History / The movie Defiance is a big lie (heroes that saved Poland suppored communism) [102]

Defiance is an entertainment not a factual documentary. Based on a "true story or true events" doesn't mean based the whole story or on all the facts and if anyone can't tell the difference they must be really intellectually challenged.

In Hollywood are the masters of playing the selective facts game. It is quite dishonest.

History / Why communism failed in Poland? [275]

Notice how I feel the need to XXXX out the boroughs name, this for a reason. Sad really, yes the country is PC mad PC ruined.

Good God. PC madness. Look what Liberals have wrought.

But there was no spite towards anybody because commies proclaimed "we're all brothers" and to some extent that worked.

Sounds like Obama today with his hollow calls for "unity" and "bipartisanship" which really means, "My way or STFU".

You should pay one cent every time you use the word Liberal :)

Lol... Guilty! Hey, it's not my fault they cause so many problems! Where shall I send all the pennies?

how everything the Soviets did they had a right, even if they had to make up a story

This is how our Liberals implement much of their agenda today. Most things they decide they want they manufacture a “right” in an attempt to justify it.

Liberals are modern Commies.

slavery, colonialism, Apartheid... all of it.

Liberals are the scolds who feel guilt about the past and try to make everyone share their guilt and shame.

off topic my fluffy bunnies

History / Why communism failed in Poland? [275]

I’m not into any Holocaust denial or any freako thing like that, but for someone to be sent to jail today for simply saying it didn’t happen back then, this is insane. That’s like kindergarten stuff, dictating what people can and cannot say because someone might get their fragile wittle feelings hurt. Political Correctness run amok.

Liberals need to STFU and let it all go. Holocaust, slavery, colonialism, Apartheid... all of it.

Any therapist worth their salt would tell them that assuming guilt and shame for events long ago which they had no part in -and even projecting that guilt and shame onto others- well, they’ve got a screw loose and it’s time for some serious psycho therapy and maybe meds. Lol…

what complete utter pc bollocks.

You can say that again. Why are some people so hung up on the distant past -that they had no part of- so as to feel guilt and shame today? Absurd.

News / Poland to make cuts amid gloomy economic forecasts [30]

A big part of the problem are labor union contracts which for years have been crafted and bullied through with blind disregard for economic realities.

Can unions really think that their absurdly generous contacts will be respected the same during these tough economic times as when things were good?
Here in the States they are demanding so called “no layoff” clauses. During these times? Gimme a break. They need to wake up to the reality of the current situation.

Every union contact should include language tying it to the fluctuating economy.

Spoken like a true Commie.

responsible and guilty of killing individualism.

Unionizing is the exact opposite of individualism.

who were transported for swearing an oath to form a trade union

They should be sent away. Bully labor unions have caused imeasurable harm to America.

For Marx, however, a society had to undergo capitalist development before it could arrive at socialism. It's interesting that his socio-historical insights are accurate in that regard

This is where America is now.

News / Poland..wake up to a multicultural world [1059]

The Polish here dont date much out of ethnicity, let alone race. Prejudice, and Proud!

Lol! Nothing wrong with a little nationalism when it comes to romance too.
Except, of course, I believe one Polish girl in particular should get with an American boy. ;)

News / How many prisons are there in Poland? [9]

Is it safe to walk the streets alone at nighttime? Can children go out to play alone and not return until supper and be safe?

Siberia always makes me think of Austrailia, in this respect, if you disbeyed the Russian commies you were sent to Sibera

This is a good comparison. Although while one has nice sandy beaches, the other has snow. Seems one was just for ridding people while the other was intended for punishment.

Rather than continuing to fill our prisons with the violent, anti-social scum, perhaps we need a new Siberia? Maybe Antarctica?

Work / New English 'teacher' in Poland (I have no qualifications). [119]

Depending on the teacher, it can sometimes be like an Us Vs Them scenario with normal monolingual natives (non-Poles). The students are relieved to know that their teacher speaks Polish but won't use it. It's a comfort zone and they feel that they will be understood better.

