Travel / Beskidy Mountains in Poland [2]

I was there once and the mountains plus the surroundings are beautiful. If you try to recover from alcoholism or any other psychic addiction you can find peace of mind there. I believe most Polish "hermits" spend time there.

Work / Poles Go to Work Abroad [30]

I know a young couple (around 30) both Masters Degree from Poland and they've been working in Chicago area as cleaning service team. But they don't know English and have no driving license/SS. On the other hand, they prefer to listen to the Polish radio and watch/read Polish TV/newspapers so it seems they are happy after all.

Work / Poles Go to Work Abroad [30]

The lack of the language, illegal immigration status could be the cause too.

Study / Comparing Educational Standards in Poland vs other countries [88]

You could compare how many Polish students know foreign languages versus how many American (or students from other countries) know foreign languages. Young Poles after high-school know at least one foreign language well.

UK, Ireland / English, Irish, Scots: They're All One, Genes Suggest [69]

very little i imagine... which would explian why it was posted in the off-topic lounge... perhaps...

Whenever I see "English" or "British" in the topic I feel it's going to be deleted or closed soon - these two words are like catalysts to forum fights.

Travel / Anyone been to Zakopane? [36]

What is Zakopane like?

You can see a lot of "owczarek podhalanski" (Podhalan Shepherd) dogs that protects sheeps from wild animals in the Zakopane/Tatry region.

Life / Consumer Shortages and Gifts To Send to Poland - She is a school teacher and getting married soon [9]

Whatever you send, it should be appreciated by most Polish families (unless they are choosy). When I was last time in Poland I was asked by my "5-th cousin" if I could bring/buy him a laptop. Shheez. I didn't know what to say - I don't have laptop myself and I think it's a pretty expensive gift for someone you see the second time in your life.

I guess some electronic, modern gadget will do just fine - maybe ipod or xbox if you have enough money.

I never heard of this (maybe it's something new for Polish society though).

Work / Salary indication job in Poland [44]

As far as the "standard living" is concerned, I think both Warsaw and Wroclaw can offer about the same (I find Wroclaw to be a nicer city to live overall). Your potential salary depends on the kind of profession you have. It could be from 2000 zl to 10000 zl a month.

Work / Salary indication job in Poland [44]

Hi, I would like to find out what should i expect in term of salary if working in Wroclaw as a professional.

Would you be working for a domestic or international company? How big the company is?

Law / Advice on investment of $40,000 in the Warsaw area [30]

North Carolina???

Sledz, read my post again. I wrote:

"In the US you can buy a house for $50K."

Isn't North Carolina in the US? Your claims about finding a job etc. are true, but I only was referring to "a house in the US".

want to sell with profit in coupple of years when prices stabilize

True, but when everybody wants to sell at the same time (for real estate market "the same time" maybe a range of 2-5 years), the prices are going to drop, and fast...

Law / Is there money in English Proof Reading in Poland? [7]

If there is (mostly government documents or patents maybe), the pay isn't very good. There is more demand for translation (even though there's a lot of cheap competition on the market) than proofreading.

Law / Advice on investment of $40,000 in the Warsaw area [30]

Are you saying that you could buy something in Poland for £20,000???!?!!

In the US you can buy a house for $50K. But it's in the country (Oklahoma, Nebraska, etc.). Same with Poland - you can buy a 50-year-old studio to renovate in a town of 5-20 thousands people (not in the city, nor in the Warsaw area for sure) for $40K. Note I wrote: "50 MILES from Warsaw".

I knew property was cheap

It's quite the contrary - property in good location in Poland is pretty much overpriced.

Life / 5000 zloty in Poland - how long would this last me? [22]

When I go to Poland alone and don't have to pay rent (living with the family) - just food, everyday activities, once or twice a week restaurant meal - 5000 ZL would probably be enough for about 2 months.

Law / Advice on investment of $40,000 in the Warsaw area [30]

Don't want to depress you, but for $40K you can buy a new car in Poland (Nissan Maxima or similar). Prices in the Warsaw area are about the same as in the NYC area so you won't buy even a studio for this amount there. You could try within 50 miles from Warsaw to buy a studio to renovate for that.
