News / Polish/German/Russian relations [304]

You don't have to believe ME Maty...read the books....are enough out there...

Read the books about what? Jedwabne? Been there, done that. Alos read a lot about so called "szmalcownicy", so generally people that collaborated with the Nazis, Poles and Jews, and? They were regarded as traitors and there were special units in the underground polish army responisble for eliminating those people... I'm not saying that all poles are saints, but comparing Polish and German attitude towards Jews during the WWII is just pure demagogy.

Fact is after the war Poland was judenrein and deutschrein.
9.000.000 Germans were thrown out of Wroclaw,Sczeczyn,Gdansk,Poznan.Sorry I forgot,it was not the Poles who kicked them out,it was the bloody communists.

Those Germans were running from the Red Army and from the revenge of the Poles. My grandma told me about Germans that were living in my home town before the WWII - they were mostly very intelligent, cultural and polite people, always saying God morning and Goodbye, etc... Well at least before the war, because during the occupation they replaced those words with schnella, polnische schwine, etc... In the end nobody throw them out of their houses. They left because the feared that they might be treated the same way as they treated their neighbors, and the were right probably. The same thing happened with vast majority of those 9 milion Germans.

"...Which brings to mind Clive Ponting's ARMAGEDDON, wherein he states that in the East-european countries German troops frequently rescued jews from beatings and mistreatment by the locals. They did save some at Jedwabne. Maybe they could have saved more...."

Hehehe... yeah and I bet that concerned with their fate they even escorted them to a safe place... Tremblinka, Auschwitz? LOL

Common Bratwurst, what you are trying to do now is to focus the attention of the war atrocities you committed during the war on poles. Nice try to whiten yourself but I think that we all know better. I agree that poles tend to mythologize their attitude during the war but comparing Poles and Germans in the WWII....? I bet even Goebels would have trouble making such a statement. :)

BTW, former polish president, Aleksander Kwasniewski apologized for the Jedwabne few years ago, even though we still don't know who was standing behind this horrible act. That’s regarding us Poles trying to deny our horrible past. :)

A Pole should be silent when people talk about warring!

:)

We took the whole world on...and this world needed 6 years to beat us!
We can still be proud....what does Poland have to show besides being the playground for the grown ups?

You took the world on only because the west helped you to regain strength after the WWI. Actually regaining your strength after WWII also happened because the help from the west. Poland never experienced such a generous aid... Well not until 1 may 2004. :)

As for the second part of your post check the names of:

Stanisław Żółkiewski (1547 - 1620)
he won major military victories against Russia, Sweden, the Ottoman Empire and Tatars. My favorite performance made by him is Battle of Klushino, where 6 000 Poles under his command defeated 40 000 Russian army.

Jan Karol Chodkiewicz (ca.1560- September 24, 1621)

Chodkiewicz

Famous Polish-Lithuanian military commander. My favorite performance made by him will have to be battle of Chocim in 1621 where 40 000 Poles and Cossacks under his command managed to defend the fortress from 100 000 - 150 000 Turks. (some sources say abut 200 000 Turks)

Stanisław Koniecpolski (1590/1594[1] - 11 March 1646)

Koniecpolski

Battle of Martynow, where 25 000 poles won over 60 000 Tatars.

Jan III Sobieski (17 August 1629 - 17 June 1696)

The "Lion of Lehistan." Most famous for the battle of Vienna 1683 - 70 000 Holy League soldiers against almost 140 000 Turks.

ok, it's late and there are still many brilliant polish military strategist like Czarniecki, Zamoyski, Dunin, Boleslaw The Brave, Boleslaw Krzywousty, etc... Check them out and then we can talk, because for the current moment you don't seem to know what you are talking about. :)

Life / First month in Warsaw, trying to combat homesickness! [9]

Thanks...I'm ok really just think that I need to keep uber busy for the next few months! How long did it take you to feel at home, settled and enjoying yourself?

