Life / Researching Polish Culture for a speech... need help! [24]

As for weddings...maybe you could talk about the weddings in Zakopane where the bride and groom ride away in a horse drawn carriege , and they have their path blocked by a car , and have to pay a small fee to pass through....or maybe the dozynki , the harvest festival party where all the foods harvested are put on show , and eaten , of course a little alchohol gets consumed also....

I helped shift a load of stuff to a cenetary in Lobez for a teacher friend who was staging a play with some children from her class , i had never seen so many candles , and it was so different from what i knew in the UK...It is one of many things that make Poland special for me , and i hope it does not change too much...Check out smyngus dingus day too....we have just had this in Poland...

Does babcia refer to grandma?!

Indeed it does...they are scarey old women in post office ques that can attack without warning if you say anything when they barge you out of the way to jump the que....

The day of the dead is in november , and i believe its a celebration of the life of the dead person rather than a mourning , the whole churchyard is lit with thousands of candles , very spectacular....HA , here is me sounding like i know all about Polska , i am just a Brit who has lived here five years , and knows not so much....

How about the day of the dead , and the respect Poles show to their deceased...i found that a big difference to the ways back in the UK...also Polish family life , much closer than in the west , with more respect shown for older people , especially the scary Babcia,s...

If you have Polish blood in you then you will do ok i reckon , i think its best you talk to an older person who has lived all their life in Polska , as those who have left for life in another country are influenced by the culture of the country they have moved to , and often have distorted memories of the real culture of Poland...I wish you luck with your talk , let us all know how it goes....

I see, a field trip to Poland is in order

Yep , you can,t beat seeing the situation for yourself....I heard all kinds of stuff about Poland before i came here , most of which was utter rubbish....Untill you have sat around a camp fire with good Polish friends and talked complete rubbish you can never truly know Poland...

I choose to speak about Polish culture

Is that a good idea , seeing as you don,t know anything about it...you might get some smart ass in the audience who knows lots about it...get yourself over to Polska to do some study , you will love it....

Life / Life in Bydgoszcz [39]

Yes, it is in the town hall's basement:

I thought so , but its not easy to figure out when you have had more than a few piwo....I do remember leaving the place around 4 am and wondering where the hotel was...? No problem i thinks , just ask some body , but what was the name of the hotel...???

After checking the hotel door keys , which sadly didn,t have any name on we just wandered around till by good luck we found the place...That was a night to remember... if only i could remember...??????

UK, Ireland / 13,000 Polish births this year, in the UK [180]

I can still see much of the rubbish left here in Poland

Thankfully my friends are not such people , i guess they mean that those who have what it takes to make a good life in Poland see no need to go elsewhere...

Life / So I had a get-together in Poland... [13]

Sounds to me like you have got some tight friends...make some good buddies , people you can really talk to , and get it sorted as to what people need to bring to the party...My Polish friends always come loaded down with stuff , as they know i am a poor farmer , and we have a great time...There are some very generous Polish people , get out and meet some nicer friends....

News / PRACTICAL HELP FOR POLISH FIRE VICTIMS...advice needed.. [6]

As many of you know my presence in Polska is due to falling in love with the place during long hard trips to Belarus to deliver aid to children suffering from the Chernobyl disaster...Later i was asked to help a childrens home in Lobez as well as the Markot organisation for the homeless , and this became a twice yearly project to bring truckloads of stuff for them....

Since moving to Poland i have pretty much had my hands full trying to survive , but i do still try to help other UK groups coming to Poland with aid , giving them free camping , making contacts , and making sure they don,t have any problems.....

However , the recent fire disaster in Poland is quite near to me in kms , as well as being something that has happened to a group of people that i have helped in the past , the homeless...

These people were already homeless and poor , and now the survivors have lost all of what little that had in a fire... There is not a lot i can do for the dead , but i feel i want to help those that have survived , despite my own limited means....

When i was in the UK i had no problems at all to fill a convoy of Landrovers with aid , and even several full sized Polish trucks , i had all the contacts , the money , and the means to collect all the aid , store it , and deliver it to Polska , but i am kinda a bit lost to get the same thing going in Poland...

I have spoken to the mayoress of my local town , and i have permission to hold a rock concert to raise some dosh for another cause , but this one is a bit more urgent , i ain,t asked my buddies who are in rock bands if they will play for free yet , but i reckon they will , and of course i need to find a place to store any aid till i can deliver it , and i need to get to the UK to get something started there , and collect my new Jeep cherokee to deliver the aid when and if i get any....

These poor people will have lost all that they have , probably jumped out of the window in their pyjamas and don,t even have a change of undies , so they will need everything i guess....

As i have no experiance of collecting aid in Poland i would be gratefull for any advice on how to go about it , i do have the help of Polish friends , but they have no experiance of this kind of thing....Finally , any ideas where i can get a big trailor for free to hook on the back of my Jreep......? thanks....

Must remember not to post after a few cans of Polish piwo..spotted a few typos in there , but i hope you will get the gist....

I read that report too , its not so much that they desire to be prostitutes , but they see this as the only way out of poverty , and out of Russia....

News / Fire in hostel in north west Poland kills 21. [18]

Anybody got any practical suggestions how to help the survivors of this tragedy....I don,t have any money to give them , but i am willing to get some aid together and drive it up there as soon as i get my replacement Jeep over to Poland...Its in my corner of Poland , so would not be too difficult to get to them...I have previous experiance of taking aid to Belarus , and Poland , but has anyone any suggestions as to what we can do.....?

Life / What should Poland and Poles do, after first day of nuclear war? [133]

Ha , probably won,t need anything....I think those who survive a nuclear war would be the unlucky ones....I was in the military , so i have a better idea than most people what a nuclear bomb can do to people , also i have been to Belarus , and seen the effect that radiation has on people.... I think i would prefer to be dead...
