some problems occur, when there is something they don't like, instead of fighting for the relationship, they just give up on it, and search for another one. An "old fashioned" couple would have fought for their feeling's. Personally I can see how that attitude will catch on in Poland. Actually, it already has. :)

News / Dealing with constant insults against Polish [323]

If Britain had been defeated, the US would have gone round the back door, joined the Russians making a combined thrust from the East - and of course the soft under belly (Italy) having first defeated Rommel in North Africa

How do you know that they wouldn't accept Germany's reign in Europe?

Study / Comparing Educational Standards in Poland vs other countries [88]

I know. It's just that I have read your post regarding the misusing "than" and "then" just after I wrote that post. Quite a timing, innit? :)

There is also the language problem when choosing a university in a non-English speaking country.

Yeah, that would be another problem.

Study / Comparing Educational Standards in Poland vs other countries [88]

I don't think many people would want to go to Poland for a Degree!

That actually has more to do with the prestige of western countries (= prestige of western universities) rather then with educational level displayed by them, or by their eastern equivalents.

-edit-
Yes, I know I have troubles with "than" and "then" Bubba. :)

Food / Organic Food in Poland? [14]

Every food in Poland is basically organic. One advice for you, in the middle of winter avoid perfect looking veggies imported from Spain, etc that are being sold in "polish" chain-stores and you'll be OK. :)

Life / Black American Living In Poland [283]

If today they are not as smart as whites, I would think there are factors involved besides race. This includes malnutrition and lack of proper education, among other reasons.

Yep, I agree.

As for being proud of being European, yep, there's a lot to be proud of, but I don't understand why we should put down other nation's/race's/nationalities... Romans didn't think exactly high about our forefathers. Comparison of those cultures at that time doesn't turn out very positive for us, but our forefathers survived, strengthened learned and finally improved. What makes you think that it's not going to happen with Hispanics, etc?

News / Dealing with constant insults against Polish [323]

The US supplied 98% of the supplies to the Russians at their Victory at Stalingrad.

98%? :( What are your sources?

There would have been a D-day somewhere else. Thats a real reach. Where there is a will there is a way. Without Britain the war still could have been won.

The question is, would there still be a will after Britain’s defeat?

Language / "polish pig" - is it offensive? [41]

I thought maybe because they attack, like a dog. The ones in LA have a bad reputation, for doing that.

Nah, here it's because they don't think but obey the orders. :)