Yes, yes. For this reason also.

Matching personalities to their proper careers

And who hasn’t encountered someone working customer service whose personality and attitude were clearly not cut out for working with the public?

History / Why communism failed in Poland? [275]

So you think,it had better results in Czech Republic where people voted for communist party in 1948.

I don’t pretend to be an expert on this topic and certainly not about the Czechs. I only agreed with Trevek because he was right. And apart from Commieism being a failure of an ideology, that Poland didn’t ask for it nor want it is indeed why it failed in Poland while it has survived in other places. And this is the topic of this thread.

And let’s not forget that one should be fluent in Polish in order to teach English to Polanders.
There was some debate here about this requirement before, but I still do not believe one can be an effective teacher if they cannot communicate with and answer the questions of their students.

History / Why communism failed in Poland? [275]

I'd suggest part of the "problem" was that unlike places like Russia and Cuba, where there was a revolution, Poland didn't have a revolution. Inter-war Poland was not in the kind of situation which inspired revolutions as in Russia. It had Communism forced on it through conquest.

Very good point. Indeed, unlike others, the Polanders didn’t seek nor willfully embrace Communism.
This is why it failed in Poland.

Work / New English 'teacher' in Poland (I have no qualifications). [119]

Thank you, Seanus. :)

I wouldn’t want my words to deter anyone from pursuing their dreams and desires or exploring their talents. Rather, everyone should just keep in mind what they are fit to do, beyond just their personal motivations.

Some jobs, like teaching, are too important to be compromised by external interests. There is already enough of that.

Perhaps the person who started this thread will make a wonderful teacher? By what they wrote, it just seemed to me that their primary motive was their own income.

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

At any rate, do NOT go to Poland! Under any circumstances!
You simply don't have the linguistic or cultural or practical knowlege to do so safely.

Good thinking.

I wasn't writing about agressive bums (probably less dangerous in Poland than in many places) but about noticing the little things that mean an environment isn't safe. The kind of thing that Poles (and aware foreigners) take for granted (and IME less aware foreigners are ignorant of).

Also the way verbal warnings (and veiled and unveild threats) are given (and when someone is serious vs bluffing). Again I've known foreigners who completely miss and/or misinterpret communcation that's clear to Poles.

Very interesting.

Work / New English 'teacher' in Poland (I have no qualifications). [119]

The qualification isn't everything, there are teachers with qualifications who are poor teachers. My friends sister and her class have just put in a complaint about their English teacher because the woman is just not interested.

Right. I didn’t mean to deter anyone from doing what they want to do. I just know that in America many are hung up on the notion that 'all one needs to do is to want to do something and they can'. While this is a good attitude for the determined, it also leads to things like unfit or incompetent people holding positions they have no business in holding.

I personally know a girl who is terrible with her own kids –intolerant, impatient, easily annoyed, etc.- but for her job she is an elementary school teacher. When asked why about this seeming contradiction, her explanation is that she passed the schooling and she needs the income.

One can just imagine how the children in her class suffer to a degree for nothing more than her to fulfill her own personal desires. That’s not right.

So again I say, just because someone can do something, this doesn’t mean they should.
Seems to me there needs to be more emphasis put on matching personalities to the proper careers, rather than just what someone wants to do.

Edit:

I agree. If I ever tried to teach my lack of patience would have half the class dead within the hour.

Lol! I just wrote about this! :)

Just because someone themselves can do something doesn't mean they can teach it. Not everyone is cut out for teaching.
Best to step back and look at the big picture, beyond just your own financial needs.

I know dream on Lad

We all need dreams. It could happen.

closure.

An icky word most men avoid. But its value should not be underestimated.

I have a son and she adored him and he still asks for her. I was always careful in the past to avoid people getting close to him that would confuse him.....

Good man.

I would be over there like a shot.....just need that sign......

(sigh) I know how you feel, mate...
