Life / What Do Poles think of Finns? [50]

I'm not saying the right to bear arms is racially motivated as that didn't form the founding logic of that Constitutional provision. I merely wanted to say that there are mixed neighbourhoods living side-by-side and they feel safer with a weapon. I focussed more on its deterrent function.

I remember reading about those. Finland doesn't know racial tension like America does so you have to question why they need such firearms in the first place. They serve as a deterrent in America to would-be burglars or assailants.

Pick them off at random :)

Wikipedia isn't the definitive authority on such matters. They sometimes write sth and say 'citation needed'. That could just be inferential work on their part.

UK, Ireland / What is the british obsession with Polish workers [39]

Yet, to my knowledge, it hasn't been stamped out. I'm interested to know what the British government's contingency plan was in the event of a huge influx of immigrants. Their conjectural guesswork was well wide of the mark.

Well, we are neutral observers so perhaps more reliable, right? They are just labels anyway. I will staunchly defend the right to national identity. I wouldn't call a Finn Scandinavian, I'd call him a Finn. It's like sb calls me a Brit but I have no English blood at all, I'm a Scot.

Geez, I could use some of their Finlandia Cranberry :)

There are plenty of sources online which show that Finland can be considered as a part of Scandinavia. I'd be happy to show them. It just depends which classification you choose to give weight to.

Study / Profi-Lingua anyone? [14]

Aha, well, if John Lennon did it with peace leaflets then I can too ;) ;)

I'd just laugh Profi off these days. Their boss actually had the cheek to invite me to be a friend on one of those friends' networks. I swiftly declined. Those baboons are no friends of mine.

I found the whole agency thing a little discriminatory. You cannot set up agencies for select nationals at the expense of others. Agencies in Scotland can be used by any national looking for work within their spheres of competence. Poles have their own agencies and that's a little underhand.

They don't do so bad? They don't do well at all. Profi's accounting was terrible. They made a mess of my accounting so I sought the services of a professional.

Two words, mass immigration. Polish workers have been working in Scotland for many's a year, especially in the fishing ports. It's not a new phenomenon but mass immigration has come to be.

And that's why we assembled a united front and told them straight, start treating us better. Another irritating thing they did was not giving me enough information about how to do the student reports the first time. In Scotland, it is the case that we write such a report so that another person can read it (third party). For example, my school teacher wrote 'Sean is a diligent pupil' etc etc. It's the same with these reports, I wrote them with the thought in mind that a prospective employer could read them. Therefore I wrote 'Paweł is very focussed' etc. They wanted me to personalise them and that struck me as a little odd. I told them that we don't do it that way at home and they asked me to do them again. I refused as it took quite some time to wade through all those groups.

Also, their advertising gets on my wick. Those leaflet distributors get next to nothing for standing out in the cold all that time. The 2 schools which cheated me before were NOVA, or NO VAcation as we called them. Profit-Lingua too.

That's another stupid thing, you can't resign which may actually be illegal. I'll check up on that but you should have the right to resign. What if they suddenly u-turned (did one) or didn't honour their contract in some way, I wouldn't fancy going to a Polish court as who are they gonna favour? Do they still have the 10PLN cover rule? You have to find your own cover and pay for the calls you make to get sb. Yeah, they ask you to pay if you can't do a class. There was no room to be sick and that's probably the thing I remember the most. If some dic*head passed on the cold to me, what could I do? I was lucky in that I never took a sick day. There was another native speaker but he had his own groups and wasn't a replacement.

I've just re-read my contract and I remember that there was a fine of 30,000 for failing to meet the key obligations. That's quite a fine. 2000PLN was another fine thrown in there. They really are sharks and are nasty with almost all of their teachers.

I would disagree too but I did hear a Polish woman (my ex-neighbour) say that Finlandia is better than most Polish vodkas. I want to try a cranberry one. Wódka z zurawiną, nice!

I worked with them for 8 months and they are dodgy/shady. I've heard stories from so many other people and they are of ill repute. They are lazy and want you to do almost everything by way of administration. They lied to me that they had very few hours going and at a lower rate. They now have 3 natives so they are scum. Also, the observer was a bit*h. I told her where she could shove it as I wasn't interested in her comments.

Any other questions? The teachers themselves were really good.

Life / Problems for Dual Earner Families in Poland (and rest of EU) [19]

The problem is obviously one of change, getting used to the idea of men paying for fewer things based on the proportionality of earnings. Both have the right to work so I naturally support it. Some profitted and some didn't. It encourages pairwork but can lead to rows.

Morality is only really an issue if one of the two is a pimp. The family will get used to it, as long as they can devote enough time to their loved ones.

Unfortunately, life costs. I am being stung here so it is important, as much as I'd like to say that it isn't.

Children are so busy with schoolwork and the like. They will find things to occupy themselves with.

The problems can be overcome through discussion and finding out/respecting other peoples' time. Also, to lay emphasis on quality time when it does finally come around for those that are super busy.

Life / THE BRITISH ARE COMING!!! [30]

It's a bit like Poland in that respect, Harry. They claim to have the best of everything here and, boom, 1 million 'evacuate'. The thread makes out like Brits will flock in their droves. Maybe those rare few who don't want to retire in a beautiful and quaint British cottage. They might want to explore Kraków but many save up all their lives to retire in cosy surroundings at home. It also can't be said that many Brits will get jobs outwith teaching English. Some do, of course, but they are in the minority.

Language / A good learning book for Polish [44]

Michael Swan is a very good author. I used his book, English Grammar in Use, during my CELTA. He is clearly versatile.

Maybe the Polish chap got the wrong idea when sb told him, 'try swan' ;) ;)

History / History of the crime ; Bandera, UPA and Podole Polish land. [116]

Bating??? I wasn't bating at all. She said all those things in my 8pm class today. I was taken aback. She is a bit of an outsider and most, if not all, countries have them. Still, she has her take and she is Polish.

The Other, I know. I didn't take it as such :)

History / History of the crime ; Bandera, UPA and Podole Polish land. [116]

I was talking to my student, whose name will remain anonymous, and she told me that Poland got its comeuppance in WWII. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. She said that their assumed superiority really got exposed in 1939 and that they deserved it.

Poland talking about an empire isn't advisable. I dislike such imperialistic talk and us Brits know a little sth about it. Getting ideas above your station is only gonna result in failure.

Love / Why are Polish girls constantly ill? [166]

Polish people have a reputation for being rugged and tough so I can't fathom this lack of resilience. I put it down to self pity and attention seeking.

Food / POLISH BREAD..... isn't it great... [22]

It's eaten with bread there too. Just ask Crow, it's sth of a luxury drink in the Balkans, sth that you would bring out to host a VIP guest.