I enjoyed myself straight from the whole beginning, but never actually stopped to feel homesick. :(

Love / Do mix culture marriages work in Poland? [68]

F ex I have no culture in America, but I try to learn everything about my gf's culture because it's interesting for me and it creates many discussion points.

Don't be so harsh Fisz. Pop-culture is also a kind of culture. It has its bright and dark sides. Personally I can't imagine my life without Ramones, Stephen King, Tarantino and Woody Allen. :)

Language / What is the most annoying thing about non-native Polish speakers? [90]

What is the most annoying thing about non-native Polish speakers?

I guess vast majority of Poles feel surprised and honored when a foreigner tries to speak our language rather than annoyed.

Although it really pisses me off when someone tries to impress me with his knowledge of polish language by only saying words like cheepa, hooy, koorva, sooka, etc.. Those are definitely not the most important words in Polish language. :/

Ouch, it's always hard at the beginning. I had a similar experience myself. Unfortunately I don't know any regular posters that are actua;y living in Warsaw. Hope that someone will eventually show up though. All the best to you. :)

UK, Ireland / English people attitude towards Poles? [761]

We had some kitchen work done by Poles, everyone raved on how good they work and are not lazy like the brits. Well They did the work on time, fitment and quality was horrible! I had to get them to re do it at their cost and time.

My guess is that you hired probably a teacher, a baker and a student of sociology, hehehhe... :)

Life / Can you think of any famous Polish personalities? [147]

Matyjasz don't waste your time...

Just one more post before i go back to study Greg... :)

I didn't deny anything....the people you belong to defines your heritage.
And it is nothing you have influence over...you are born into it, you can't change it.

If a Pole decides to be German he must have grown up with german culture, german language, german customs...he must feel belonging to the german people even if he till now lived in Poland under polish rule.

So according to you the territory of polish Kingdom didn't give Copernicus enough opportunities to get in touch with polish culture, language, and customs... Interesting. :)

Bare in mind that Copernicus grandfather as well as his father was born in Kraków. Hardly a German city, wouldn't you agree? :) Copernicus had experienced both cultures, and made his decision. Can we consider it just only a political stance? If we would than it wouldn't reflect well on his attitude to his alleged German heritage, wouldn't it?

Life / Can you think of any famous Polish personalities? [147]

Exactly...the goverment who rules you doesn't decide about your heritage.
Just because someone lives/lived in a territory which changed hands often over the time doesn't make him change his heritage too....that is stupid!

And you still fail to understand the main point. Ok, lets try it in a different way. In this thread as a very interesting fact I mentioned that Erich von Manstein roots were definitely Polish. His real name was von Lewinski. Still he didn’t had problems with creating the plan of invasion on Poland. Let’s take another very interesting fact. General Anders is considered to be a polish WWII hero. Although his family were polonized Germans he was fighting on the polish side in this conflict. He freely decided that his heritage, so as you written above “the people he felt he was belonging to”, was Polish. Just like Manstein decided that although his polish blood running through his veins he was definitely German. So did Copernicus. Nobody forced him to make an oath to polish king, nor to fight Germans on Polish side. He did it freely. Can there be a more significant way to show where you belong to than this?

Life / Can you think of any famous Polish personalities? [147]

He was born in Thorn and died in Frauenburg...he was born into a german family and spoke and wrote german...facts!

His mother was German, but his father wasn't. And as far as his works being written in German and Latin... At that time German language had the same position in science as english has now. Although a lot of Polish scientist publish their works in English I doubt they consider themselves English. :)

That you Poles now want to claim him is not so surprising...why not Schopenhauer too?

You Germans would never do such a despicable thing now wouldn’t you? Oh wait a minute, what was that about naming Mozart, who definitely was Austrian, in "top 10 most famous Germans" list? LOL

Honey you are brillian in fact a genius...:)

Hehe.. Thank you. And although the place where I live 100 years ago was German I'm definitely Polish. :)

Torun even was called once Thorn...it was German too!

And Berlin was set up by Slavs, and? At that time Toruń was Polish city. Besides Copernicus father as well as his grandfather came from Kraków. :)

The people you belong to...?

