Real Estate / Foreigners: Please don't buy Polish Land! [823]

Lose what?

Incoms from tariffs, right to own trade policy (Russians banned export of Polish meat and we can't ban anything from Russia without permission from Brussel and they don't give a damn) protection of own market, which is best seen on the real estate market even thought there are still some limits, a part of soverginity in general - for example some Greek guy tells us in which place on our own land we can build roads, we had to accept thousands of usually stupid rules, for example about the size of potatoes and I'm sure that one could find many other negative aspects.

im talking about the EU making poland better economically one grant at a time (like it did for Ireland and Portugal etc

Ireland and Portugal. Very good examples. Portugal is a poor country despite many years in EU. That's because vast majority of things in economy depend on the national government's and first of all on people, who are working in these countries. Membership in EU for poor countries has more posive than negative aspects, but It creates opportunities, not make anything better by itself.

UK, Ireland / Integration with our new Polish neighbours in Ireland [12]

I Live in Dublin and I was recently told that the unofficial number of Poles in this country is 400,000.

And that's good. We should forget about UK and concentrate on Ireland.

you cannot be serious!! how much money has the EU just given to Poland in the last two years???

Bla Bla Bla...

We get some things, but lose others... I wouldn't say that we are treated unfair, but membership in EU for Poland is not such paradise as some seem to believe.

Life / Polish denial of reality - is it a national trade? [117]

why does noone say how japanese are rascic or korean?

Because they are non-white and looks like for the media only whites can be racists. When skinheads beat some blacks It's a big news, but when non-whites attack white people noone cares.

im saying her posts were very racist and nazi-istic.

Which posts ?

Real Estate / Buying a plot and building a house in Poland? [26]

Are we being unrealistic if we thought that we could live on the income of a small guest house. Or would we need other incomes?

You would need something quite big and that would be expensive and risky. But you may just add 3-4 more small bedrooms to a normal house, that should give not bad extra income, however you need something close to the see.

Life / Polish denial of reality - is it a national trade? [117]

I, however want to concentrate on the denial that Poland is in a good situation

Poland is definately not a rich country, but It's definately not very bad and is getting better. Besides I think that we all know that Poland isn't rich, so what's the point of writing about that again again ? Does It turn somebody on ?

Daf, haven't you figured that out yet ? For most of Poles a person, who is not complaing 20 times a day is weired. In America when people say "What's up?" you should answer: great, fantastic or at least OK. In Poland you should say that It's tragic, otherwise people will think that you are on drugs or something.

Life / Moving a family to Poland, any info, advice needed [51]

Can a person really accumulate as many students as needed to actually be able to support oneself just from private lessons, translations, etc?

Rather not. If you want to teach English, first of all you should find a private language school.

Genealogy / When did Poles adopt surnames? [27]

I believe it was in the Middle Ages

But many peasants didn't have surnames until 19th century.

Genealogy / Ethnicity in Poland [17]

...

Sure, but for so many people I wouldn't say that as a minority they are very active. How many Poles even know that we have a large Ukrainian minority ?

Also that there are Poles with Muslim roots

Tatars. Just a few thousand of them.

Real Estate / Buying a plot and building a house in Poland? [26]

Maybe in the future Poles will go abroad for holidays - not the Baltic.

Many are already going abroad, but the Baltic will alway be popular, the only problem is that the tourist season is rather short.

It is a difficult decision, the prices are going up all the time

That's true, but they are already high and no one will convince me that they are going to reach the British level, because there are no rational reasons for that. In the future they should either grow slower or the whole market will simply collapse at some time - just what happens sometimes on the stock market.

we pay more than we can afford for a small plot in a popular area or buy a large plat in a "normal village".

Hard to say, but If you buy something close to the see, you may try to open some turistic business in the future, It doesn't have to be 50m away from the beach, but 20km is definately too far away for that.

In case of building a house my (not really proffesional) opinion is - definately not right now - there's a real boom on the market and companies often don't really care about consumers, but more companies is investing in construction and government soon should let import foreign workers.

Where are you now Gregorz

I'm in Poland :)

Do you know the area? Anything we should look out for?

I lived in Koszalin for short time, but don't really know these rural areas around. If you want to build a house, some would say that you should do that as fast as possible, because prices are growing, but I would suggest to wait a year or two until the market becomes more stabilized.
