Genealogy / I Gotta Ask: Who Else Is a Jewish-Polish Person With an Interesting Testimony? [48]

If you can call the Jews a nation, i.e Jewish nation, then why can't you say the Ashkenazi nation as they fulfil the same criteria as other Jews, maybe bar Israeli Jews as they have their own country with defined (semi) national borders?

Jew is only derogatory if thrown that way.

Life / Why do so many people in Poland have issues with Judaism? [69]

Ach, you are Irish so you don't count, my friend ;) ;)

A fertile breeding ground for development. Since when has that been sinister?

Casting the net wide. Since when has that meant anything other than neutral spreading?

I sincerely apologise if it came across as negative, yehudi. That's a common expression, 'a fertile breeding ground', and doesn't mean a lowly status necessarily. It just means an area where sth can grow after the seeds having been sown.

'Cast their net' is again metaphorical/figurative for spreading. There was no sinister overture attempt here. Go and ask other PF members with fluent English and they will tell you the same. The first is with fruition and the second with reach.

As for Scotland and Poland, see the thread where Scots have had Polish connections since 1566. See also the literature on the strong bond between our peoples in WWII and, indeed, since then.

I'll leave the infiltration to the Mossad, they seem to be so good at it ;0 ;O (well, maybe not in relation to Iran).

UK, Ireland / Its strange that there arent many Poles who live in the UK on this Forum [102]

You are a gem, Justy. A rare breed that doesn't constantly harp on about the need to have Polish language as the main one. People like enkidu only want to hear inane drivel about work, money and the self-piteous woes of the day. It would appear that he doesn't care too much about a more international perspective on 'things Polish'.

Quite a few native speakers here have Polish connections, enkidu, and it was stupid of you to just assume otherwise. Have you looked at a map, lately? I think you'll find that Poland is at least twice as big as GB. 'A matters'? What's it to be, one or many? As much as you'd like to think it isn't, Poland is very much a country of discusssion in some circles. Many have Polish roots.

Justy, as ever, is right. In my experience here in Poland, given a chance for open and non-directed conversation, it isn't long before the gripes and groans about money set in. Is that what you want, enkidu? Look around the forum and see the variety, a variety that Poland and Poles are very slowly realising. I can't have many serious discussions with quite a few in Poland as they don't know things which are common knowledge to most other countries in the world. The number of blank faces I have received which almost made me fall over is incredible! This is not the fault of many Poles due to limited travel and exposure opportunities under communism but too many have been slow off the mark.

The Romans failed in what regard, southern? They controlled so much for so long and every people have their time.

Anybody care to outline the central tenets of Judaism? Let's see who's brave enough.

Poland and Russia were fertile breeding grounds for them, PP. They cast their net wide across Europe. Any costs that they incurred in getting there were offset rather quickly when they started plying their trades.

When's your presentation on Judaism, PP?

Can somehow communicate? Do you know how that sounds? Give me some time with Russian and I'd get to grips with it too. No offence but your language isn't quite Japanese.

Trotter, I'd be glad too but this forum is in English so you know what to do....

News / HUMANE TREATMENT FOR CHRISTMAS CARP in POLAND [55]

It is not for whities to go on the rampage and convert everyone to our way of being, is it? God made man, for better or for worse, and imperfections were inherent. Many made a mess of Africa and you know it. Yes, we helped but they didn't ask for it. Did Poland reach out with a needy hand to the EU, Sok?

Well, there are some oddballs around for sure.

Says the man who seems to think Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Slovakia and every other country around Poland is Poland's business. Let me guess, Kalingrad should be Polish too, right?

Maybe we should put you in that fishtank, Sok, what do you think? ;) ;) You might find your rightful home at last :) ;)

Language / I know Russian language - will it help me learn Polish? [105]

When it comes to language they are. When it comes to some other things, most certainly not.

A knowledge of Russian will help but only to get a feel for some common Slavic pronunciation.

News / HUMANE TREATMENT FOR CHRISTMAS CARP in POLAND [55]

FNM were an awesome group in their time and I can't believe people focussed on what fishermen see every day.

None taken as I'm Scottish. They got round part of the problem in Scotland by saying that fishing was an art and that you had to throw many fish caught back into the water.

The thing with the EU is delicate balance. Telling Spain what's what is a bold step and some things in life we just have to grin and bear. With enough pressure, they might bend but I doubt it.

News / HUMANE TREATMENT FOR CHRISTMAS CARP in POLAND [55]

Well, that's a tough one, Scrappy. Should we leave all countries to regulate their own affairs when it comes to tradition or should we intervene on cruelty grounds?

Carp being lazy is a good point. They are big and docile so that makes it more acceptable.

The ultimate wisdom rests with God and you are not him, are you Greg? ;) ;)

Say that you are and all the Jews here will have your head in the guillotine.

Sokrates, I don't need to mention how brutal white men have been in the past. Serving hamsters is just wrong. Are you sure it was hamster? That's rotten!

Greg, I'll let you do that instead. I see you haven't read the thread above.

Ach, laddie, that's not the point! ;)

Asians just have a different approach but there are many sensitive souls among them that wouldn't condone such inhumane killings. Trust me, I have met them.

Language / I know Russian language - will it help me learn Polish? [105]

Lyzko, are you Polish or Russian or a mix? A little stress is needed for sure. Russian suits me better in some ways as it's softer. Scottish people tend not to have an easy time of making hard sounds. My wife tried to teach my parents to say CZ in the proper way but it always came out weaker than it was supposed to be, more like CI. My mum knows a little Russian as she studied it some years ago.

You can imagine the lesson where my wife tried to teach my parents to say CZIPA, LOL. The soft version is, um, different ;) ;)
