Travel / Car rental with GPS in Poland [6]

Here is some information I get from Kim Komando, my favorite tech adviser on line. I just received it in my inbox yesterday. :)

"There are numerous map sites on the Internet. Five big ones are Google Maps, Yahoo! Local Maps, Mapquest, Microsoft's Live Search and Ask City. That sounds like a bunch of mapping. But they all use mapping data from NavTeq.
This company says it spends a lot of time driving the roads. Maybe its explorers haven't spent much time on your street. I suggest you notify them.
On its site, click the Map Reporter button. That will bring up a form to report mapping problems. Enter your address at the top. Under Road and Road Feature, select "road is in the wrong place or has the wrong shape."
The form also includes a box to add your comments. Be nice. Nobody's perfect. You can also include your e-mail address. The company says it uses that to update you on corrections"

I'm quite sure, it covers Wieliczka as well. It would be a pity, if tourists trying to get there - couldn't - because of a bad map. Wieliczka should be interested in corrections to be made as well.

UK, Ireland / Why do Poles come to England? [514]

Poles here just do what most are good at. Picking strawberries and cleaning toilets!

This is a really an old fashioned statement. I'm sure there are plenty of students who try to make an extra pound or two during the summer doing just that, but it's not a profession of people who who may have moved to UK to settle there...You see, I also enjoy strawberries picked in California by Mexican immigrants, that's why i pay $1.79 a pound and not a double of triple of that. So, just enjoy the cheaper strawberries.

Clean toilet make a nicer smelling bathroom too. Wouldn't you say? Or, do you prefer a dried out crust of crap around your toilet? :)

UK, Ireland / Why do Poles come to England? [514]

Poles have ALWAyS went places for search of a better life. We are EVERYWHERE from New Zealand to Alaska, Argentina, Australia, USA...you name it, we're there. So, what's a little trip to UK. Nothing, especially that it was made so easy in the EU.

Love / Don't mess with Polish girls.. [14]

well, I guess it's better she used her strength this way instead of breaking it in half on her husband's head strolling home drunk at 2 in the morning... :)

Michal is Russian, BTW, and it isn't a secret :)

I dare to disagree, glowa. His Polish, his "kmiotish" behavior can be only seen by another Pole.

quoting Michal:

"since 1945 and that my relatives no longer alive spoke a very different Polish language to that spoken today"

Food / Pozdravy - What kind of food is this? [11]

Many countries have their own versions of potato based dumplings. In Poland there are many dumpling variants made of boiled potatoes. We have the ones with savory filling “Pyzy“, the sweet ones “knedle” and “kopytka” which are not filled with anything at all. Some people would probably want to add “pierogi” to the above dumpling list, but their dough normally doesn’t contain any boiled potatoes (apart from the filling) so they don’t really belong here.

Knedle ze Ĺ›liwkami (plums)is typical Polish sweet dish, often eaten as a sweet dinner. The Polish kitchen isn’t always healthy… :-)

The above looks like knedle with strawberries, topped with strawberry sauce. Yammm!
Tis the season to get them at a restaurant or a deli.

Law / I need to get my girlfriend back home from Poland - need legal advice [34]

I heard that too Sledz. It takes about 10 years for the data to be purged, and a person can try again without a record of previous entrance. Mikeracing, I think you need to book a flight to Poland and take your best suit with you. :) You still will come back to USA alone, but you can initiate paperwork for your wife.

I vist to a polish-american lawyer would help too... if you really care.

Real Estate / How much rent do you pay in Poland? [18]

Banks in Poland (or anywhere also) are not so quick to lend you money...unless you have a pile of papers to substantiate your income...somebody is making money there to buy (or built) the huge, concrete mansions. My siblings and some cousins did, but it took them years to do it.

Life / what is the most common and the most beautiful name in Poland? [58]

and at least half give themselves the english equivalent when talking to you or are referred to by their suname or a diminutive of one name or another or a nickname or a diminutive of that or all of the above and then its like whats your name...?

lol. Are you talking about me?

1. My family calls me by my second name (middle name)
2. My polish friends call me by my first name
3. my american friends and co-workers call my by my americanized name, as my first name gets awfully butchered.
4. All others call me "hey you" :) (ok, just kidding)

And, my name made the list.
