Life / English bilingual publications in Poland [9]

Interfax,

Interfax is a Russian News Agency, but they have bureaux in Central Europe, including Warsaw. I have a few contacts there, though I doubt that they'd pay to relocate you from NY.

Do you have a background in journalism?

I am a writer, but I focus on a particular aspect of Poland... give me a shout if you need any further advice.

Language / Polish Language Basic Guide [19]

This is bloody brilliant!! What a cool idea.

Here are a couple of thoughts:

When I opened it up, I saw that it bwas 3 mins, and I thought - "cool, I could handle one of these a day", but then I realised that there was a lot of grammar.

How about making the conversation - grammar split more like 75-25?

Also, because this is posted on youtube, any captions in the bottom right-hand corner are covered by the youtube logo.

Please, please can we have a chapter on "using the telephone" in Polish?

Let me know if you want any further input on this....

Any particular types / focus?

Interfax news is English, but it is business / financial focused.

There are also a couple of titles that promote Poland in the United Kingdom - I know that some of the editorial is taken care of in Poland.

Are you looking for a job?

Life / Customer Service in Poland, what are your experiences? [106]

If a non english speaker called my office and tried speaking to me in for example Japanese I think I would hang up too!

I've been in that situation lots of times (with Russian and Chinese speakers) and I've always muddled through. The last thing that I would do is greet the caller with a deep sigh, as if to say "I was in the middle of filing my nails when you disturbed me".

Have you tried saying good morning, Do you speak english?

Sure - and I always crank up the friendly - smiley voice in these situations. Makes no difference... click click... brrrr....

Life / Customer Service in Poland, what are your experiences? [106]

My biggest gripe is whenever I call a business in Poland:

My call is usually greeted with a huge sigh when Magda* on reception realises that I don't speak Polish. Sometimes, she just hangs up...

OK, fair enough... maybe it's my fault for not speaking Polish, however I find the huge sigh totally disrespectful. And surely, she can work out that I am looking to speak to <insert name here>

* not a real person, just a generic name that I've given all receptionists.

Long story

Don't be coy - share it....

Surely it can't be as bad as the time when I was living in Germany and had to throw a tantrum which almost resulted in the police being called, because I wasn't getting a basic level of service at a certain mobile phone company...

Care to elaborate?

I find that it goes from one extreme to the other: Either spot on and just right (efficient attentive, but not in your face) or just dire - sulky and uncooperative.

Life / Poland's crazy parties [8]

i once went to a new year's eve party with nutters running around with lit fireworks in their hands

That sounds like the Sylwester that I spent in Krakow a few years ago... broken bottles, drunken people running around with fireworks. To my knowledge nobody got hurt.

Life / Polish Youth - are they violent? [71]

From my experiences in Poland, I've met some really scary looking guys (all skinny and scowley skinheads) who turned out to be absolute sweethearts once I got talking to them.

News / Post Office Strike. Polish News. [14]

Can anyone tell me if this is this all sorted out now? I am waiting for some documents in the post (from Poland to UK) and I can't plan my next trip there until I receive it.

UK, Ireland / ARE YOUNG BRITS LESS INTELLIGENT THAN POLES? [56]

The English education system is very different from that in Poland but it is very important to understand that intelligence doesn't come from from education alone.

Very true.

Think of all those academics that you've met who can barely tie their shoelaces.

Travel / Small Baltic coast places - where to stay ? [25]

I was in Kolobrzeg - awesome place. Fish and chips down at the harbour and lively bars :) And am kicking myself for not bringing my running shoes, as it would have been a brilliant place to go running....

Travel / Is train travel recommended for tourists in Poland [14]

First time I visited Poland, I did a lot of travel into Budapest and Prague - a young (ish) girl travelling alone, and didn't encounter any problems. There were lots of older ladies travelling on the over-night trains.

This is a really useful site for international train travel: seat61.com

Travel / Clean, safe, comfortable hotels to stay in Warsaw? [12]

It depends - sometimes travel agents can get group discounts and they pass it on to the client. Sometimes they just add a bit of a mark-up.

What about Polonia Palace? Gorgeous hotel...

Travel / Polish spa resorts [10]

Any more tips? What do I wear to go out at night there?

Same kind of style as I'd wear in Warsaw (a slightly toned-down version of what I wear to go out in London)?

This seems like a really dim / pointless question, but I'm going to be on my own and don't want to stick out like a sore thumb LOL!!

Travel / Is it safe to take a train in Poland? [35]

I travelled around Poland by train the first time I went there and was fine (young girl on her own). In fact, I had no choice - I was on a business trip that had been arranged by the company that I was working for at the time. I figured that it had to be fairly safe if my employers thought it was.

You have to keep your wits about you everywhere these days... not just on Polish trains.

UK, Ireland / Polish Entrepreneurs wanted to expand in Europe [19]

Well, if it looks like a duck...

Seeing as you’re being candid here, Nobby – mind if I ask you why MLM type schemes are shrouded in so much blurb before they get to the point? e.g change your life... enjoy your freedom... enjoy luxury holidays and the latest sports car. Why is the fact that you are flogging phone lines / aloe vera / overpriced vitamins etc usually the bit that comes last?

Sorry, I am just really curious about this stuff.
