News / Poles bring new life to eastern Germany [14]

When Daniel Sosin was looking to buy a house for his family in the north-western Polish city of Szczecin he was aghast at how little he would get for his money.

So he went looking across the nearby border with Germany, buying a 150-year-old house in the village of Penkun for about the same price as a bachelor flat in Szczecin.

Mr Sosin is part of a wider trend as people from the new EU member states, often flush with cash from real estate booms in their home countries, are beginning to buy properties in nearby "old" EU states to the west. Penkun is in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, one of Germany's most economically depressed areas. Thousands of young people have left for better prospects in the west, leaving behind empty houses and apartments that are being snapped up by Poles.

"A few people are sceptical, but the people who are moving here are the same as us - they are Catholics, they come from the same kind of culture, so we don't see any difference," says Mr Schödinger. "They are educated people, and they don't just come here to sleep for the night - they come to live, to join our soccer teams, to play music in our bands, and to put their children in our schools."

The Poles have injected new life by opening small businesses

I don't agree with whole article (part about cleaning :P ;) ) All in all it is interesting article

History / Poland-Russia: never-ending story? [1341]

True, between 1999, the year before Mr Putin became president, and 2007, the Russian economy expanded by 69 per cent. But the economies of 11 of the 15 former republics of the Soviet Union expanded by more than Russia's. Indeed, only Kyrgyzstan did markedly worse. A number of the former Soviet republics did, it is true, benefit from an oil and gas bonanza. But so, too, did Russia: its oil and gas exports jumped from $76bn in 1999 to $350bn last year.Even so, the Russian economy expanded by less than Ukraine's.

Like all post-communist countries, Russia's economy suffered a steep initial decline, which reached its trough in 1998. Countries that reformed more decisively, such as Poland, bottomed out more quickly and are now far ahead. Again, Russia's recovery is in no way exceptional: tiny Estonia has done far better. Maybe this is why the Kremlin hates the Baltic state so much.

The west must again form a concerted policy: it must resist efforts to divide westerners against themselves; it must insure itself against over-dependence on Russian energy; and it must make the price of revanchism high for Russia itself. But it must also repeat a powerful truth: the west is no enemy of the Russian people. On the contrary, nothing would be more desirable than for a vibrant and self-confident Russian democracy to take its place in the world of western values. And, yes, that must include membership of Nato.

History / Poland-Russia: never-ending story? [1341]

there are some, as I said we are not Japan.

Russia is not Japan or USA.

Poland doesn't have ambitions to be independent block like USA or China. It is enought to be part of EU.

I think Russia should be more down to earth, you are important country, you are not super power. Russia is our neighbour and we should have contacts with your country.

That is all.

I am after lecture of aricle in Newsweek (polish edition) Denis Macshane writes that some europeans and americans wants to create free trade union between USA and EU, what is more with Ukraine ...

web3.aftenbladet.no/english/englishcomment/article586818.ece?service=print

read about it, it is Russian nightmare ;)

History / Poland-Russia: never-ending story? [1341]

You havent catch irony ? Have you ?

I will tell you , Russia is to weak to be member of club "2 countries run the world one of them is Russia" I will tell you, yes USA is not going to be hegemon in nearest future as it is now. China will be second player, and EU third.

Russia son't have potential, 140 mln people, uneducated, backward, poor, without technologies.

(to be clear Poland isn't Japan as well)

We can argue, if you want you can show me some Russian inventions in last few years.

You have lost most of your Soviet potnetial, now you have gas. It is very important you have it and it is only one thing which make you serious country. Now you don't have technologies, siencists, and every year Russia lose one milion of its citizens .

After you have choosen your own Political system, any serious company will not open research center in your country, only factories for lauborers.

I think China will be our potential partner in future. Next strong country, far away form Poland.

Finaly, I like Russians as people, I don't like Russian state. Last sentence is very common for Poles.

History / Poland-Russia: never-ending story? [1341]

normalistion ? for 1 week or half year. Everything will end on Ukraine. Conflict we had was very uncomfortable for Russians and Poles. Now we have "case of diplomatic fire". Personaly I like situation we today have .

