Work / Advice on WHEN to go to Poland to teach English [30]

I suppose you can look for a job all year round. Some teachers quit during the school year, especially women, for maternity leaves.
But August is certainly a good time to look for a job which is going to start in September/October.

Language / ANGLOS HAVE TROUBLE WITH SZCZ, SOME WITH TRILLED 'R' [22]

Oh, not an easy name, indeed ;) Can every Pole pronounce it without any difficulty? ^^

I think so...

I think so.
This Chrząszczyrzywoszyce thing is more problematic, because at first I wasn't able to remember the whole word, it's so long and its second part (-rzywoszyce) doesn't sound similar to any Polish words :)
Nevertheless it's not hard to pronounce once you remember it.

Yes, it requires a little practice. I also couldn`t remember it at first, now it takes me milliseconds to utter it.
But I can`t agree the second past of the word doesn`t ring the bell. It reminds me of the surname Rzewuski.

Language / ANGLOS HAVE TROUBLE WITH SZCZ, SOME WITH TRILLED 'R' [22]

One way to explain to an English speaker how to pronounce teh common szcz in Polish is to have them say such words as SUGGESTION. The 'st' in that word effectively approximates the Polish szcz.
The trilled Scottish 'r' is more problematic esp. for Americans unaccustomed to that sound, even though they are probably saying it all the time without knowing it. I recall one student I couldn't get to say robota, rasa, uta, etc. for the life me.
But this same speaker in his native English was saying geryń for gettign, beryń for betting, lołryń for loading and bołryń for boating, as is the custom of many Americans. After much effort of having him repeat geryń umpteen times I had him switch into ryba, and finally he got it.

Good you are explaining it. The English native speakers are always having problems with pronouncing my name. It contains a lot of hissing consonants.

My name is Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz, powiat Chrząszczyrzewoszyce.

News / What you think about the Polish President, Kaczynski? [53]

Yes, I agree with you. Kaczynscy head the list of biggest populists in Poland. :):):)

Heartbreaking...

Yes. I was crying while saying it.... Looking at the picture of Tusk hanging above my bed!

News / What you think about the Polish President, Kaczynski? [53]

Having said this - Poland really does need to elect some leaders with some charisma. Tusk has absolutely no charisma and is safely one of the most boring PM's in Europe.

I can agree he has no charisma but it is not a problem. I am not a sheep (sorry Seanus) who needs a charismatic leader. I like Tusk for being so normal. A boy from the neighbourhood.

Meanwhile Kaczynski just appears to be a lost little old man who needs taken back to the care home.

I can agree now. :):):)

Food / FLAKI (TRIPE) OUT OF A JAR? [14]

They say tastes change every 7 years. I used to hate flaki too, when one day a dozen years ago, after a strenuous work out, I felt I could eat a horse. So I ate flaki and it was delicious.

You might still change your mind/taste.... How long ago was the last major change???

Life / 52% Poles: life in Poland is bad... [46]

An unemployed person, not an unemployed. Unemployed is an adjective of status. Still, I remain impressed by the writing skills of Poles on this forum. Well done guys, you know who you are.

Sorry, Seanus, but I don`t treat it too seriously. I used to try to speak/write nice English, the one I was taught at school and university, the decent language based on high literature and Queen`s speeches. Posh!

With the passage of time, I realised there is no need to be so polished up. It sounds too extravagant. I have seen incredible mistakes committed by native speakers, and nobody cared, including other natives speakers. I have seen language short-cuts which looked like mistakes but they weren`t because I asked learned guys and they said the curious usages of language were acceptable.

So, can you bear in mind that from now on we are going to use an unemployed as a singular noun, similarly to the plural the unemployed????

In this way we are creating a language precedence which is going to be used widely in 10 years time, not only by people in this forum but worldwide.

You have a chance to join us now!

Poles dissatisfied with President and government
Polish Radio
16.12.2008

73% of Poles say that Lech Kaczyñski is a bad president, according to
results of a December poll by TNS OBOP. Only 21% say that the
President is good at his duties.

Meanwhile opinions on Prime Minister Donald Tusk are halved: 47% say
he is a good premier, 44% say he is not.

59% of respondents were critical of the whole government in contrast
to 35% who were satisfied with its work.

Life / FISH SYMBOL ON POLISH CARS? [37]

But was it around before the collapse of communism? Of course, there weren't that many cars on the road back then.

That is a good question. C9ommunism collapsed 19 years ago. It is too long to remember, besides I wasn`t interested in such things then.

But yes, I remember seeing such a sign as a student. My friends explained it to me. It was in 1980s.
But probably it wasn`t so widespread as today. So we can say it is growing after all. :):):)

It is a symbol of Christianity. Haven`t you read Quo Vadis? That`s how Christians in Nero`s Rome recognised their brethren in faith.

And it is not growing, it has always been here.

