Law / What name would sound appropriate for a company in Poland ? [13]

I was a bit over ambitious with my company name, although I am working as a freelancer out of Poland, I do live here, so I ended up with a couple of long words the Polish seem to struggle with, no bother I thought as I do not actually work in Poland. After my first visit to a gas station to buy some diesel I did wish I had made it shorter as I tried to do the VAT receipt, boy is that long winded and slightly mad.

Think of a name and ask a Pole to comment, I wish I had listened to my wife now......

Law / WHY SO DIFFICULT TO REGISTER BUSINESS IN POLAND? [16]

About a month for me, we found an accountant first, through a friend who works at the tax office in Częstochowa. We had a meeting with her, told her what we wanted to do. Came back a couple of days later and she gave us a list of places to visit to make this all happen, its not the easiest thing to do, but most procedures like this in Poland are a little long winded, but I go with it, this is how they do things, its all fine.

Law / iTunes in Poland [11]

Also a Mac user who has moved to Poland, I have a .mac account currently used with a UK credit card. My attempt to change my address has met with some success although it refuses to accept a Polish mobile or lane line number. Having a look to change my credit card details to a Polish one, looks like a no no.

Life / Best Sat Nav devices for use in Poland [41]

I have a Tom Tom 720 and a couple of weeks ago upgraded the Eastern Europe map. We live in a small village which was on the map, but now we seem to have a lot of detail, street names etc and so far on our travels it seems nice and detailed

Life / Best Sat Nav devices for use in Poland [41]

I just upgraded the old PL, CZ, etc TomTom map to Eastern Europe on my TT720 and to be at last there appears to be much better coverage of Poland. Our village has no arrived on the map, although with many on the smaller roads in or area.

Life / Bringing new car (tax free) to Poland [6]

I lived in Denmark for a few years and bought my car back to the UK on Danish plates and was told that in the EU the car would be able to run on DK plates for 6 months, then it would need to be imported. The Police have made it clear to some of my Polish friends who have had there PL cars here, that if they intend to stay in the UK, they need to sell the cars and buy UK ones, a good point as its RHD here or import the PL car. I resold mine in DK and bought a RHD car here. As this appears to be a EU ruling I guess Poland is subject to it. Interesting thread though, looking forward to other replies.

Food / Where do you go shopping for food in Poland? [26]

We live in a small village, so grow veg, have chickens, ducks and pigs for meat. The local shop has lots of great stuff, so not a great need to leave the village. Into the major town 10kms away there are 100's of shops from normal small stores to massive supermakets, normal really I find it very good, better than the UK for me were I am from. I find it very easy to get fresh good food anywhere. Places to eat out during the day or night are plenty and most seem to serve great food. I would say its as good as anything in New York, but less chance of being mugged. When in the big city we go to Real, M1 Center, Częstochowa.

UK, Ireland / English people attitude towards Poles? [761]

from my experience........ I am English, but moved to Denmark, came back with a Polish wife to the UK last year. My wife works in a pub restaurant with many other Poles, so she deals with the English everyday. She would say 50% don't comment, so we can say they don't mind or care much about it, 20% seem very interested in her accent and ask were she is from, even ask her to tell them more about her home country and 30% are negative towards her as a Pole in Britain. That negativity ranges from comments on her accent as sounding stupid, why she can not speak English very well to having a 1p coin thrown at her face. A minority do try it on, perhaps by not paying the bill, this happens more than with the English staff. She will come home sometimes a very angry woman, she cannot understand how people are so stupid sometimes.

For me as an Englishman and from someone who has been to Poland rather a lot, I do find it hard to see what the English are thinking most of the time, it is by far the most racist country I have lived in, very backward thinking. I have my friends still from years ago, but I have a very big circle of new Polish friends, I enjoy my time with them, my friends idea of a good night out is getting drunk as fast as possible and then having a Kebab, I find the Polish night out way more interesting. 90% seem to have no problem with English people and feel welcome, although do not mix socially with English, 10% seem to feel that they are looked down on as a lower class.

I lived in Denmark for 6 years and was very surprised on my return how Britain had gone downhill. The influx of new workers is from Eastern Europe is resented by a large number of people who see it as taking jobs away from British people or bringing wage levels down. There have been reports of companies laying of UK workers and getting Polish worker to replace them, that is a fact, perhaps not to save money on the wage bill is the only reason, but also that the Poles work harder and complain less, so many people see this and fact and fiction become blurred. However many people see the Poles as hard workers, doing low paid jobs that the British will not do. I have a few English friends who have met my Polish friends here and their ideas about Polish people and Poland have been changed for the better.

A lot of British people are told myths about the Polish people who come here, lots of very daft things, because some UK people are scared or racist, most of it is untrue, but I think its an uphill struggle to get the truth out, many English people think Poles use horse and carts and eat cabbage all day, washed down with vodka, thats not really the case now is it.

I watch out for my Polish friends here, I can see a problem before they do and avert a situation perhaps with someone wanting to cause trouble, the English are not a bad people, just a little brain washed by the media, not good with working things out for themselves.