So do you think that by fighting Germans on polish side he was in some strange and awkward way trying to highlight his affiliation to German nation? :))

And I thought that women are hard to understand. :)

I dunno...just how long scurried the Polacks as the mighty Wehrmacht came visiting? 3 Weeks?
And you needed the whole world to say good bye again...and the help of your good friends , the Russians...who didn't want to leave for decades either...LOL

And they left even quicker. :)

PS: Arthur Schopenhauer from Danzig and Immanuel Kant from Königsberg lived in what is now polish or russian...they were still Germans!

Copernicus not only lived in what is now Poland, but he actually lived in Kingdom of Poland. If he was so germanic, than why he was standing on the side of Kingdom of Poland fighting against Germans and why did he oath allegiance to polish King? And also I bet you know better that people that actually knew him? LOL

UK, Ireland / Nice British people. (see. the article ) [41]

Thugs are cowardly by nature so never expect them to be able to do anything without some form of backup nearby. I seriously doubt thugs in any country would fight fair.

Yep, the same is here in Poland, only we don't call those thugs chavs.... Here we call them dresiarze. Aside of the name and maybe clothes the rest is basically the same.

My grandma told me how all those germans in Silesia always knew who was german and who was polish! No mingling, no guessing!
Silesia was once german in case you should have forgotten that...

For a short time only, in case you should have forgotten. You got one thing right; your family were Germans from Silesia. Not Silesians.

Wasn't Liberace a Pole ...?, and someone once told me that Charles Bronson had Polish roots.

Yes he was. As for Charles Bronson, I think he had Lithuanian roots, although I also heard that his parents were polish immigrants.

As for what nationality was Copernicus... Copernicus was living in the territory of Polish Kingdom, he was a subject of a Polish King, many times very vividly expressed his standpoint when it came to polish German conflicts (he as well as his family actively participated in defense of Polish cities against German Teutonic Knights - for example he was in command during the defense of Polish castle in Olsztyn in 1521), almost all scientist and astronomers of his time considered him to be a polish astronomer..... etc... Is this enough Bratwurst?

(And yes Grandpa and Granduncles marched through Poland...two times! LOL)

My Greatgrandfather and grandpa kicked back germans twice out of Poland... that's a tie I guess. LOL

Language / Five Commandments for Polish Language Learners [36]

Funnily it's just the exact impression you give here on this form... And as for your Polish, its definitely communicative, but sounds like a robot talk, it’s very artificial. There’s one thing to learn a language on a communicative level, and another thing to be fluent in it.

His roots were definitely Polish. He came from a Germanized polish family, Lewinski... but just like Unabomber was American, he was German. Don't take my posts so seriously. :)

UK, Ireland / Brit Youths Protest Anti-Gay Poland [114]

Anyway back to the topic...be gay just don't act like it in public :)

I don't mind them acting gay in public. Still it's really amusing to watch screens from a gay manifestation, with all those drag queans dancing like there were in a go go club just to see their "leaders" talking about gay-couples rights to adopt children. If I hear about a gay couple that adopted a child I swear I’m going to strip naked and dance my promiscuous dance in front of their house to the music of “Small town boy” and then we will see how tolerant the really are!!!

Ohh come on, that's too obvious. Erich von Manstein (von Lewinski) - the co-author of the plan on invading Poland, France, etc... one of the most prominent commanders of Nazi Germany's armed forces. :)

lol I thought only one of the priest was Polish so that makes 3/4 famous Polish people then :)

Nice to see you too Mr M, how's the studying going?

Hehe... It's OK. Actually I should be studying right now, but I'm such a lazy sod. :))

And how are you? ß I’m really being interested. None of that British small talk nonsense. :P

Yep, but I'm not sure if we should promote our country through such controversial characters.... What the hell: Theodore Kaczynski alias the Unabomber, Leon Czolgosz - killer of president William McKinley, George Adamski - the first man who managed to take a photo of a UFO... and last but not least the horrible Wachowski brothers, or should I say a sister and a brother? :)) Of course those all are Americans, but still... :)
