Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane [48]

I was in Zakopane and Slovakia last weekend
(I will open a new thread about Slovakia soon).

I had some guests from The U.S.A to impress and boy oh boy!, did Zakopane do the trick :)

The visibility was excellent, hence the best photo I have taken of the Tatras so far :)

Eating, listening to live music and drinking, a great time was had by all.

News / Chairman of TVP flies the racist flag for Poland [51]

You mean do I not treat people differently because of their passport? Of course I do not treat them differently because of their nationality.

I misunderstood.

If you think that I hate everything you need to read more of my writing about Poland.

You were always very helpful (with no BS).
Maybe your "controversial" threads get more press, create more discussion and attack/defence and that is what I have been seeing more of.

I didn't mean it as a personal attack, just wanted to read something you liked, that's all.

the weather, the opportunities and the beer.

YeaY! thanks :)
(easily pleased, am I not ha ha ha, I have been having a shite day, ah well got things done anyway).

PM me your email address and I’ll send it to you.

I'll do that now, thanks.

News / Chairman of TVP flies the racist flag for Poland [51]

You're reading the wrong forum. There is very little to like in Polish politics (as with politics in most countries) and not much to like in Polish history over the last 300 years (unless you enjoy heroic failures).

Could not the same be said for every country on the planet?.

I challenge anyone to state that their country has a likeable political leadership or have a blameless history over the past 300 years.

Yes every country does but most countries have the sense to keep such arses away from positions of power. Poland however installed a fundamentalist zealot as minister of indoctrination, er, sorry, I mean minister of education.

HHhhmmm "Every country has the good sence..." I don't believe you believe that.
it seems that the least qualified get the job, from practically all countries, wouldn't you say?.
I am always hearing stories (I have never cared to find out the validity) about the royal family in England talking about the natives in Africa or China in a derogatory way.

I don't feel proud of anything which is Polish or any other nationality. I take pride in the things I have done, not the things which other people did, no matter what passport they hold.

Is that not a double edged sword?.
If you don't feel proud no matter what passport someone holds.
Does that not also mean you do not feel, resentment/anger/ashamed or just negative towards people's misdoings despite their passport?.
And of course you should be proud of your achievements in life but it reads like you live here in Poland and well... hate it.. hate everything about it.

I use the word hate because I sence some emotional link to your dislikes and criticisms.
I know some of my posts make it look like I work for the Polish tourist board, I just think there is enough negativity on this forum.

But your threads are different, you are intelligent and usually have something to say.
I would still like to see a photo of the tomb stone door mat, just out of curiosity.
OK, all that aside ha ha ha, tell us three things you enjoy/like about Poland, come on, please?.

I think there are several phases to settling in a new country.

Made me think of this (eDITED VERSION OF THE 10 STEPS OF GRIEF).
1. SHOCK 2. EMOTIONAL RELEASE 3. PREOCCUPATION WITH THE COUNTRY 4. SYMPTOMS OF SOME PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL DISTRESSES 5. HOSTILE REACTIONS TOWARDS THE COUNTRY 6. DEMANDING APOLOGIES (GUILT)7. DEPRESSION 8. WITHDRAWAL 9. THE SUBJECT BEGINS TO RE-ENTER RELATIONSHIPS 10. RESOLUTION AND READJUSTMENT TO REALITY.

But in fairness, I used to live in a country I absolutely hated (no names :)
My quality of life was zero and I am so so so glad to be out of there.
I was stuck there for 2 years, I had very little option in the matter.
And if the country had a forum like this, while I was living there, I would have been a lot more aggressive in my comments than Harry's are about Poland.

People come on here quite often from England telling Poles not to complain when living in "their" country and some ass might be tempted to say this to Harry, truth is, it is his right to have his opinions, negative or otherwise.

I would just like to hear something from him that he genuinely likes about Poland

News / Chairman of TVP flies the racist flag for Poland [51]

Hi Harry,

I would love to read something genuinely positive about Poland from you, please?.
I know you live here and have become a bit of a hard-liner pointing out flaws about particular things, which I actually enjoy some of the time. At least it creates debate and discussion.

When I first joined this forum, I liked reading your no BS, very helpful facts on certain laws, things to do and ways to do them, which I have not read in a while from you (perhaps it I'm not reading the correct threads?).

