History / Poland war propaganda poster - can anyone explain this picture? [292]

that's what my british friend told me about english colonization scheme

It worked didn't it. Compared with the US model of:

"You will franchise your high streets to McDonalds and Starbucks"
"You will learn to love the NFL and NBA"
"You will make all women cheerleaders...."

it seems quite refershing

So, empire building was right for the Brits but wrong for everybody else?

No it was right for the English. If I mention Scotland and Panama and the Act of Union you would realise that Scotland weren't terribly good at the old empire building bit.

News / Will economic crisis hit Poland? [38]

In the worst secenario Poland is going to have 2-3% GDP incearse in 2009

I would be wary of scenarios painted on data less than a week old right now

News / Will economic crisis hit Poland? [38]

No country is an island in the global economic sea, well apart from North Korea maybe. The question for Poland would appear to be slow down or recession

Life / Where to do laundry in Krakow? [24]

Yeah, why do socks get lost one at a time

Spike Milligan had the same problem. They are all in the 'Lost Sock Mine of the Sahara'

News / Poles are coming home [35]

Just goes to show that not all UK journalists work for the Daily Fail. A nice article from the Telegraph

telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/poland/3248852/Polish-immigrants -leaving-Britain-What-the-Poles-did-for-us.html

And to prove further that good journalism is not dead, read this one from yesterday. Nothing to do with Poland, a lot to do with life. IMHO one of the finest pieces of writing I have ever read. I'm not ashamed that it moved me to tears.

Travel / Ostroda to Elblag Canal Trip [6]

So Szarlotka are you saying that it's quite common for this kind of trip to be taken over by large groups of drunken Poles?

I was saying that we've all had trips spolit by drunken yobs. My experiences of such days were not in Poland. Some in the UK, one notable nightmare on a boat trip in Greece and the trip from hell in a train in Siberia come to mind

Travel / a little help please, getting into poland without passport. [4]

I think that for EU citizens the requirement is either a passport or a national ID card (which we don't and hopefully never will, have) so I think you will be unlucky David. Best bet is to phone the Polish embassy or check their web site.

Travel / My trip to Poland - I hated Katowice, loved Krakow, and adored Bielsko [59]

Since we have a number of Coventry residents or ex-residents on this thread and since I am currently working there for at least two days each week for my sins, I would like to ask them a question.

Please give me the name of a pub in the city centre where I can get decent beer without getting a severe kicking or volleys of verbal abuse. I'm sure there must be some!
