Love / Polish Engagement and Wedding Traditions [42]

i think its best to assume that all Polish guys over a certain age (not sure what that age is.. maybe 28?) are married. In my experience he didnt try to hide it as he was wearing a ring, when I did eventually notice and question it he tried to tell me the truth, but his English was terrible so I didnt fully understand for a while.

well its good we all know now. theres a lot of married British men who dont wear rings at all.. especially those long time married. It doesnt seem to be considered as important for a man to wear a ring as a woman.

News / Climate change - what is Poland doing to reduce its carbon emissions? [14]

thanks for your response UKPolska.. I sympathise with the funding plight...often governments dont get their priorities right when it comes to spending money. Good luck to your wife, sounds like a commendable job. To the previous poster, I am aware that Poland is in the EU, but I wanted to know about things that are specific to Poland...even what actions individuals are taking or about any local campaigns to raise awareness.

No wonder i'm not having any luck getting close to the Polish guys. I wear my nan's wedding ring on my right hand. They most probably think i'm married.

this made me laugh.. lisa they will most definitely think you are married.. suggest you take it off pronto. Remember to check his right hand too..this one caught me out.

you mountain dogs are always on the whisky/brandy or whatever it is you carry in those barrels. Leave the girl alone.. she is trying to help her friends, not join Live Aid.

i am from the area and although I live in London now I often return. Every time I hear and see that there are more and more Polish people there, especially driving buses in Brum. I know there is some kind of Polish Cultural Institute in Birmingham which might be a good place to start and apparantly some Polish clubs springing up, but sorry I dont know the details or personally know any Poles living there right now, but they shouldnt be too hard to find as there are tons. Good luck.

Life / What makes you proud to be Polish? [150]

sorry I should have said 'some' people, clearly not all. I also travel a lot and luckily dont generally go to the kind of places where my fellow countrymen make me ashamed to be British.. but you only have to switch on the TV to see plenty of examples.. footie matches, package holidays etc..

News / Tinky Winky from tellytubbies outed in Poland [145]

Remember guys.. if you axe Tinky Winky from the TV, he will be forced to move to the suburbs and look for manual labour.. so if you see a large purple thing in your local bar.. do buy him a vodka

I think Rodak has a valid point if that are his/her own observations of Poles overseas. People often behave differently when they are not in their home country and away from the constraints of family. Some people are quick to retort that its not true.. this is because Polish people do geverally have a very strong sense of national pride.. which is great, but you cant also be blind to the reality that there are plenty of Poles living overseas who do give others a bad impression of them, whether it by through theft or whatever.. of course this applies to all nationalities.. Britain is one of the worst examples of people behaving overseas in a way they wouldnt dare to at home..

UK, Ireland / The Problem i have with Culture Differences (UK + Polish) [32]

being cultural as knowing the rules of savoir vivre, attending theatre or ballet every once in a while, reading Dostoyevski and listening to classical music, with being traditional: which includes customs, cuisine, etc....

you are right. its probably a problem with the english.. .coolutura = culture? more about traditional customs rather than culture.

Love / Polish attitude towards sex [194]

Every time I go to Poland I roll my eyes. Boobies are flashing on the screen quite freely

if polish tv is so liberal why are they banning tinkywinky? he's got no tits and has committed no crime other than carry a handbag.

Dec..I think its also a typically British trait to run our country down to others, but when a foreigner tries to do it, we defend it to the hilt... strange, but true.

Miranda..I think you are right about that, it all depends on your upbringing..... I have always considered myself to be working class, but in reality my dad was working class and my mom was a posh public schoolgirl.. anyway I dont give a *** about class. Now Im a Director and my partner is a Decorator.. he often asks me why I want to be with someone with a lower class job (his words not mine and sorry Dec).. but to me those things are totally unimportant...and clearly he is much more cultured than me :)

I like that philosophy of accepting different cultures... and what about our lovely drinking culture for gawds sake, high tea, fish and chips... the list goes on.... and actually he likes BB more than me!