Every country has these ass's, how they ever got into Diplomatic circles is worrying.
And it is not a bad thing you do, after all we must be critical.
It is just I would love a list of things that you really genuinely enjoy and are proud of, that are 100% Polish.

Best regards,
SeanBM.

P.S. excuse me if I am going off topic here but I mean my comments to be made about the bigger more general topic.

Titled "Harry only sees bad things in Poland".

News / Economic Worries in Poland?? hahaha [10]

A bit of perspective : 1 Polish zloty = 0.204864487 British pounds

1000 Złoty is 205 pound sterling.

Will be really funny when in 2 weeks time the poor sap that spent 1,000s of zlotys on his credit card loses his job!

I wouldn't say it would be funny, not even in a low sarcastic sence.

Just because people are blindly spending it doesn't mean there aren't problems with the economy...

Should we not spend money?.

Media Markt wanted to encourage people to buy from them by dropping their prices.
People bought at a seizable discount AND I am kickin meslef because I bought an LCD T.V. (not for myself) and a pen drive not knowing the sale was coming.

You have a point but not from the correct perspective, in my opinion.
Banks here, probably because of their reluctance to give mortgages which is a huge part of their profits are pushing smaller loans on people here.

I got a credit card (I did not ask for) in the post with 10,000 Zloty on it.

I am not an economist (obviously) but it seems that there is a big grey area in between spending money therefore generating cash flow, stimulating business and blowing money you don't have on something you don't need.

I see in Ireland some people threw away insane amounts of money that wasn't theirs, on things they really did not need at astronomical prices.

I see people here in Poland, still being very practical, discounts of 22% is substantial.

I understand that "need" is a subjective word.

Water filter for a fridge, 4gig pen drive, new dvd player.
Cost 472PLN or 97 Pounds (having saved 22%).

How many of you have a water filter for a fridge, 4gig pen drive, new dvd player in total costing 97 Pounds sterling?.

Prices of electronics and kitchen appliances are the same price here as in London.
Consider the wage and this is disproportionate.

==============================================

Hi ShellyS, miss me? MWwaaaa!

==============================================

So your economic observations of Poland come down to one days shopping in Media Market?

Good question.
It would be short sighted to think that the "never ending economic tigers" are never ending.

In all this it seems that a lot of economists are baffled as to the real way things have gone, both here and abroad.

Poland is still quite underdeveloped and while other countries are falling down the stairs of their economy, Poland seems to be falling up (all paradoxes intended).

I am still mystified as to why, although it has become more difficult to get a mortgage for an apartment or house, rents are decreasing or staying the same in some areas?.

Perhaps less tourists freeing up accommodation and the landlords are lowering prices to make their accommodation more attractive?.

Travel / Holiday in Poland advice? Sights, some photography, look around etc. [4]

Hello Rosamira,

And welcome to the Polish Forums.

- Should I go alone, or travel with a friend?

Either, it is up to you.
If you wish to do extensive travelling in the country side it might be better to bring a friend for company.
Polish people speak English more in the bigger cities.

- What mode of transport? Bus? Train?

All modes of transport are good, I would recommend buying a bike and biking it.

- How is Poland expense-wise? Is it an expensive place to travel in?

It is not expensive in comparison to London, it is bloody cheap in comparison to London :)

- Any dangers I should know of?

.I would say NO.
The usual applys at night near bars in the big cities but common sence is enough.

- How friendly are you guys? People over here in London can be pretty terse with strangers, especially foreigners. ;_;

This is a good question, people from the west often talk about how "unfriendly" Easteners are but it is not true.
People here do not smile with their mouths but with their eyes.
Eye contact is much more important here than in London (if you know what I mean).

- How many people speak English? Will it be a problem if I don't speak Polish (other than a few guidebook phrases)?

In the cities all hotels/restaurants/ and most of the people can speak English, in the country side, only some young people (I would say).

But all you need is a few guidebook phrases and a spring in your step and you'll be grand.

I am from Dublin and Live near Krakow. We can advise you better, if you tell us more about your interests, hobbies and preferences.

I like your attitude, Ibiza with drinking mates would be hell on earth for me.

cherry trees.

Absolutely spectacular.
I am a city boy meself but those cherry blossoms are breath taking. They are ending that time now.
I have the peach tree, blackberry and grapevines (planted at the same time as Osiol's garden thread) coming up nicely. Along with the already existing, apple and cheery trees.

