News / Another Case Of Intentional HIV Infections in Poland [73]

If Catholics woke up to this reality, that contraception has its plusses, then there would be a move forward.

Is saying no counted as a from of contraception?

That guy is such a douche bag.

Certainly. He deserves to be tried for murder or at the very least causing death by negligence

Travel / ŁÓDZ..is it worth a visit? [25]

mmm. . . sounds just like Bermondsey to me

Lodz - the Bermondsey of Poland. Yes... that's good. Actually, does that make Bermondsey the Lodz of England?

If you like football hooligans, cheap beer, students and urban decay then Lodz is but a few hours from Warsaw.

There are also some old buildings and cemeteries

Study / University in Poland is too easy [68]

Where did you get that from? MLA has no hard rules about that.
The main thesis should be contained in the introduction.

Well I have lectured and studied in both Polish and British Universities. How about you?

They also seem to have very little studying to do outside of the lectures until few days before exams when you memorize everything.

Exactly my sentiment. University here serves little purpose other than to prepare the middle classes for a life of servitude to industrialists or husbands.

Essay and thesis are two very different beasts. A piece of work like that can have an actual postulate or two, or it can be simply a descriptions of current state of affairs in a given field or a fragment of the field of expertise.

Nevertheless, the title in an ACADEMIC essay should reflect that.

My thesis was entitled "The Symbolism of the Rose in Middle English Literature". That was the title.

ha ha ha! Priceless! Yes, I've seen a few titles like this too - the aim is usually nothing more than to fill 90 pages or whatever with writing.

University in Poland is sooo easy !! isn't it ?

There's not much of an academic tradition here. I translated a final year Masters essay title the other day and it was along the lines of "The HR tools used in modern businesses". Evaluation? Discussion? Analysis? Who knows? Who cares? The writer didn't and I get the impression the tutor didn't either.

News / Adult movie producers looking for 'actresses' in Poland or just a weirdo? [120]

Hardly! Sexual harassment is somebody constantly harrasses someone for sex.

Asking someone for a shag on film can hardly be considered sexual harassment.

Sorry, did you smoke a joint between writing those two sentences because they completely contradict one another.

where I come from we say "Shy bairns get nowt!"

Where's that? Last of the Summer wine?

It was also a warning to people that this sort of thing does happen in real life and not to take any stranger at 'face-value'.

Thanks for posting! It seems like an unlikely situation but one it seems does happen and covers a lot of questions about law and personal liberty.

how is it a hysical assualt asking questions or offering a job?

Read the post. If someone feels as if they are in danger of assault then it is assault. A man approaching a lone woman and asking intrusive questions about her sex life and trying to persuade her to make porn films would be considered very suspicious behaviour by any reasonable person and you know this damn well.

normally that kind of intervention only backfires and distance and hurt feelings develop. meddling in others' lives never works out. never.

Sorry, but what the Hell are you talking about?

no it doesn't and you'd be the one going to jail for assault.

Yes I would. but as the man was putting my wife in fear of physcial assault, it would be a form of assault on his part too.

hey, and if my aunt, cousin or sister or whomever wants to get into porn, then there is nothing i can or even should do about it.. that is their life and that is their choice. a trully loving person would just support them in their quest and be there if they need someone.. just like anything else.

Really? That kind of devotion tugs at my heartstrings, that you would be willing to stand by a loved one on the struggle to fulfill their heart's desire - working in the sex industry. That's beautiful, man

Are you an orthodox priest in disguise?

Paris, we both know that if you were working alone in a shop and a middle aged woman came up to you and started bugging you to make porn films with her then you'd be crying like a baby for your mummy to come and save you.

is it illegal to talk about sex?

Not if it's between two people who know each other and agree to talk about it. In this context (woman alone with a strange man who might become violent) it constitutes some form of abuse. If someone did that to my wife I'd be stamping his face into the tarmac

besides, there is nothing wrong with porn.

Find a sexual partner. Polaco

this happens all the time all over the world. there is nothing unique about this. and there are plenty willing participants

Then the willing participants can go to porn studios and sign themselves up rather than being press ganged at work.

Life / Internet cowboys in Poland - Internet Providers [15]

Yes - I think the Polish system leapfrogged a lot of technology to go from the old Strowger style exchanges to the modern digital ones. Lot of investment there.

TPSA is a French-owned monopolist wit NOT capable employees and a horrible attitude.

Whatever. They own the infrastructure and at the end of the day their techies have the most experience. I've been with them for 4 years and I've never had more than 6 hours downtime.

UK, Ireland / Are polish pupils harming native british childrens education? [280]

They're allowing parents to opt out of their responsbilities otherwise and I do also think that it is a massive burden on a child to have to deal with all of this.

They should be running around grazing their knees and being children and not having to manage all this extra stuff.

Indeed. A lot of people here forget that it's rarely the child who chooses to come to England. In the end the experience will probeably be beneficial but there'll be so much stress on the way, being relegated to class thickie for most of their lives...

Foreign children going to school for the first time should already know the same amount of English as other kids the same age. Any parent that allows it to be any different should be ashamed of themselves.

Teachers are not their to teach children English from scratch and printing leaflets in all kinds of languages is just allowing a daft situation to continue.

Well I do actually agre with this. Teachers have had more and more regulation and paperwork dropped on them over the last 20 years and I can imagine the last thing they (and the other pupils) need is for children speaking virtually no English to be dumped in the class.

Then again, maybe the teachers should stop whingeing and get on with doing a full day's work. They do enjoy pretty long paid holidays every year.

Travel / Just got back from a package holiday in Bulgaria with a load of Poles [7]

The older Poles wouldn't talk to anyone and lkept themselves to themselves - the rest of them were just generally noisy, pushy and racist - you know, Polish. The courier on the coach was the worst. Endless jokes and about gypsies, Bulgarians, blacks, English, Germans... I'm as broadminded as the next man but you have to draw the line somewhere.

If one of them had done something spectacular like chundered on a national monument or shagged the bus driver then that would have added some sort of grotesque fascination to the week but it was more like spending quality time with a gang of 14 year olds on a day trip to France (not something I've done since I was 14 by the way).

Life / Internet cowboys in Poland - Internet Providers [15]

2 years ago i signed a contract that states i must be provided with internet that has a speed of 2mbs.
I find it really rare when i am actually getting that.

That's the trouble with cowboys - they'll state a max speed but this might well decrease significantly when the system is clogged with other users. I pay a bit more and go with TPSA - I've been on Neostrada now for abou 4 years and never had any problems. They own the infrastructure and have the best personnel I guess.

UK, Ireland / What is in Poland that England doesn't have? [142]

whats there in Poland which is not present/found/felt in England.

PO

Nothing wrong with being proud of one's country but writing pseudo romanticised prose about the alleged "thrills" of a post communist country is pretty futile.

Not really. Look at Poland and you see a battered ex-communist country full of nasty old women. But look closer and you will see a battered ex-communist country full of nasty bitter old women. Look closer still however and you can see the remains of Poland's history and past glories. There are beautiful old cities and traditions kept alive by the local people for their own sake - not just by some nutters who have an axe to grind about other countries.
