Language / Classes, books, audio books, CDs? - best way to start to learn Polish! [23]

I don't speak Polish (will be starting in September if time permits), however I do speak several other languages.

Classes are great because you have a teacher who can correct you, plus you can learn from other people's mistakes etc. Also, having to be at a regular class at a set time each week and having to submit homework etc. will keep you on track.

What works for me is to surround myself with the language as much as possible. Hang out with Poles, listen to Polish Radio (I'm listening to Radio Orla - internet radio as I type), pick up a copy of Panorama or Cooltura (both are free) and see how much you can understand... even if it's just the text on an advertisement for phone cards.

Travel / Best way to get from Gdansk Airport to Kolobrzeg [19]

Cool - thanks, that's good to know.

As much as I love Kołobrzeg, I really don't want to see the train station ever again.... last time I was there, the staff were really unhelpful when I was trying to get to Szczecin, and sold me a train ticket, even there were no trains in that direction for at least 4 hours :(

Travel / The best way to get around Warsaw? [7]

Praga

What's it like there? My mate in Warsaw tells me that it's more or less a no go area, however I get the impression that it's OK, if a little edgy... like Kreuzberg in Berlin or Shoreditch in London.

Cheers chaps.... so any idea how much a taxi from Koszalin to Kołobrzeg would cost? I guess it's got to be a lot less than the PLN 350 that I paid to get a taxi from Kołobrzeg to Szczecin airport LOL!!

Life / Present for Polish friends ~ is anything hard to get any more? [57]

Tea is usually my gift of choice (unless it's for a really good friend, and I have a better idea of their taste / stuff that they're into and know that they'd appreciate). You can get some fancy tins of Earl Grey, Darjeeling, English Breakfast etc. in places like Wittard, though Fortnum & Mason or Harrods usually go down well. Match it with a tartan tin of shortbread.

For a more personal gift, how about some nice bath products from Molton Brown or Crabtree & Evelyn - to my knowledge, you can't get these brands in Poland.

Life / Swimming certificate/bribing the bureaucrats in Poland [13]

Do you still have to have a swimming pass, and if so how can I get around the problem now?

Not any more. The only trouble that I had last time I went to a swimming pool in Poland was trying to figuire out what time I could get into the pool, as there were lots of elderly people having an aqua-aerobics class, and the pool staff wouldn't just let me swim up and down in the background.

You're right. i was going by the list of connections on the Polish National Tourist Office website, but just checked on the EJ website and Bristol - Gdansk isn't there.

Back to the drawingboard.....

if there is anything i can do to help you make your journey and stay here more pleasant...just let me know

Cheers m'dear - I'll bear that in mind. I should have given you a shout last time I was there, a few weeks ago.

its going to be bloody freezing...

Not "bracing" then? I've got this idea of getting wrapped up, going for various walks then hanging out in the spas and having loads of treatments and a few beers in the evening. Am I being optimistic with that? Or will it be like Weston-Super-Mare in November? LOL!

Cheer Bramkaz - in fact the Mastertrans link is very handy. I actually used them on my last trip there, but (and its a long story why), I ended up having to get a taxi back to Szczecin airport on the way back <weep>

I'm thinking about meeting up in Kolobrzeg with some friends from Bristol, so ideally they would fly to Gdansk from Bristol Airport rather than schlep to Stansted.

The question is in the title really. Any idea how long it would take and the best way to get there (ideally on public transport)? Szczecin is the nearest airport, but the transport connections are quite limited.

Also, what's Kolobrzeg like in Winter? I've only been there in Summer - am thinking about going there later in the year. Either Autumn or over new year.

Travel / What are nightclubs like in Warsaw...? [33]

next morning

The first question that I always ask is... "was I being obnoxious or making a twat of myself last night?" LOL!

Aha - so you went to Barbados before it closed......I loved the place.

You know what, I've been many places in Warsaw... but I can never the remember their names LOL!

Sure, there are tacky nightclubs which will attract the clones wearing H+M's finest... but I'd have thought there would be more of an edgy / underground scene somewhere. What about in Praga?

UK, Ireland / Polish Music Festival in London (and I'm a bit miffed) [22]

polish music is crap so why would you want to go anyway. ?

Not it's not. I tend to have Polish internet radio on while I'm working - they play some good stuff.

or start practicing more Polish:)

Very good point. I plant to start my classes in September ;)

UK, Ireland / Polish Music Festival in London (and I'm a bit miffed) [22]

This looks like an interesting event: pkobplondonlive.pl

HOWEVER, am I being unreasonable for being a bit miffed that the website is exclusively in Polish? I feel kind of excluded :(

A massive oversight on the part of the organisers, as I've been getting into Polish music recently... listening to Polish internet radio plus I went to a pretty cool gig last time I was in Kolobrzeg.

USA, Canada / Are holidays to Florida popular in Poland? [21]

You can even play with guns at Reigs's gun store (I'm sure that you can find all the info if you google)... once spent an afternoon firing Glock 9mm and Magnum 40s alongside a dad teaching his 12 year old kid to shoot.

American women fall in LOVE with the English accents so that'll be good too

Hmm... English accents are ten a penny in Orlando I'm afraid.
