UK, Ireland / We welcome Polish people to Britain! [224]

Then again, this thread would be about welcoming Polish people to Britain, not the differing opinions regarding Scotland and England...

Do u learn Polish?

I try :) It's a slow process :)

telephone...they were invented by a number of people outside of Scotland.

Read this gmu.edu/departments/seor/student_project/syst101_00b/team18/whoinv.htm

Bell was Scottish but the telephone was patented in US. Still it's inventor was a Scot.

True but then again, every place with a large Polish population will also include some Poles who don't want to integrate. That's life... My Scottish is grand...it's my Polish that lets me down... :)

I've heard that Poles don't want to integrate in Edinburgh that much,

Probably it's true that some Polish people in Edinburgh don't want to integrate but then there are some Scots in Edinburgh who don't want to integrate with anyone either! Even other Scots.

A couple of my friends have picked up words like "aye" and "ken" and "dinnae".

Aye, it's a braw moon licht nicht the nicht! :)

UK, Ireland / The Changing Face of Scotland - we need more immigrants! [178]

there are thousands of it graduates leaving schools, colleges and universities every year. Those positions will be filled by scots.

If that were true...these posts wouldn't be needing to be filled at all. As with these ones...

The real shortage of skills are medical profiles, such as dentistry, doctors and nurses

When will you get the point that there are not enough Scottish people to do these jobs. Hence the title of the thread!

People who do PhD's (doctorates) are often not taken on by companies out of fear or a perception that they lack 'real world' experience

This is most certainly true. Noticable in adverts for high paid jobs where it says "experience is a must".

IT is a good job to get into in Scotland as there is a lacking of IT skilled people.

Life / Legally changing my Polish name to English one? [55]

Years and years ago when I was about 14 or so I decided that my middle name was trendier than my first name and proceeded to tell my parents that I'd like it legally changed. Nuclear explosion doesn't quite cover the reaction but the gist of it was that they weren't happy. So it never happened.

What they did say though (later when it had all calmed down) is that if I preferred my middle name I was most welcome to try and get everyone to call me it. I did try it for a while but most people thought I was a bit insane so I just stuck with my original first name.

Nowadays I am mostly known by two shortened versions of my first name. Even my parents use them.

Love / What is Sexy to men and women in Poland? [101]

Men have the potential to induce great pleasure.
The warmth of their bodies.
The strength of their bodies.
The deepness of their voice.
They think different than a woman, more logical.
They handle situations different than a woman, wanting to fix things.
They are a need, not just a want.
all very sexy

I'm with you there :)

-I find it sexy when a guy can make me laugh without trying...just in the natural things he does. One guy I work with...gets to me every time. Everything he does.. is just .. :)

Oooh Sofi... :D

UK, Ireland / We welcome Polish people to Britain! [224]

Britain is a nation of immigrants and migrants.

Someone speaks sense. From Britain's very roots we are immigrants.

The Polish coming here in large numbers has added to the diversity and with their similarities (enjoying football/alcohol)but also differences(traditional cooking/worship) they set a good example. There is enough work for everyone in the UK but there are sad whingers in every nation. The mostly decent Polish people are welcome here.

I agree with this. If you'd told me a few years ago that I'd be learning to cook Polish food, struggling to learn the Polish language and that some of my best friends would be Polish (or that I'd be a mod on a Polish forum ;) I would have told you "don't talk crazy" :)

I wouldn't have it any other way now.

I am a univeristy student moron, I am not worried about competition from jobs. How many polish have studied scots law.

Well you should be worried about competition for jobs. Just because you'll possibly leave University with a certificate it doesn't guarantee you of anything.

we dont want or need hundreds of thousands of polish cleaners, waiters, shop assistants, administrators etc.

Once again you are completely missing the point of everything. Including the point of this thread. Scotland does need all of the above.

Life / What is a Polish neighbor like? [21]

U can't generalise PolskaDoll

Yes I mean my particular Scottish neighbours. The wife is a gossip who spreads lies (she did it about me) and the husband is an old aggressive drunk.

Let's all be thankful that we don't have gun-toting neighbours like in the US

No, just the odd knife or baseball bat toting one...

I mean Polish neighbours between Polish neighbours (not Poles between a foreigner where the barrier is usually thicker)

It's probably the same for most nationalities. Polish will head for Polish, British for British.

Life / What is a Polish neighbor like? [21]

My Polish neighbour is fine, she mostly keeps to herself, which is fine. It's the Scottish ones we could all live without. The husband is loud and comes home drunk, shouting in the street...sigh.

However, there are a couple of Polish guys living down the street who were loud for a while. They'd put loud music on late at night. Someone called the police though and they came and spoke to them once and there's been nothing since. They're both nice lads.

Yeah the North of Scotland is abandoned. Just some rogue haggis kicking about up there...

History does show some conflict between Scots and English yes. However, the ruling of a quarter of the world was by the British Empire which, strangely, included Scotland.

