Love / My Polish boyfriend and his drinking habit. [60]

Pawian, you don't appear to have won favour with your comments. I'm surprised they came from you.

Men and women alike will question you for those views.

Love / My Polish boyfriend and his drinking habit. [60]

So you are suggesting that I should beat up my fiancee, abuse her and somehow emerge a hero?

It worked in my parent's case but not in all.

Love songs are BS? Outlining their experiences. Let me guess, Catholic love songs are golden.

Pawian, you have a point but that's a nice ideology. A heavy drinker often presents insurmountable practical problems. You can't accuse Justy of sth that many people don't even know. Look at the songwriters and people who have wrestled with what true love is. Listen to Foreigner, I Want to Know What Love Is. Or 10cc, I'm Not In Love

Life / I loved Poland when I visited and I want to live there. [20]

We all have choices, Randal. Make it happen. Poland is ripe for the creative mind to carve out niches and opportunities.

The key is, as I see it, that it's not what you know but who you know. Those who leave for pastures new gain invaluable experience but re-integration involves set-up costs and a few strokes of luck.

Real Estate / Foreigners: Please don't buy Polish Land! [823]

This is an overriding theme in humanity, Randal. It's socialism when it suits us and capitalism as and when we can :(

Much must be left to decency which, regrettably, in in short supply these days :(

Buy the Polish land but use your discretion.

News / The most useless things in Poland [140]

For me, no. I just see the social reasons which determine actions. For any condemnation that can be issued, the fact remains that these people see limited options. Let's face it, who is just gonna assume a 15,000PLN a month job by walking into an office and demanding it?? Let's be realistic.

You can be rest assured that many Poles who left fought for what they wanted until they decided to leave. Poles want to live a Western lifestyle but few can pull it off. Unless people lie here, I am drawn to that conclusion.

Real Estate / Foreigners: Please don't buy Polish Land! [823]

Somebody made a good point about a hypothetical. Namely, a sea of Arabs flocking across and snapping up the prime cuts of land. Why deny industrious Poles the fruits of their labour? Yes, I see that many Poles are striving towards the nouveau-riche status but many fall short.

Foreigners benefit from systems which allow them to make quick bucks and scoop up land here.

Desolation and desperation, that's what! Why work hard for scant reward? It's not venting frustration, it's just realising that drink can allow you to feel good. You know, many Scots have it better than the Poles but still choose to take to drink or drugs. Life on the dole may cover their primitive needs.

Sorry, the thread is about Poland so I answered accordingly.

Food / Polish cake and pastry menu for coffee shop. [37]

That's not miodownik, no. I know it to see it. The missus is gonna be here in 10 mins with it. It has a yellow layer, with fake sugary stuff but very nice. Miodownik wipes the floor with that cake you posted.

Super thread, PD. Whetting appetites already.

I love miodownik. We may have sth similar in Scotland but I wouldn't know what to call it.

Donuts are always welcome, with rose jam.

Pastry with custard fillings :)

Babki is a standard Polish cake here. Nothing special but quite tasty and had with tea. I know Scots like it. It's sth akin to Madeira cake.

Oh, ajerkoniak is advocaat, PD. They put it in ice-cream here, scrumptious :)

Many Polish men are hard-working sorts and honourable. As I have said many times before, many idiots went abroad and just went wild. They work their asses off to get their vodka and good times. So be it, just don't let it drag you down.

Really, it's hard to select something but fliers come to mind. Many just throw them in the bin. If people really need a service of whatever description, in all likelihood they will hunt it down themselves.

Hey, don't knock alcohol too much. It's like a statement for some people. How would you feel (this is for foreigners) if you came through a highly competitive education system to learn that you'll get a pittance of a job? I had that, got an LLM but struggled with getting a good job. Poles have this MUCH worse than we do.

Anyway, cut back on those fliers and save the environment!

Love / I would love to meet a Polish woman..they are so attractive! [33]

Some women here will make your head turn back the other way to where it was before, trust me. Some women fly through money here. I keep saying it, there's a total lack of realism between what they think they have and what they spend.

Credit culture.

Real Estate / Foreigners: Please don't buy Polish Land! [823]

I can't say I love Polish people, just like I can't say I love any people completely. There are some I love here, absolute gems/diamonds, and others I'd sooner strangle.

Still, my fiancee is pushing me to buy some land here. That's more relevant. I'm considering it but will let her do the bulk of the negotiations. My Polish is pretty good but she knows the ropes.

He sounds like a narrow-minded neanderthal, kick him to the curb/kerb. A man who cannot respect that a woman has work commitments during the week isn't worth the time of day. Getting hammered and loose is sth to look forward to at the end of the week. Take the novelty away and you take the spice out of it.

I generally agree, Randal. However, it does depend on the courtesy shown to them by their Polish host/prospective seller. WB is right, moral integrity is important, rather than having sb 'kombinuje' to get ahead.

Hard to say. What I do know is that those interested in the property ladder can be pompous, 'awkward' assholes. They think they know the rules and start putting the squeeze on the landholder/landowner, trying to eke out the best bargain.

It's good that it's in the Polish national character to stand their ground.

News / Polish engineer beheaded in Pakistan. [347]

Well, foreign invasion has increased the level of support for such radical groups and I don't blame them for doing so. If you know the history of the Taliban before 9/11, you will know why they were angry. The US saw their actions as insubordination. If there were an onslaught on America, a war on their soil, I can guarantee you that if the fundamentalist Christians wielded power and had sway, people would get behind them too.

USA, Canada / Iranian moving to Poland from Canada. What to expect? [23]

Yeah but it's a relative thing, we seem to agree on that. In the Polish perception, there are many, relative to their virtual homogeneity. In a British sense, we wouldn't consider their level to be a s--load.

History / UPA - Ukrainian Insurgent Army. How they killed poles in Volhynia (1943). [139]

This was downright savagery on the Poles. Szpilman wrote about this in the Pianist. After being ravaged by Nazis, the Poles were happy to see some Ukrainians enter the fray. Little did they know how brutal they were, how sinister their motives were.

Prince is right according to what I've read. These people were vagabonds, ready to fight for the highest bidder. What business did they have in Warsaw anyway?

I agree with nrx, they are radical fanatics. However, I will also say that more people talk out against fundamentalist Christians in the Christian community than those Muslims who talk out against radical Muslims.

Lovinpolska is right, many Africans are here to study Medicine amongst other things. Many Vietnamese are here to sell in market stalls. There are many here in Gliwice but LOADS in Warsaw.

here's the Scottish position. We are unequivocally opposed to such a move, feeling it to be an infraction on civil liberties.

Check post 5 above, inkrakow. Wrocław posted a link. Not truthful in their marketing, I find that hard to believe why they'd risk that and lay themselves open to having a bad reputation.

I'm not sure. There may well be a branch in Chicago. It's quite a local name so you may be unlucky in your search. Still, good luck :)
