Love / Soldier born in Poland / living in England. Fiance going away for ages. Complicated... [205]

Yes! Independence Day (from you Brits - hehehe) is just a wonderful day off for all Americans...cooking on the grill and having a great party with friends and family, going out of town, or just bum around.

I can't wait until the 4th of July to go to a wonderful party and admire fireworks from my friends backyard(complements of my tax money at work).

(good job shopgirl) :)

USA, Canada / Pole (Lukasz Zbylut) - the most wanted student in USA [11]

He can't be president; he wasn't born in the US.

Who knows...the liberal democrats can put an amendment in the Constitution. They seem to go with the flow, anything goes, as long as they get the vote, you know. Change, change, change....

Food / Polish Milk, Just not the same [54]

I had a milk from a "Ĺ‚aciaty" carton when in Poland, I used it with my coffee. I'm not sure what kind it was, but it did not change the taste of my coffee.I guess it was pretty close to the taste of milk as I know it. Yes, I know it. I used to drink milk straight from the milked cow on my aunts farm, or chilled, or turned into a sour milk...full of acidophilus and bifidus, both good for you :)

News / Thoughts on present day Lech Walesa [27]

Yes, I will read it and take it with a grain of salt. No need to be defensive. Some people will jump on accusatory wagon, but many will discard as simply trash.

News / Thoughts on present day Lech Walesa [27]

I heard recently that he is accused of collaborating with KGB in the seventies. I have a hard time to believe it, but who knows? Is just another plot to demean his role in the past?

Language / Polish Onomateopia [26]

Lol. The sound of an airplane compared with a butterfly...yeah...the sounds of nations. It amazes me anyway.

When i was going to school here, with just about any nationality present in the classroom, we exchanged this kind of sounds... and ideas. It was very funny. I don't remember now, but the dogs bark different in Japanese, Spanish or Arabic too! :)

Language / Polish Onomateopia [26]

Every nationality seems to hear the sound differently. Whether it is a dog; woof-woof or hau-hau, oink-oink or hrum-hrum, meow-meow or miau-miau...
The above is a good example of onomatopoeia as well, when delivered by a native speaker - it is priceless.

Travel / How to Go from Szczecin to Krakow? Drive?, Train?, Bus? Fly? [8]

Maybe we'll stop in Wroclaw for the night and break it into a two day trip

Do stay in Wroclaw, go to Rynek. You'll be amazed.

I don't have enough of courage to drive in Poland. I don't like the road signs and don't recognize some of them. Luckily, when I visit Poland, I never have to, so i don't.

It's nice to be driven or take a comfortable bus or a train... :)

News / What are your 10 fave things about Poland? And 10 least favourite? [130]

clothes horses

What's that?

I live in a small condo complex and I never saw any clothes on the balcony. People use only dryers.
Our by-laws however mention that we can hang cloths between certain hours of the day, but never after 6 p.m. I hang my dry cleaned work outfits (read suits) to "air them out" from the chemical smell, but I'd never do it with my regular laundry.

Love / Meaning of Friendship (my friends is going back to Poland) [57]

polishgrtx, I know what you feel. My friend, my confidante, spur of the moment companion (because she lived close by) is getting married and moving to Las Vegas. She is closing on the house at the end of June... He is here to help her move etc. Of course, I'm very happy for her. She wanted to be married again very much (third one!) :)

Sure we'll keep in touch with all the modern devices available, but it's not the same.

My other girlfriends don't live that close and meeting up needs to be planned. Oh, well, another chapter in life.

Life / Things to be afraid of in Poland? [109]

They charge me for ATM withdrawals, purchases, plus they apply some fee for currency exchange adjustment.

My bank (Chase) did not. I don't see any such charges on my statement from May, while on my European trip.
Also, My cell phone (complements to T-Mobil) worked just fine. A little bit more expensive, but priceless when needed.

News / Is Poland experiencing the same economic problems as is USA? [30]

People earning below a certain level, can always go there to get dry goods, cans of food etc., donated by community. They need to prove they actually live in the particular suburb.

Chicago has a huge food bank and distributes over 41 mil pounds of food a year.

News / Is Poland experiencing the same economic problems as is USA? [30]

Yeah, sure blame everything on the USA. It's the media (ours here and European) who love to tell scary tales and the public listens like sheep. Fear is the best way to put people in the submission. It worked for well known "leaders" in the world, didn't it? Now, the media is the leader.

Frankly, I don't see poverty in regards to my friends, coworkers, neighbors...parking lots at the malls are full, maybe people are buying less, but they are buying. We have a food bank in our suburb. We get flyer's or it's announced on local cable channel if it needs supplies and I did not see any recently.

The main stream channels do. Why?

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself". FDR.

Life / Things to be afraid of in Poland? [109]

Hmmm, so we have the scary colorful hair in Poland and even more so in Russia then. How about Czech women? Maybe Southern knows...Southern?... some expertise please. :)

On a sincere note, I don't think there is anything in Poland more scary than in any other country. You can get in trouble anywhere... wrong place, wrong time.

Life / Things to be afraid of in Poland? [109]

Old ladies...with very red hair. scarey..

lol. I actually did see a few recently. Red, orange...eeek. What's up with that?

What r the things you think I should be afraid of?

Beggars at every bus and train station can be pretty darn aggressive. Have some change in you packet to get rid of them. And, no matter what you do - don't light up a cigarette. You'll be surrounded by a few who will want one.

Language / The Dative Case [62]

Who on earth uses the ancient word "Ku" in Poland? Maybe some old people in a village and that's... maybe. Apparently it was very much used in Michal's household when he was growing up. Lil.

News / Is Poland experiencing the same economic problems as is USA? [30]

I prefer to spend my money in the US though.

I'm with you on this one. I did not like the prices in Poland (or France) for that matter. I hope we'll never get our prices that high here. We make much more money, most (if not all) goods and food are way cheaper, yet people are still whining. I can't even imagine what would happen if we'd have pay European prices - even with our salaries.

The only thing - If we could get the healthcare and dental services more affordable for all people...
