History / German POWs after WW2 - did the allies commit mass murder? [228]

I think the problem was the lack of a suitable deterrent. What real threat of punishment was there? My memory fails me, when was the Convention regulating the treatment of POW's? Was it b4 the Genocide Convention?

It's a tragic situation when bad deeds are done and all people do is talk about it.

Again, so true Arien. Emotional scarring is a major problem. I've never been a soldier so I always pinch myself to serve as a reminder that I'm only an armchair commentator. In the heat of the moment, maybe in cold blood after the falling of a comrade, you will act differently.

It's sad that war is glorified. I find it pathetic when America hails its war veterans. A war (Vietnam) that was dragged out unnecessarily to profit the few and scar the many. Britain, at least, had a reason to go to war. Vietnam was no real threat to America. B4 Americans jump down my throat, I applaud their involvement in WWII. They tipped the balance.

I agree, masks. U don't have to resort to murder at all. That is reciprocity and the sign of a backward civilisation. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

Murder should be a last resort in the name of survival. Really, it shouldn't need to happen at all.

Love / More beautiful Polish women: in Warsaw or Krakow? [37]

I can well imagine. In Scotland, we tend to look at the flip side. Which city has the uglier women? LOL. Nah, just kidding. TBH, I've studied with girls in Scotland as good looking as anything I've seen here. For sure, the number of beauties is lower in Scotland but vanity is reduced so I like that.

The question is a bit daft but, if we approach it seriously, studies have suggested that Krakow has the finest women. The truth is, fine women are everywhere. NOT just in Poland

Genealogy / Need info on my Russianized/Ukrainianized last name. [25]

Nah, I was in a stupid mood and I was gonna make a joke about nobody. You know, sb says nobody was the last poster, and I'd say that that was impossible as sb had to have posted, LOL. Dumb really but, hey, we all have such moments.

UK, Ireland / General Maczek's Great Map of Scotland [7]

I agree. Only years later did history get depicted more fairly. People got caught up in a wave of excessive glorification of British achievement. Polish soldiers were dumped, as was the Polish nation.

Life / Which area of Poland speaks the least English? [12]

That's a good sign. People sometimes ask me how good I am at Polish. I just answer by telling them that I know enough to get myself in trouble, and more than enough to get me out of it.

I was really surprised at just how much German was spoken there. I'd've been well and truly stuck without a working knowledge of Polish. After wheeling out what little German I knew, I went to plan B as there was really no plan C.

Ja ja, ich bin aus Schottland. Schottland, ja? Ja, das ist stimmt, richtig. Ich bin lehrer. Aha, werklich? Ja, ja, NO ****.

Well, the last comment signalled the immediate commencement of plan B

Life / Which area of Poland speaks the least English? [12]

U r right, Bart. I was in a place called Ożimek, near Opole. I heard a lot of German. They have a weird dialect there. A guy kept saying chces, chces? to me. He was asking me 'chcesz?'. They seem to have a softer sound, chopping the sz and substituting it with an 's'.

I was invited to a meal there and more German was spoken. My GF and I felt out of place. Although her German is better than mine, it's still only pre-Int at best. I told the guy, who was Polish, please speak to me in Polish. He continued warbling on in German. What a twat!! So I made like a foetus and headed out

Pensions are more of a cumulative thing but, in this day and age, things are less clear cut. There are so many honorary awards dished out, he should have been in line for more recognition.

Love / Are (most) Polish unmarried people virgins? [60]

I know exypnos means smart/clever, that was what I wanted to say. Greek is rich in stem forms. I know Latin reasonably. I guess I could pick up more Greek.

Life / What do people think of Italian Products? [37]

Unreliable but classy. Aprilla, Laverda and Ducati are also classy bikes but they break down so easily.

I don't know if the same applies to their cars. Lamborghini, Ferrari, Maserati etc etc

Life / Deadly Roads - "Are polish roads really THAT dangerous?" [139]

The car behind u will overtake u, LOL. True that. Some fecker got on my goat today for just whizzing through a crossing. It was my frickin right of way (as a pedestrian) but what did that matter to Mr Bigcar Bellend? I swore at him in Spanish, puto is such a nice word.

History / Should we use original name of Berlin - "Kopanica" [103]

Biskupice, yes. I was just antagonising sb who I knew would take the bait. I'm not stupid enough to believe that the Germans named cities in 1940 sth and that they were the original names. Poland is not that new of a country.
