News / The Lisbon Treaty and land reperations [74]

Polish citizens fighting for Nazi Germany were traitors. Full stop.

Well...you are admiring China too...something is seriously off with you!

as many of his re-enforcements at Monte Cassino came from Poles previoulsy conscripted into the Werhmacht.

Yeah...I can envision it:

...at the POW camp:

"Hey...you being a Volksdeutscher?
"Umm...ja..."
*pistol get's pointed at his head*
"You for sure want to fight for the good Poles now, won't you!"
*gulp*
"Sure...sure...I always wanted to, the bad Germans forced me but now
I'm happy to fight for my real home country as a true Pole!"

Very disapointing, BB. You quoting Goebbels is beneath you.

What has the Blood Sunday in Bromberg to do with Goebbels? Did he kill all the german civilians?

And I would be careful to call anybody and his grandmom a traitor just because he didn't want to fight for Poland...
Poland in this time was not exactly comfy to his minorities (especially the Germans) in their new republic, dreaming of an ethnical cleansed Greater Poland.

Most Germans weren't asked if they wanted to be Poles! (And there where they had been asked the opinon was very clear about it)

He was a traitor, through and through. A true patriot would die for their country - and in such times, choosing to sign the list rather than die for their country was nothing but cowardice.

Crap!
Interwar Poland was rife with ethnic tensions, hate and violence...
Why should a Pole with german ancestry die for a polish Poland where he was hated and unwanted???
Often he was forced to become polish citizen rather then stay German because thanks to the Treaty of Versailles former german land fell now under polish rule? That's what happened to Bromberg...

Would you call Poles fighting and chosing polish rule during the partititions rather than german rulership traitors to Germany too??

(On the other hand nobody was forced to subscribe the Liste as Volksdeutscher I. So if he hadn't there wouldn't had been the call to the arms....)

If it weren't the Sudeten it would be something else...he would find another threadbare reason not to subscribe.
(Because he didn't mentioned them before, didn't he)
We should just sit him out...he can't stay in power for eternity! :)
He is totally isolated now...

I can't let bygones be bygones.

Well..you better do!
In not doing that you risk our future...

If you must have to have a farm in Poland why not buy some land there and settle?

History / Matters of Propaganda...Or: how was the West portrayed in Poland? [150]

Anyway, I cannot believe that nudism was the only thing Eastern-Blokes did as act of "civilian disobedience".

Nudism as act of civilian disobedience??? Who is talking such crap???
Nudism has it's roots in a "green" lifestyle in Germany back to the beginning of the last century.
Nothing political about it!
And surely nothing "eastern"...

/wiki/Naturism

...Naturism or nudism is a cultural and political movement advocating and defending social nudity in private and in public. It may also refer to a lifestyle based on personal, family and/or social nudism.[1][2]

You only need your helmet anyhow...:)

News / European Quality Of Life Index: Poland in the middle [29]

The best place to live is where there is home. All other statistics dont matter.

Well...how do you explain the millions of immigrants from all over the world to poor little western Europe?

Plus... wherever you get to have the money...that place can turn into paradise.

Isn't that contradicting your earlier statement:

The best place to live is where there is home.

You're doped already at this hour??? ;)

Edit: ah, it's the Daily Mail. Thank God, we don't have to take it too seriously then.

The Telegraph too...this study isn't made by a paper, they are just writing about it...don't shoot the messenger! :)

France best, UK worst but Germany and Poland together in the middle..whoa!
(We should really merge...)

Soon the English will come to Poland for work...*ducks*

(But I had thought Italy or Sweden higher...)

History / Did Ukraine really "steal" Polish land? [302]

Paradoxally, most Poles exiled from Lwów came to Wrocław to replace exiled Germans, my family among them.

Yes...I read of it...most people now living in Silesia are eastern Poles. Changing the face of this part of the land irrevocably.

Sok? Given the possibility...would you try to make it back to the home of your forefathers?
I personally would love to get to know Breslau but couldn't probably be arsed to relocate there..

History / Did Ukraine really "steal" Polish land? [302]

Really, I see a perfect analogy between Lviv and German city of Breslau which used to be Polish before Adam and Eva

Adam and Eva were definitely german! God told me so...;)

By the way Natha presidents of Lwów under Habsburg occupation:

Well, when I bring a centuries old list from Germans in Danzig or Breslau from back as far as 1400 you discard all this but now demand from Nathan that he should accept a list from 1800???

