Life / Poles that have lived or live abroad are they different? [68]

Competition is fierce but the acquisition of English really improves their chances.

And the experienced they gained abroad in customer service, for an example.
You know yourself, some places here are run the same why they were during communism, sheer madness.

They learn that there is a world beyond FCE and CAE ;)

Is that an anagram of something? :)

Life / Poles that have lived or live abroad are they different? [68]

In my experience everybody changes when living abroad for an extended time. You are immersed in a different culture, and that usually has a very positive effect.

The boneheads we seem to get probably will end up in jail. Thats if they go home, if they dont, they will probably end up in jail here!

These two comments have to be put together as I am fairly sure RN has never left his Mum's basement, his posts say a lot about him.

In britain its not normal to share a room with anyone except your wife or G/F let alone 6 other people.

That is not the truth for a large part of the new immigrants to Britain.
Also a lot of people emigrated because of economic necessity and if the opportunities were available to them at home they would not have gone, making them home sick.

A lot of non-Polish people in Poland also complain too much for my liking.
But I think that people should make the best of what they have, I dislike moaners from any nationality.

Poles that have lived or live abroad are they different?
I have met a surprising amount of Poles who have returned to Poland from Ireland, as of late.
There is a marked difference in their attitudes and social skills (gift of the gabba :)

Life / Poland's westernization [44]

Indeed, we are and it puts us on the chopping board of many countries who are not as advanced as we are. Remember the nice discussions we had in the past about this.

Sorry it must have been during one of my black outs, any links?
But you are correct, Holland does get a beating instead of being used as a model.

the Poles seem to take the greatest common divisor and try to make it theirs as well.

Are you talking about all those silly TV programs like the X factor, (enter country) has talent etc?
I think that is just TV culture, kinda like this forum being internet culture and there are certain expectations e.g. we will never all agree ;)

but most of the Poles who adopt this are ignoring the cultural differences of the diverse countries in the West.

I think the same could be said for people in the West talking about the East.
It was only 20 years ago when the old iron curtain was up and we were in an arms race.

had chicken Kiev, which wasn't chicken Kiev at all; when do they learn how to cook in our canteen?)

When they learn Kiev is not in Poland ;p

Does Poland hate the western culture? It depends. The simple folk, as I imagine all simple folk in the world, love the consumptionist way of life. After all, this was what they dreamed about and couldn’t get during the commie times. A new TV set, cable TV, a new car and some vacations somewhere nice from time to time. The intelligentsia is somewhat more critical towards consumptionism, preaching the impotance of some higher values and all. Is this that different from wherever you are?

Good post.

Life / Poland's westernization [44]

There might be not common political views between england and Holland, but there some common grounds like in Human rights, inmigration policies, rights of women, etc. which to some countries of the east block was asked to join the EU, before that they did not have them.

What makes you say that?

does Poland hates the western culture even though they use it and adapt it to themselves? Or is it just a double faced statement and its fashionable to hate the western culture?

I think you are confusing the communist regime with a culture.

Holland

Also I think Holland is far a head of the rest of Europe on many social and legal issues.

Language / How does Polish sound to you? How to make Polish sound more pleasurable? [100]

How do you perceive Polish? What is unpleasant, what is pleasant?

The Polish language sounds like leaves rustling, with all the shh sounds.
I like Autumn and i like the sound of the Polish language :)

So Polish does not sound like Russian?

Russian Is a more hard and abrupt language.
Even before when I could not speak Polish, it sounded like a weird mix of "an eastern European language", French and Italian.
I do not speak French or Italian.

Mainly in the forest.
It is the season now and I see many people picking them.
I don't know how much you know about mushrooms but many are poisonous and you must know what to pick.

Travel / Zakopane in April [7]

can be quite chilly with rain or even snow

That is a fair point, if it is a particularly long winter, there can indeed be snow.
And coming from winter to spring is not as accurate as we would like to believe some times.
But for the most part you should be okay for April in this neck of the woods.
I live in Myslenice and it is very beautiful around here.

Travel / Zakopane in April [7]

Hello mateinone,

1) How hilly is the ride from Myślenice -> Zakopane and for what portion (ie just the last 10kms or the entire 60kms)

It is mountainous, the difficulty with answering a question like that is, I don't know what you are used to.
Myslenice is in the Beskid mountains, they are great for cycling and the closer you get to the Tatras the more mountainous it becomes.
I will put it another way, you'll be able to cycle it, it is very beautiful too.

2) What sort of weather can I expect? Obviously if it was still snowing I would have to call it off, but the last time I was in Krakow in April the weather was gorgeous, just wondering if that was an exception to the rule, or April is usually nice?

yes, it'll be good for cycling, as mid summer is too hot for comfort.

I would recommend cycling to Myslenice and going on one of the many bike routes through the forest and over the mountains to Zakopane.
There are trekking huts where you can stay the night along the way.
The motorway would not be as nice as going through the mountains but I would give myself 3 days for that.

Let me know if there is any further information you would like.

UK, Ireland / "Angry swan eater" - The British media view of Polish immigrants? [63]

pull up all the stories of animal cruelty in the UK and Ireland since 2004.

Sure we should have put RN to sleep, it would be the humane thing to do.

"Angry swan eater" - The British media view of Polish immigrants?

What is it with swans? a lot of people eat chicken, pig and cow.
Did a very clever swan trick you all in to believeing there was something more special about them than a chicken?

Life / HORSE SHOES....which way up do they go in Poland ...? [17]

In Ireland we have it this way U.

Traditions do differ on this point, though. In some cultures, the horseshoe is hung points down (so the luck pours onto you); in others, it is hung points up (so the luck doesn't fall out);

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe#Folklore

But I have only ever seen it this way n in Poland..... so I don't know.

Law / The new Law in acquisation of Polish citizenship in 2009 [15]

How do you figure that?

Bringing in a mandatory basic language skill helps with integration.
It is amazing how many foreigners live here who can only order beers in Polish.
I think it would be a fair expectancy for all countries.
Of course it might be a little tricky with a country like Belgium, which has three official languages but Poland doesn't.
I would not expect the language skill to be excellent for the exam but basic.

It was depressing how many Poles in London did not have a word of English and could not find work or were abused by Polish employees because they were helpless.

Love / Broken Heart, An amazing girl from Poland [139]

I am south of Krakow, up the Beskid mountains.
It's where the chilled cats hang and this tiger is feelin a bit cold, so I am moving back to Krakow soon.
I am an Irish feline but I dig the Polish cats :)

It was their answer to pierogi.

It was dripping in fat

Ah it is terrible stuff, unless you are hungry and it is minus 29 outside, that did happen.
and you are right, it is still nothing to write home about.
Those cats eat pig's ears.

Language / Need help with a Polish nursery rhyme about a spider. [7]

Is anyone familiar with a Polish nursery rhyme or poem that begins:

I have to point out the obvious and bring to your attention that that poem or nursery rhyme is in English not Polish.
What makes you think the author is Polish?

Edit* by Floella Benjamin (Author)

I just googled a small section of the poem.

UK, Ireland / England, Dirty, Expensive and a dangerous place to live? [205]

i was pointing out the reality that nobody would wish to suffer because of what happened 100+ years ago, thats just stupid and would only result in the world standing still instead of learning from its mistakes and moving on.
We know it was wrong but then every country has done bad things at some point in history.

And i was pointing out that if you don't wish to suffer because of what happened 100+ years ago, why do you choose that user name?