I still have apply Jam from last year's batch.
The peach and grapes will take a while but I can wait :)

Poles flee N. Irleand homes after World Cup riots.
Jeez, no surprise there, I live in Poland.
And if ever my home was attacked like that , on those terms , I would flee.
People with families in foreign countries attacked at home, would leave, of course.

Always level headed, informed and you have good taste in films/documentaries.
Just an out of the blue type question, do you work in the film industry yourself?.

History / An apology to Poland from Australia [55]

By the way, Steve and I have settled out differences and decided to settle down for a beer.

i think I understand your point but as an English man, is your disagreement with McCoy's, Harry's opinion or both?. That was the bit, I found unclear.

An apology to Poland from Australia

No doubt Australians members will post here also apologising for the actions of Australia.

Stop talking about people as though their opinions and their culpability for wrong-doings of the past are dictated by what country they happen to come from.

Osiol, is this a response to Harry's thread?.

a spell in the armed forces might teach you

I have to ask, were you ever stationed in Ireland?.
There was a thread, when I first started this forum, and some guy went on about Ireland, the north to be exact.
I was just wondering if it was you?.

I have come to expect, nationalism/patriotism from a forum that has a nation in it's title.

ww2australia.gov.au
This next bit i thought was interesting.
ww2australia.gov.au/wardeclared/ - Australia at war 3 September 1939

aussies sincerely disliked brits

There could well have been, of course.
Plenty of "prisoners" hated Britain.

No doubt Australians members will post here also apologising for the actions of Australia.

It strikes me as strange that you are looking for an apoligy from Australians.

News / Lech Wałęsa threatens to leave Poland [30]

My point was that Poland only seems to want to chase Jews, never Catholics who committed the same crime.

That is what I understood but I do not know anything about Jews, so I went kind of off your point.
The only time I hear or see anything about Jews is people celebrating Jewish culture in Krakow and a lot of Jew hating nonsense on here.

News / Lech Wałęsa threatens to leave Poland [30]

he's directly responsible for freedom of poland.

I have met many Poles who do not think so.
Wałęsa has become the poster boy for the solidarity movement in the "west".
Personally, I don't care so long as Poland is free.
I think as far as commie hunting, there are probably bigger fish to fry.

can't find any time or energy to to chase the Catholic Poles who were involved in Stalinist crimes.

This is indeed interesting, Poland came down hard on the Nazis but not so hard on the Soviet communists.
I know that your point was about Jews and I am adding to it in a slightly different direction (I know nothing about Jews).

I think for many there is still a deep fear, that people could "disappear" if they talk out against communism, even to this day, like back in the, not so good old days.

You get the feeling people are depending too much on technology, rather than good old, tried and tested, common sence.

"Robert Jones , South Yorkshire, said he trusted his navigational system and continued to follow it when it told him the steep, narrow footpath he was driving on was a road."

I actually heard that, when I was there, you just jogged my memory.

The Swedish word is "Barn"

Yes, exactly, in Norwegian too.

"Melk", in English "milk", not such a great difference but the way it is pronounced is the same.

east coast is where most of the viking settlements were, I imagine.

And trading routes, Dublin is a Viking town.

Orkneys and Shetlands actually belonged to Norway for a while.

How'd they loose them?.

i would have to produce DNA for an ID card.

Wow, i never heard of that.

i am worried because the government is known for misplacing sensitive information.

Well your DNA is every part of you, your hair, for example.
It doesn't matter if it is misplaced.

Although, have you seen the film "Gattaca"?.

It must be, I better get cracking,

Not so long ago, I was hatched....

I bet it is something really clever and easy.

Biotechnology, Biofuel, B.O.

But for citizens to produce it, it sounds like an I.D. card.

In this sentence the most unusual word is "braw".
In Norwegian "bra" pronounced "braw", means "good".

I am of course just speculating but thousands of years of trade must have left some traces in the language.

When I sailed from Bergen, Norway to The Shetland Islands.
I was surprised at the language used, had many Norwegian words.

Is Scotland going to get independence?, if so when?.

I am also curious what Scottish and English people think about Scotland being independent?.

Doesn't Scotland have natural resources, like gas and oil off the cost?.
