No,just an everyday russian on the street type,genuinly interests me,is it a hark back to the days of being Big Man? Is it because stalin was efectivly a persona non grata since the 1950s so he is somehow detached from the memories of crumbling soviet power in the 80s ,like some sort of Rock Star he died before the dream got old? There is apparently( isay apparently because I know very little on the subject) a very good botanical gardens in Gliwice ,set in a nice park and,if I recal all "victorian" ironwork and glass main building. The local student who was showing me around raved about it and he seemed to know his stuff ,pointing to all sorts of plants and splurrging out fancy sounding names...I think I shattered a myth that day,the one about "englishmen" all loving gardening.

One thing you notice about Polish farms,or indead Poland,when you fly in is that the border with germany is clear.One side is large pastureland,the other,the Polish side turns into almost medievil style strip farms(not a slur,if it aint broke,dont fix it :) ) ,narrow strips of different crops,its very colourfull,and as I say ,almost a time machine ride into a long forgoton scenery for western europe.

Sorry M' got to be with Bubba on this,those cracked me up. I dont know what its like in Poland but here in the UK if a disaster happens the first thing you hear is whats happened,the second thing you hear is a joke,often within hours they fly round the country.Nothing is sacred,all topics covered from maddie jokes to 9/11 jokes,not all funny but a few.Its a way of dealing with things,it was the same in the Blitz,you lost your home/wife/favourite carddie and slippers there would be a joke.

You should hear the humor of our Police and fire service,anything you hear on this forum is safe for granny compared to the humor of british emergency workers.

Sorry,if this was true,why am I not speaking German then? USA,enters war on December the 11th 1941,only after silly tasch declares war.the hun had from june 6th 1940 to febuary 1942(when first US units arrived in UK ) to "kick our arses" and failed miserably. Face it, gitler never came close to subjuing the British nation and never would have.Even if some hun troops had crossed the channel "Britain"( govt,armed forces high command,royals etc) would have essentially upped sticks and moved to Canada where all our gold was.

I dont argue with this point one bit. It was the world rising up to stop the nazis that cracked the nut. Still we did hold out pretty much alone(with dribs and drabs of allies) and did indeed kick rommels arse all the way back to berlin.

I'll qualify my objections to those 3 points;


Only if you take WW2 as starting on sept 1st 1939. In britain and france ww2 started on the third of sept '39 and both nations had forces fighting till the end. Some could say ww2 started much earlier say in Spain in 36 where the main protaganists fought a proxy war,in which case ......ya get the picture :) or didnt start as a true World War until Japan became involved .....


True,but Poland had a much larger force on the east front than britain or france,but not ,technicaly under the same Polish government as the rest ,in the west.(so,maybe for real pedants ....nah,lets not go there :) )

And the last bit,many Poles worked at Bletchley park,it wasnt a Brits only "party" .
