What period of history would this refer to?

I imagine that with the fluctuating borders of Poland (over a period of hundreds of years), a lot of people moved around in and out of the general region in response to invaders, economics, and numerous other factors.

Does anyone really know?

I see your point.

I suppose it is just "easier" to point fingers at Americans, because America is "larger than life". I still can't get over how much our culture is "everywhere". I don't always understand the fascination that other countries have with the US. Whether other people love us or hate us, just depends on what aspect of the country they are focusing on at the time. There is more good to this place than bad. No, we aren't perfect. No, our government isn't perfect. No, our society isn't perfect. But the US is better than a lot of other places, too.

We are a melting pot. I like that, because I believe that diversity lends strength and character to a country. And like you said, even Poland is a blend of other Slavic peoples.

My family tree is blended from various immigrants, and I am thankful that my ancestors made it to this country and worked hard to bulid it.

Don't worry if other people act like you aren't "authentic" Polish because you were born here. It is not anyone elses place to tell you what you are, because you already know what is truth in your heart, Patrycja. That is what matters most! :)

I think that we all make generalizations sometimes without even being aware of it, until someone points it out to us.
Generalizations are usually wrong, because very little of anything in life is ALL or NOTHING. I think it is a feeble attempt to try to make sense of the world and to sort things out.

You know what is the most frustrating thing about learning Polish for me? It is not being able to find a word in the dictionary. I need a big, fat dictionary that has every little word in it. It is making me crazy trying to "guess" at word stems.

Also, trying to remember the difference (in English) for words infinitive, dative, genitive, accusative (I was asleep in class that day, obviously)! (insert intense pain smiley here)

Those of you lucky enough to grow up knowing two languages....you have no idea how blessed you are! Be thankful!

I see some truth in this statement. The various tribes that inhabit Iraq do not get along, and have always fought with each other. The only thing that kept them from killing each other was fear of Saddam, who was the scariest and most vicious of all. These groups are going to have a really rough time with a democracy, because I think, deep down, they don't want it! They continue to fight for power and control in the government right now. As long as they (all the tribes) care more about control of government for their particular sect, there isn't going to be much impetus for co-operation. Democracy requires some degree of co-operation. Sadly, I don't see there being peace in Iraq, with or without troops, with or without rebuilt infrastructure. They just are not ready for peace or democracy.

Language / Polish letters Alt-codes... Anyone? [60]

I have set my keyboard this way (like FISZ's instuctions) and I keep the language tool bar in the system tray at the bottom of the screen so I can switch back and forth easily. I find that if I don't type words with the correct Polish letters, Poltran can't translate them for me. I have considered putting little pieces of tape over my keys to help me learn where things are. You have to hit SHIFT and press the punctuation keys to get additional letters. :)

I've read that on another website on Polish culture..that they bond to a woman out of isolation, culture shock, and lonelines when often there is a wife and family in Poland. One more thing to add a degree of difficulty to finding a good guy. Keep chanting that mantra, ladies! :)

Love is a surprizing thing, you never know when or where it will strike.

I think that it is the quality of love that is most interesting, not how many times you have felt it, for example:

I'm guessing that I have an extra decade or two over some of the posters, and I thought that at my age, I knew quite a lot about relationships. When I got together with my ex husband, there was a strong sense of "coming home". I had found my soul mate-two people somehow blended into one. But for a number of reasons, we grew apart.

It was a Polish student that I met, that was beyond everything I knew. There was some powerful energy between us that I still can't get my mind around. We were friends only, but this energy persists, long after he left. When he was around, I had this feeling of calmness, safety, and nothing could disturb me...I was bullet proof. We laughed all the time, and there were a lot of smiles. There just aren't any good words to tell about this. Something inside me changed forever because of him. I consider him to be the "great love" of my life at this point.
