Work / Moving to Poland with my work - which town should I choose? [25]

If you're over 35 and still unmarried then I think the only thing for it is to go to Berlin (or basically just don't come to Poland.)

lol. I guess everybody over 35 in Poland has their cemetery plot reserved already and all they do is walking around with rosary in their hands...hehehe.

(what a moronic statement you've made, arrgghh)

I hear Wroclaw is it.

USA, Canada / Rationing food in some US-based stores [32]

Exactly z_d, it went east, that's why only green could get it to my brother quickly.
(BTW, I worked briefly in Nowiny II, near Kielce, before I left).

Still, Poland abounds in cement. Always has.

That's a silly statement. In the early 80's - for the green ones only.

the scams such as Pewex, i.e. it was available, but only for hard currency.

You're are correct. It was just paid for here in the US in greens and then delivered right away. My brother would have to bribe heavily or be "on the list" to get some.

Some people just love SUV and don't give a darn how much they burn. My co-worker replaced her beige Chevy Blazer with another one last month, this time it is red :)

I used to do that...sending spices like cloves, bay leaves, cacao, sweets...clothes of course, even a cement for my brother's house (Portland 'something').

Polamer took care of that. :)

Food / Packet soups recommended or not [32]

Isn't Knorr a German brand? I love their Goulash and Sourbraten, but never seen ogorkowa from Knorr... I'll take a look around.
If I want a polish flavor I get Adamba! You can't beat the flavor.
(I wish they did not put MSG in it, however)

Travel / TAXI FARE BETWEEN WARSAW AIRPORT AND OLD TOWN ? [16]

The owner of the hotel we are staying at said it would cost 50-60 for the both of us so 25 each makes sense.

Are taxis charging by the person they drive, or is the price the same for one, two or three? (puzzled)

OMG plk123, I guess we will need to move back to Poland and start sending packages to our deprived American friends and family.... Hehehehe.
What a flashback (that would be the day).

Life / "Children in Exile" - Polish documentary film about children who were taken to Siberia [5]

the kind assistance of the Russian people

Too bad "the kind assistance" always happened in the middle of the night and the chosen ones were sent on a month long , "luxurious" journey on the train to a remote resorts in Siberia, where a seven year old was expected to chop wood at minus 35C below...

The father of the documentary director was also kindly shot in Katyn.

Life / "Children in Exile" - Polish documentary film about children who were taken to Siberia [5]

I just came from seeing a Polish documentary film about children who were taken to Siberia and survived to tell their stories. The producer Chris Swider was present as well as one of "the children" Wesley (Wieslaw) Adamczyk. There was a discussion after the movie and we talked to Wesley, an elderly man now, of course. It was so very moving. The audience was in tears when he got to tell his story. We all know about monuments built for soldiers as war heroes, but what about the children...

I was impressed that most of the audience was American, there were African Americans, Mexicans and others, clearly not polish based on the accent, asking questions about the survival. This short movie was shown at many documentary festivals in different parts of the world.

If you have a chance to see it, do it.

Mar 27, 08, 17:36 Report #38

I can identify myself with this one. Totally. It was a lot of fun.

USA, Canada / New York trip suggestions [56]

Miranda, have a nice trip. NY is a beautiful city( minus the garbage bags on the streets). Every time I drove over Pulaski bridge and looked at the skyline of Manhattan, my hart was pounding, how beautiful the view was(is). Verezzano Bridge and Washington Bridge give you also a big thrill. You can just admire it, but the ride it too quick.

Manhattan has no back alleys to put garbage out. It gets smelly in the summer...
When I moved from NY to Chicago the U-Haul driver did not even understand the concept of a back alley as we have it in Chicago. He actually went with me to see how the back alley looks like and his comment was: "You could make another street out of this"... :). It was a residential area where I moved, but even the Chicago downtown has deliveries from "the back" - not the front of a store.

Take a walk in the midtown Manhattan. Your neck gets tired from looking up so high...it amazes me every time. The city was built long time and the technology could not be possibly as good as it is now, but the buildings stand tall and proud.

I visited the twin tower place the last time I was in NY (I think, about 4 years ago). The eerie feeling was still there.

Don't be afraid to hop on the subway. I rode it through different times of the day and night: Harlem, Bronx, Brooklyn, you name it...never felt unsafe. Waaay too many people on it at any time, most streets a buzzing with life at 1 am, 2 am... It was then, when i lived there and it is now. My sister lives there since 1982 and never had any uncomfortable incident in the city....

Hope it helps!

USA, Canada / how to get visa & work permit to work in USA [16]

It's about time the banks or other landing institutions screen potential buyers better. It was insane to promote and give huge loans with zero down payment. It just had to comeback and bite hard on the a** - both, the lander and the borrower. I hope the the crisis will eventually be resolved and most people can keep their homes. Personally, I don't know anybody affected by this, yet.

USA, Canada / how to get visa & work permit to work in USA [16]

Hay, as long as you can get a gallon of gas (about 4 litters) for the price of 16oz Java at Starbucks, you're OK. You can't walk 20/25 miles on 16oz of java. Can you? :) Some places in the world may have to work 2 or 3 hour to get a happy meal. I hope you can get 2, 3 or 4 of them for an hour of work...Ok, I'm speaking in commodities terms here. Hehehe.

USA, Canada / New York trip suggestions [56]

That was something unthinkable in late 80's.

I don't think so. I lived in NY between 1987 and 1990 (Gramercy Park 22nd and 3rd).
I rode many subways at 2 or 3 in the morning, coming from parties..work, or just visiting friends. I never felt threatened or unsafe, somewhat uneasy..maybe at times. I found NY very friendly then, abundant Hi's and hellos at any time during the day or night.

My sister lives there since 1982 (Gramercy Park) and wondering all over Manhattan - never a moment of scare.

News / Earth Hour - possible in Poland? [62]

Well Google got in on the act which gave me a bit of a shock this morning

Me too, I thought it was something wrong with my monitor. The Admins everywhere got some kind of color bug...

As to the one hour lights out - just another media hype to keep the little people busy. I don't agree with unplugging household appliances after every use. I do it however if I'm on vacation for 2 - 3 weeks. It's true that they use energy even when they are turned off, but it is minimal and not worthed the hassle.

Light energy is cheap, people don't care if the lights are left on in the bathroom for hours...
The solution: hitting in the packet always works best.

I see the biggest waste of energy and paper in office buildings. There is no need for all the lights to be on at night (some of the lights could be off during the day too, the sun is still bright enough). Not to mention the piles of paper resulting from unnecessary printing, it is outrages!

It would be better and safer to spend the money on street lights at night.

Food / A Polish Soup-What is the name? [16]

Its mostly a broth with mushrooms, onion (I think) and maybe sour cream?... We cut up Polish Sausage and hard boiled eggs and add it to the soup before we eat it.

Borsch is mostly traditional Easter or Christmas Eve soup. It is made different and served different however.
What you mentioned above it would be the one served at Easter, with chunks of sausage, eggs, bread, including small pieces of blessed food from the Easter basket. I just had it last Sunday! Yummm.