Scots do welcome Polish people in general but then again, we always have done, just as the Polish welcomed us in Poland. There's a good article posted in the Scotland thread about Scottish/Polish history but I doubt you'll bother to look for it.

I think they just like to complain and anything/anyone different to them becomes their best source. Maybe a bit of fear of the unknown too. Inexcusable all the same!

Some people just like to moan...

Hehehe skirt-wearers :) I have to say I'm baffled by the kilt myself.

I'm not. There are guys that suit it and guys who don't and when you see a guy that does...it'll baffle you no more... ;)

Did you ever consider it was just the group of people you met that were 'dickheads' and not an entire nation? Haven't you come across a fellow group of Scots you could say that about - I know I have. Plenty of times. I didn't say 'oh the rest of Scotland are cun*s' because of it.

Good point Sofi. I was once told to "go back to munching on haggis and shagging ginger skirt-wearers" by some "very nice" folk in Coventry. Hmm, but I don't believe all in Coventry think that ought to be the case.

People I work with say it all the time unfortunately. Representationally, this forum would make it seem so

Then you need to figure out why they are saying it, as they seem to be employed at the same time...

Life / Legally changing my Polish name to English one? [55]

If you have a child in an Enlish speaking country, would you give him a name of your heritage or where he would live?

If I had a child anywhere his/her name would reflect their heritage rather than where I lived at that moment.

I won't deny a couple of my Polish friends have arrived in Scotland and worked in low paid jobs that didn't warrant their education from Poland. Really though, they were just working to make some money to establish themselves. Now they're in college (or graduated) and the low paid jobs are just seeing them through it.

Can't wait for you to try and land a job after graduation...

NO what job do you do, I bet it is unskilled work. I bet you take all kinds of british benefits.

You'll bet wrong then! No I don't take any benefits thanks. I will take them when I need them though...maternity etc, as required.

The only people in Scotland I've heard moaning about immigrants taking their jobs are the people who have never worked a day in their lives. There arent enough workers here and the birth rate is far below the level required to replace the population

Good points. Most couples in Scotland now stop at 2 kids whereas before it would be 4 or 5 if not more. Careers have become more important. You're right, it does tend to be the unemployed who whinge on about Polish people "stealing" their jobs. Personally, if I was having bother getting a job I'd be out searching for one rather than spending hours on a forum moaning about it.

do you know what its like having to explain to poles how to do their work through the use of diagrams and sign language ?

I know what it's like to have to explain like this to a few Brits also.

what do you work as then polskadoll ?

Moderator...

This is MY country seanus. My ancestors fought and died for this country. My forefathers FOUGHT for workers rights etc.
I will NOT tolerate eastern europeam mass immigration. our cultures are incompatible and why should I just ignore them. it is people like you who just sit and do nothing and destroy this country

Sad. I wonder what you'd think if the situation were reversed and it was us flooding to another country to try and make a bit of money? You'd expect to be welcomed and given a job...

By the way, the title of this thread is about needing more immigrants...Scots are flooding out as it is, without being forced...

no its not vibes I have sent out, I am one amongst many scots who have to put up with poles from first hand experiance.

I work day in and day out with people of many nationalities and the people I have most trouble with are people like you. People from this country who think no one else should be allowed in. Those are the people I have to "put up" with.

Love / meaning of receiving empty text [21]

i remenber reading on this forum that its a polish thing- that when an empty text is sent its a sign that the person is thinking of you.

I think the blank text is an error. I've done it a few times. Or it could be like the wonky phone I once had that every so often sent blank messages to everyone in my phone book.

Why didn't you call back for confirmation ?

Good point. If I get a blank text I always reply saying "why did you send me a blank text" and it usually results in "didn't mean to, how are you anyway?" and a lengthy text conversation about nothing...

I am not going to waste any time and effort trying to understand their low class eastern european culture and social system.

Then why are you on PolishForums.com? A place where people come TO learn about Polish culture, social system, language etc. Every time you're on here you're harping on about Polish culture so you obviously have some interest in it, however negative it might be.

I think the problem lies in that you have no wish to interact with Polish people so you send out that vibe, which is picked up on, therefore no one talks to you.

Life / Legally changing my Polish name to English one? [55]

PolskaDoll not quite sure what you are trying to say. Have you had trouble with people mispronouncing your name.

Not so much the pronunciation but mostly the spelling. If you knew my name you'd wonder how people could possibly spell it wrong, but they do.

You don't have to change you’re name legally, simply start introducing yourself as "Marc" or "Martin", and tell people you know that you would prefer to be called Marc from now on.

As much as I disagree that anyone should have to change their name to suit others, I think if you really want to be known by another name, Dice's suggestion is a good one.

What are you havering about now? I am home. I am living in the city of my birth. Do YOU actually integrate with ANYONE? Or do you sit in a darkened room thinking up the next load of bile you're going to puke up in here?

Life / Legally changing my Polish name to English one? [55]

I remember that show and those sketches. Thinking about my own company there's a mix of nationalities but among the Brit staff there's also a huge mix in names - some coming from other origins. Like mine.