Hoping to improve Polish-Russian relations

"Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk is holding talks with President Vladimir Putin and others in Moscow today. Tomasz Bielecki considers the first visit to Russia by a Polish head of government since 2001 as an indication of détente. "The Kremlin is striving to improve relations to the west and needs a normalisation of relations to Warsaw to achieve this goal. Russian diplomats admit that Moscow learned to appreciate Poland's strong position in the EU only recently. ... The only tangible effect of a moderate thaw between Poland and Russia can be the development of economic relations. Even though Moscow often exploits trade in energy commodities to play international games, it can be very pragmatic in other realms. The prime example is Russia's relations with Latvia. Despite acrimonious political disputes with the Kremlin, this country has been conducting trade with Russia intensely over the past two years." (08/02/2008)"

History / Poland Betrayed in WW2 [243]

When I read interantional press half of world dreams about ending Engish - American hegemony. Arabs, Russians, Germans, French, Chinese, whole Latin America. I think that we should consider if we really want to be first line of front (as it was in WWII). Go and read German French Russian forums ... everybody just waits to kick them. I started to change my mind in some issues. I think it would be better for Poland to be more responisble for our achievements after '89

History / Polish Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War [140]

I think that history has shown Poland to be a socialist country.

I don't know what do you mean. I thought that history has shown Poland to be democratic country even more than UK or France defiantely more than Germany and Russia. Maybe USA has more democratic histry because just from the begining it was democratic country.

What I want to add

I think this topic apeared because we have several discussions about commies/Russia/Stalin

In my opinion Poles are not Fasists.

Socialist ideas were very popular before WWII, J Pilsudski was socialist.

The whole problem with commies in Poland was that we had borded with commie state on east. Poles knew what does it mean true commie world.

Milons of Ukrianians dead form hunger, refugies ...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor

The Ukrainian famine (1932-1933), or Holodomor (Ukrainian: Голодомор) (literally in Ukrainian, "death by hunger"), was one of the largest national catastrophes of Ukrainian nation modern history. Modern scholarly estimates of the direct loss of human life due to the famine range between 2.6 million and 3.5 million, while the numbers as high as up to 10 million are sometimes cited in the media

I think now some people don't understand why we didn't negotiated with soviets before WWII.

Polish people didn't want to have situation like in Russia but they hated Fasists as well.

Maybe in some parts of our country there were nationalists (Poznan where I live) but it was reaction on German nacionalists. they are nationalits and hate us so we will be nationalists and we will hate them.

Communism after WWII wasn't our sytem and we were forced to have this system but some people in our country have sentiment to this period of time. That is why in Poznan you will find pub with commie posters and music "Proletariat".

In Poland communism was much different than in other soviet countries.

Stalin said that imposing Communism on Roman Catholic Poland was as absurd as putting a saddle on a cow.

and every person form former Soviet block will agree that situation in Poland was much different. We had information form all over the world. Some of our citizens could go to work in USA.

maybe it becomed a little bit off topic but Polish hate for communism have much different origin than ideological. that is why all Poles when we talk about Yalta feel that they were sold for Stalin even some of them were socialists. Margin of Polish socialists wanted to have something to do with Soviet commies. Main ideology on left side of Polish political scene was solcial democracy.

I think it is good that Polish Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War were on republican side because they won in free elections. Because we are true democrats.

How were they treated on return to Poland?Did any survive the war?If so ,did they then sway towards the Communist/socialist idea of Poland or something else?

some still live and have special combatant pensions.

According to socialistic version of history.

I think that some people with idealistic point of view joined Republicans and that we weren't on Fasist side form mine point of view is positive.

the other fact is that we got rid of true commies form Poland ;)

A lot of the Polish were from the communist party and were former Red Army, so I thought there might be mixed feelings.

we were on opposite side than Germans = bright side ;-)

so I thought there might be mixed feelings.

but I agree feelings can be mixed

-On the contrary, I am in close touch with the subject in queston and I know what many Poles - the majority, not brainwashed by Mr Mchnik and his lot - think about 'Polish- Ukrainian relations.' I actually live in Poland a large chunk of the year. Do you suggest that if somebody doesn't live in Poland he isn't qualified to speak on Polish topics? If so, you're such a person - you live in Canada.

you are not ... read Polish forums related to articles about Ukraine and work for them ... speak to Poles and ask what kind of imigrants they prefere.

- Another one who prefers not to acknowledge history in the false hope all the problems will just go away of their own accord?

I know that some people would like to see Poland as alone "super power" fighting against all hostile neighbours ... It is better to argue when it is needed and do business when it is possible.