It seems with you it can only be the Poles always be right, right? Everybody else is wrong and can't have a possible claim...

Polonia / Any thoughts on religion in Russia from Poland? [9]

A gay foreign minister will befriend easily all female foreign ministers and some male ones for sure.
I would like to watch a private ministers tet-a-tet in this case. They will find solutions for most problems.(give me some military help if I...).

Manno...that sounds like an upcoming very successful time for german foreign policy!

History / Matters of Propaganda...Or: how was the West portrayed in Poland? [150]

Antifaschistischer Schutz.

So it was called.

It was meant to keep fascism out of the DDR.

Never....western Germany wasn't fascist and it was build only after so many people left already, with more packing their bags that schools had to be closed because there weren't any teachers left or no milk could get delivered because not enough milkmen left etc.etc.etc.

"Ein Land ohne Menschen!"

History / Matters of Propaganda...Or: how was the West portrayed in Poland? [150]

The wall was to keep individuals in

Erm....really? I hadn't thought of that...

What was that mass DDR anti-communist movement called again?

The church more or less!
There was the only place the dissidents could meet....

I dunno. Must be something in the blood.

You mean " the brave polish race"? Another myth...

Matyjasz gave you a list for your research.

I read them, did you? Some riots, how Borrka would call them...nothing more, nothing less!

Don't be silly.

I'm not, a honest question.
MILLIONS of eastern Germans made their choice clear with their feet. The commies in East Berlin NEEDED the wall to keep going.
But still people kept trying to leave and over 1300 people got killed for that. Not to mention those who were caught and spend the rest of their lives in Gulags...

It was badly needed for rebuilding the country after 60% of its infrastructure has been destroyed by the Germans during WW2.

Well...somehow rocks and stone were still there even after the Soviets plundered the land for reparations...don't tell me Poland didn't even have rocks?

WTF are you talking about. You bounce back between denying other countries had uprisings and using some connections among them (or lack thereof) to prove what? That Germans got beat once by the commies and they stayed put?

Well...an uncomfortable reminder that not all Poles were as brave and resisting as you would like them to be....

I spoke to one Czech guy on the train. He appreciated our bravery

Yeah..and I got visited by a martian last night...seriously!

Problem with DDR was that individuals tried to escape but there was no mass movement

No mass movement? Millions left the GDR...how would you call that??? That's why the wall was build in the first place!
Don't make me laugh..

I would say yes! It's Poles who here won't have any other resisting than them...that's what the whole bruhaha is about! I find it despisable actually...but it's not me who had started that downtalking of other victims of communism!

In Poland they died trying to free it.

Where? When? What makes Poles so much more brave and resisting than any other people in the eastern bloc? What made Poles so much "tougher" as you said?

Remember it was YOU starting to downtalk other commie countries.

Why should I do your homework? The information is not hard to get.

I don't even know where to start with Poland...but I know about the brave Czechs and Hungarians!

Your 900 pale in comparison to thousands of Poles resisting from day one of commie rule in Poland.

Oh really? Do you have a number, a statistic for me? I mean something else instead of empty phrases....

Did the polish communists ever needed to build a wall to keep the people in and the state alive and functioning? No? I thought so...

Check Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland.

Why? The only connection I see is polish troops invading Czechoslovakia to help to kill the uprising of the Prague spring...anything else?

History / Matters of Propaganda...Or: how was the West portrayed in Poland? [150]

Nope...Gorbatschov said more or less "What you do or don't do is not our concern anymore! It's your country."
Then all descended into tohuwabohu...the GDR own troops could have fired but they didn't.
They just didn't dare without the backing of the soviet troops...and the motivation between the conscripts just wasn't high enough.

The border troops for example got just overwhelmed by the masses and instead to fire at them stepped back and let them through....

Do you have a source? Wiki claims anywhere from ~100-200...

Most likely even more, many cases are still open.
The 200 are the number most likely only of the inner-Berlin victims. The other numbers is also for victims killed trying to leave over the Baltic sea or everywhere else at this border...

But not all got to the western media at all!

Avenging East Germans Killed in Bulgaria

They are the forgotten victims of the Berlin Wall. The East Germans who were killed attempting to flee through Bulgaria. At least 18 were shot by border guards, mowed down with as few scruples as those murdered along the death strip that was Germany's inner border