Life / Polish views towards the Brits and all other "natives" [26]

I once had an inferiority complex. I used to be a resident of an ex-communist country which tried to learn democracy and dreamt of prosperity.

Until I saw this advertisement in one of Krakow`s pubs, frequented by British tourists.

I was cured of all inferiority complexes on the spot! :):):):)

Ruskies are not stupid:They make some great technologies

Apart from being intelligent, they are also beautiful. A Russian woman won Miss World 2008.

She is really nice. If not for that heavy make up around her eyes, she would be perfect.

And Poles, what an average Pole drives? Just dont refer on Katyn and how Russians steal your property!

:):) I am not going to let myself be drawn into such a silly exchange. You are visibly flying off handle. :):):) which makes a discussion senseless.

Hey, maybe you are only pretending to be Russian???? And you are here on a clandestine mission to do everything to defame the Russian nation... ????

The end is that an average German drives a Mercedes while an average Russian drives his poor wife crazy with his alcoholism which is going to finish abruptly at 57 years of age, the average life span of males in Russia.

For sure it's not my opinion but rather common in China.
And it makes any assimilation very hard.

Not only Russians are considered lower civilisation by the Chinese. Other too. Don`t forget it, for the Chinese everything behind their Great Wall is "barbarian" lands. :):):)

I know another "great" nation who thought that it high above Russian. Should I remind you the end of this story?

Boooouuuu... :):):)

Can you see now what avalanche you created with your stupid provocations??? Both Poles and Russians got buried under it.

Is that what you wanted to achieve? It is a peculiar form of masochism, I must say :):):)

Russia should join west it would be very good for Russia.

Only the West and USA can prevent an all-out war between Russia and China for the Far East territories, now under Russian control. Russia must start cooperating with the West if she wants to keep these lands....

Otherwise, 100 million Chinese will die one day to get them, killing 100 million Russians in the process. For China it will be a fraction of its population, for Russia it will be extermination.

Actually I prefer to see Poland as integral part of Russia with Poles as faithfull subjects. It will be ideal for both nations.

No, thanks. Chinese culture is magnificent indeed but I don`t want to live in China. :):):)

News / All this mess about Danzig... [122]

A land that doesn't commemorate the valiant efforts of its forefathers should hang its head in shame.

:):):) Seanus, we are talking about Soviet Russian soldiers who liberated Poland from Nazis.
Most Poles see it as a next occupation, implemented by another anti-Polish regime.

But I know several cases when Russians did save Poles from annihilation ordered by Nazis at last moments of war in a given area.

Pointing on the fate of Kalingrad as an example of "Russian barbarism" you hypocriticaly omit the circumstances which leaded to this devastation.

Constantine, I am Constantly trying to teach you something. Whenever you write a post like that:

Yes, indeed. The only things you might recall with proud are the deeds of hoary antiquity.

I meddle in and correct you. I am not angry or sth, by no means. I am amused. But I don`t know how it happens that Russian barbarism always surfaces up on such occasions. :):):):):)

So, a lesson to be learnt by you: stop writing provocative posts about Poles because it turns against you! :):):):):):)

I meant those Russians who lie in Polish land deserved to be honored as liberators of Poland.

Soon I will post a few pics showing the ceremony.

pawian you talk about this town as about German town ...
but before WWII it was in big part Polish city...

I read that 98% of Gdańsk population was German or considered themselves such.
Which big Polish part are you talking about? :):):):)
I suppose you are trying to speak metaphorically, the Post Offices in Gdańsk was merely 40 patriotic Poles but they could stand for 4000 Germans.

Bikes huh??? The connection between two parts of a country through bikes???
How generous!
And it's true...no autobahn, no railway...Poles didn't even wanted to negotiate!

If Germans had waited 20 more years, all national animosites would have subsided.

But no, they wanted to have their railway, highway, Gdańsk, and a few other at once, without waiting. Revenge for the Versailles Treaty now!!

They were impatient and started the war. In result, they could kiss goodbye not only to Gdańsk but whole Eastern Prussia and some parts of ethnic German territories on the Oder River too.

History punishes those who are not able to wait patiently. :):):):)

Yes, indeed. The only things you might recall with proud are the deeds of hoary antiquity.

No, I cannot agree with you.

The fact that Poles rebuilt Gdańsk which was looted and burnt in 80% by the Soviet Army is also a reason to feel pride. Soviet Russians destroyed the European cultural heritage because it was alien to them, look what they did with Konigsberg, today called Kaliningrad. This city ceased to exist during WW2 too and was never rebuilt in its original shape. Today it still frightens visitors with its architecture of socialist concrete monsters.

Poles felt committed to reconstruct a lot of destroyed Gdańsk`s architecture and that is what I am proud of. They were able to throw off primitive national prejudice and treated Gdańsk not as German but as European city.

Do you know what I mean? :):):)

Compare:

Gdańsk before WW2:

During

After

Konigsberg, before

Today`s Kaliningrad, the Old Town.

A modern palace, Party Headquarters
