Study / anyone with CELTA? [73]

DELTA is really for aspiring trainers. I was a trainer here with a CELTA but it was surplus to requirements. My co-trainer has neither a degree (nor a high school diploma), nor a CELTA, and he got that position based on performance.

News / Polish leader promises compensation for confiscated propery in Poland [17]

Tusk made it sound good but he is really moving into hot water. He is gonna create problems by having to entertain spurious claims to land. Although claimants must go through the proper channels and furnish the relevant papers, it is not sth that needs to be done

Study / anyone with CELTA? [73]

I did my CELTA in Edinburgh, instantly more expensive. Basil Paterson College has a good name so I guess u pay for the name. I was just happy to spend a month in Edinburgh. The CELTA was gruelling as the tutors were quite critical, but often in a constructive way. Berenice Hunter is DELTA qualified and Jill is MSc qualified and have taught in many countries.

U can work for 2 schools if u balance ur commitments, I do this. I also teach CPE privately.

UK, Ireland / Free housing for Poles in the UK? [29]

Poles are getting free housing and, in certain places, free English lessons. It was on TVN Polish news today. Great, I hope this will encourage integration and further cooperation

Study / anyone with CELTA? [73]

CELTA is like an extra guarantee that a teacher is committed to teaching, at least for some time. It cost me 950 pounds for a month, not cheap. It can work in ur favour tho.

Study / anyone with CELTA? [73]

It isn't always a question of continent, it can often be as simple as individual school requirements

CELTA is not necessary for teaching in Poland, I can vouch for that.

News / Thank to Polish people for current relations with Ukraine [89]

Why do u also harp on about history? That is then, and this is now. I didn't even address this aspect. U also took it to the govt level, I was talking about ur everyday person and their perception of Ukrainians, basing my view on what I heard from different sources.

Life / Whippet dogs in Poland? [18]

What a strange thread. There are plenty in the UK and they are fast buggers.

Travel / Will my rented car be stolen or broken into when in Poland? [24]

Poland has clearly not shaken off this bad rep as being a nation of car thieves but things are not as bad as they are portrayed to be. There is always a risk but standard cars are often left alone, like anywhere

News / Thank to Polish people for current relations with Ukraine [89]

David_18 is right, many Poles still have problems with Ukrainians. It can be a generation thing, as ever here, but word spreads unfortunately. Thankfully, things have gotten much better rather than worse but don't imagine that Ukraine would necessarily adopt the Polish position in NATO affairs.

Food / Fine quality cheese shop in Warsaw? [12]

Goat is koza, chevre is French for goat I think.

Related: Cheese Shop in Warsaw

Actually it is Konstancin in Stara Papierna. There is a brand new cheese shop with loads of imported Irish, Dutch and other cheeses. I hope this doesn't bust because it is a great concept and lots of interesting cheeses.

if you're a cheese fan, try also La Fromagerie at ul. Burakowska 5/7 - they have a great selection of cheeses, including proper British cheddar and Stilton.

Food / Fine quality cheese shop in Warsaw? [12]

Dziewczyno owcy is correct but very stiff and weird sounding to some. Goat cheese is oscypek. It's very salty. Not bad fried but not good on the gut

Food / Fine quality cheese shop in Warsaw? [12]

Sorry to intrude Osioł, I can't answer ur question directly but I'm also a cheese lover and can help u out in a general way about cheeses in Poland. The selection is very impressive. Nabiał w polsce jest pyszny (dairy in Poland is tasty).

My girl prefers your new and improved avatar. Wyglądasz szlachetnie i z wielką godnością.

Life / When to greet strangers in Poland or not.. [30]

My landlord, despite months of training, still says 'Good Morning' to me at 9pm.

In the UK, we have a clearer separation between Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening, and Good Night (this one being flexible).

In Japan, there is the same, ohayo gozaimasu (ohayo generally to men), konnichi ha (wa), komban ha (wa) and oyasumi nasai (oyasumi generally to men). In Japan, u can say ohayo in place of konnichi ha (wa) when it is the first meeting of the day.

Just don't make the mistake I made, through tiredness I must confess, I said 'cześć' to an old woman that I didn't know. Hardly a blunder but incorrect according to manners

Life / Stereotyping in the Polish culture: Are Polish blondes really dumb? [130]

That just goes to show how conservative Poland is then. If u got it, flaunt it, within reason. What's the difference between thick and dumb?

My Polish isn't fluent but even I hear mistakes from Poles who speak Polish, tho I never correct them as that would be impertinent.

Listen to that chef, the French-Polish (Pascal?) guy, he does it on purpose. It happens in many languages Justysia

News / East vs. West Poland: dividing voivodeships [7]

Expect some pedantic replies tho. Silesia lies right in the middle but Lower Silesia lies a little to the west which would shift the balance.

Interesting thread

Genealogy / Polish and Mongolian [30]

My friend's girlfriend is a Tatar. I was having a few beers on Fri with my Polish friend and he asked me where my friend's girl was from. I said Poland and he was taken aback. He thought she was Mongolian or of another Asian denomination. I must say, she doesn't have typically Polish features, her mouth is a dead give away.
