Life / Good Polish Music: disco polo, rock, and club music [33]

So, tell me all about Ramona Rey... I kept seeing her latest video on Viva when I was in Poland earlier in the week. Funky music... liked it a lot. Any other tunes to listen out for?

Also Feel - brilliant band, and I saw them playing live :) How big are they in Poland?

Love / Polish Gay Life [142]

Are there many gay Polish people in the UK

I'm sure that I've seen some Polish boys when I've been in gay clubs in London. Do you go out on the scene? Soho, Vauxahll etc?

and are they attracted to black people?

Some will be, some wont.

Life / Customer Service in Poland, what are your experiences? [106]

She was probably just about to finish her shift and needed to total up all her takings for the day

That could have been the case, but it put me right off. Up until then, I'd been enjoying the evening in a pleasant market square at sunset, enjoying the food and drink.

I might have stayed for desert, but the way in which she demanded payment really soured things for me.

News / What does Poland mean to you? [66]

I don't remember what you said you were going to wear.

I decided to keep it simple... and left the fascinator at home. Ditto the faux bling and the evening gloves.

A fun night - lots of dancing (though I seemed to be the only lady who kicked off her shoes to dance... my feet were killing me!).

Life / Customer Service in Poland, what are your experiences? [106]

At the end of the day, it's all about respect - and showing a little bit of respect for somebody who is going to spend their hard earned pennies (or zloty) and has decided to spend it your shop or on your service.

There's no need for it to be OTT as it can be in the states, yet at the same time, there is simply no excuse for sulky couldn't-care-less attitude.

By the way - does this seem off? I was in Poland earlier in the week, and went to an al fresco cafe, where I ordered some food and a drink. When the food arrived, I was given a slip of paper with the price. I figured that it would be ok to pay once I'd eaten. Yet the waitress came and asked me to pay as I was half way through eating.. I had my mouth full too LOL!. That annoyed me - couldn't she have waited until I was finished? It's not like I could have done a runner :)

Awww... well remembered :)

Yes, everything went well - though I did have a bit of a heavy head the next day.

Travel / Give me your hand-luggage only tips, please... [13]

Cheers, Clouddancer.

Unfortunately it's a business trip (so I guess I'll need something smartish to wear to a meeting), plus I've got to pack some formal eveningwear. I was also hoping to pack my running gear too.

Waaaah!! Back to the drawing board :)

And after all that, I decided to spend the extra £16 and pay for checked luggage :)

Here's a quote from the DoT website:

The following is a guide to the security requirements for all passengers departing from UK airports and also provides some advice that will help passengers pass through the security search point as quickly as possible.

Key points to remember:

With effect from 7 January 2008, the one item restriction will no longer apply at certain airports. Click here for more details. The maximum size for items of hand luggage is 56cm x 45cm x 25cm per bag. However, airlines apply their own operational policies governing the number of items of hand baggage which may be taken in to the aircraft cabin.
Before departing we strongly suggest you check with your airline on the cabin baggage arrangements for your particular journey.
Where possible, put all liquid items in your hold baggage. This includes water and other drinks, creams, sprays, pastes and gels.
Liquids, gels and aerosols are only allowed in individual containers of 100ml. All containers must fit comfortably in one, transparent, re-sealable bag no larger than 20cm x 20cm (eg a freezer bag).
We strongly recommend that you take time to read the guidance below before setting off for the airport.

I was wondering whether any other PFers had any "Take a Break" style tips for sticking to these rules.

Cheers guys - yup got my zip-lock bag and am decanting everything into smaller bottles as per the regulations.

Does lip gloss still count as a liquid?

Travel / Give me your hand-luggage only tips, please... [13]

I'm making a v. short trip to Poland later this week (2 nights away to be exact) and when I booked my flight, I thought that I'd save a few quid by not taking any checked luggage.

Hmmm... starting to regret this, as I've got to pack a couple of changes of clothes plus take lots of make-up and other assorted lotions and potions.

I'm sure there are plenty of PFers who've travelled to Poland without hand-luggage, so let's have your tips!!

Travel / Cheap airlines are not THAT cheap anymore ! [30]

When are they travelling Spiritus? Peak times / weekends?

I'm travelling to Szczecin and back later this week with Ryan Air (without checked luggage, mind you) and the total spend is £80.

Birds singing

Whenever I speak to my mate in Warsaw on skype, I always hear birds singing in the background.

I'm sure that all he can hear at my end is sirens and the drunks in the park outside my window.

but i think its important people know the truth

True, however I felt that the post with the clip seemed a bit... well... stirring up the pot. Maybe I'm being a bit sensitive about it :)

it means you are human....

What I find most disturbing about this clip is that I have a very dear friend who is gay and also a muslim. Even though he's living in London, he really does have a tough time of it :(

I find that clip very disturbing, and to be honest think that you are rather sick for posting it - it strikes me that you are simply stirring up sh1t rather contributing to the debate and banter on PF.

Life / COMMERCIALLY DRIVEN SUBCULTURES? [14]

I lived in Wandsworth for a few months when I first moved to London, 8 years ago.

I just couldn't identify with the crowds on Old York Road... and getting trampled on by sloaney pony wannabes with pink pashminas, pointy shoes and the ubiquitous Starbucks paper cup on the train from Clapham Junction into central London every morning.

Been living in my Shoreditch bubble ever since LOL! :P

Life / COMMERCIALLY DRIVEN SUBCULTURES? [14]

OK, here goes (and this is purely a b1tchy observation mate by me and a guy that I used to work with):

Typically second jobbers living in Clapham or SW London, they to go watching the rugby at "Twickers" and go skiing in Mirabelle in Winter. They drive round SW London in a VW Golf Cabrio, and wear their sunglasses on top of their heads.

He is head to toe TM Lewin Monday to Friday, and Hackett at the weekend.

She is head to toe TM Lewin Monday to Friday and likes a bit of Karen Millen at the weekend. Usually "TV anchor" hair. And always a pale pink pashmina - no matter what time of year.

They listen to Coldplay and Toploader at dinner parties (recipes courtesy of Jamie Oliver or Nigella), and like to go out in large groups to restaurants, where they'll drink a few glasses of Pimms too many and start screeching hysterically about funny things that happened on their gap year in Cambodia....

Life / COMMERCIALLY DRIVEN SUBCULTURES? [14]

No marketing man could ever have created the crusty / squat party scene, though? Crusties and squatters don't really represent a target market with disposable income.

But then again, some scenes - like from goths and harajuku to sloney ponies and what I refer to as "The Clapham Set" all represent a whole lifestyle - from clothes, to restaurants, magazines to cars etc.

The gay scene has its own sub cultures - bears, twinkies, muscle cubs etc. and sure, each represents its own unique marketing potential.

Life / Goth scene in Poland [30]

I love to dip into the goth style, and often get mistaken for one - I just love the drama and theatre of it all, though I'm not really a goth, as I don't really like the music.

Language / POLISH LANGUAGE CONTRIBUTIONS TO ENGLISH [11]

Which came first? Russian or Polish though?

I'd be inclined to guess Russian, because English language spells it vodka rather than wodka...

Vodka comes from wódka.

I thought that this stemmed from Russian though... diminutive of water "voda" (sorry, I don't have cyrillic keys on my laptop).

Travel / Renting vehicles and maps in Poland [11]

So why not go all out?

Do you really want to draw attention to yourself though? I'd rather spend the money on a big night out etc. than a "look at me" set of wheels.

Life / English bilingual publications in Poland [9]

I am an accidental writer :)

I have been an expert in a particular industry for a couple of years, and ended up having a lot of my articles on the subject published. I then grew my scope - I now write for various types of publication in the UK and Poland... mainly travel, lifestyle and also gay issues.

My best advice is "if you don't ask, you don't get". Cold call a couple of editors - you never know, they might just have a gap for you. Don't worry if they don't... you might hear from them a couple of months down the road.
