News / Polish-German Relations in the Present [697]

Secondly, since when are the poles responsible for the shifting of the boundaries after the WWII? Silly me, I always thought that it was Stalin’s and Roosevelt’s job.

And here I always thought it was Poles who forcefully drove the Germans out....neither Stalin or Roosevelt...silly me!

Imagine a bully that picks on everyone, and after he gets beaten up for it he demands from people compassion for his miserable and unfair fate. What a laugh. :)

Neither were the victims of the bombings or the expellings the bullies but rather women and children nor would I ever demand from you to mourn OUR deads....we Germans are quite capable of that alone, thank you!

The German self-pity is abhorrent indeed.

For self-pity NOBODY can hold a torch to you Poles....even after 60 years you are still full of it and even try to use it internationally to your advantage...:)

PS: And for the whole "Who started it" - thingy....why not get some years back?
Without the injustices done through the Treaty of Versailles which included stealing german territories full with Germans and gifting it to other countries (like Poland) Hitler would never had become chancellor but stayed a painter (failed or otherwise).

But he promised the Germans to make things right again and they believed him...

what we didnt do was round women and children up and gas them.

No need to....during and after such bombings people just got burned like in ovens...

In fact it was by far the most ineffective strategy to follow.Bombing civilians created supporters for Hitler.German army production remained the same and later grew up.

I know...

So you guys are arguing about ethics and who is guilty of warcrimes?

Isn't it interesting Shopgirl that for many there are two kinds of victims? The good (Jews, Poles, etc.) who are demand tears and compassion and the bad ones (Germans)...who are not really victims and don't deserve any feelings at all???

No tears for them!

But beware if Germans mourn their own dead....then they try to "re-write" history and that should NOT be allowed!!!!

So that shows you that the English had some compassion and new right from wrong, its unfortunate that Hitler didnt.

Rather Churchill did have the foresight to see it wouldn't look good for the conduct of the allies....and he was right till today it's a "black spot"...worthy of everything the Germans did!

Do you really want to compare the "London Blitz" with...say...Hamburg....Cologne....Dresden???

All Brits are aware of what happened and also aware of the other camps like Belzec, Sobibór and Treblinka, Aushwits was just one of many.

No....seemingly they are NOT! :)

We are going to scourge the Third Reich from end to end. We are bombing Germany city by city and ever more terribly in order to make it impossible for her to go in with the war. That is our object, and we shall pursue it relentlessly.

Exactly!

Did you know that this policy was not against Nazis but against the german people? The women and children? To kill as many as possible? A war crime!

Even Churchill himself got qualms after Dresden and ordered Harris to stop:

Any compassion with the victims???

Respect should be shown to the dead, regardless of sides. To me it is humane response to someone's loss.

That's nice of you shopgirl but highly idealistic....like in not realistic!

In GB for many is Bomber-Harris still a hero...and his policy killed hundreds of thousands of german civilians...or even the forced expelling of the millions of Germans who had to flee the eastern territories (2 Millions died on this treck of misery)...did you ever hear a "I'm sorry" from the Poles???

PS: Did you know that more german refugees starved to death, froze, got murdered (2 Mill) than Jews died at Auschwitz (1,6 Mill)?
WHERE ARE YOUR TEARS???

I think for young people to say they are just not interested, is an insult to the memory of all the people who died.

I doubt that all the died people will feel insulted...I read a BBC poll (in the wake of the 60. anniversary of the liberation) that showed that nearly a half of the Brits didn't know about Auschwitz at all!

Lot's of people are not interested...no need to feel insulted!

hnn.us/articles/1732.html

Here you will find even more evidence that history and the knowledge about important events shouldn't be token as granted...

No, and to be honest I really dont care, they weren't that good since they were defeated and also they were a disgrace to the armed forces, they executed POWs and to me they were just cowards!

Now....how weak would then have been the allies???
They needed full fecking 6 years and their combined powers to wear down little Germany! :)
(Oh and all of them executed POW's if it did fit them)
And I don't think that fighting continously outmanned against enemies who had so much more men and material counts in objective eyes as "cowardly"....but that's another topic!

agreed, but someone should have taught them how to show some

They should have told them before then....how to react "properly"...

Well they should show some interest!

Why???

And if they show it just to please you would it make you feel better???

*can still be blown off...the danger is not over yet* :)

A little bit awkward way to great guests

It is rather awkward and I wouldn't be surprised if the behaviour of the Germans was a rude answer to this awkward behaviour of the hosts....

Just a question:

Did you ask those Germans if they wanted to go to the camp?
Were they at least a tiny bit interested?
Or was it more like: "They are Germans so we show them the camp! They HAVE to be interested!"
Did you expect a feeling like after pushing a "emotions-button"???

I have to agree....visits to such a camp is at least once compulsory to a german school class and I remember mine...and we were bored too (and to onlookers surely rude too).

But it wasn't because of lack of compassion or hate of jews or such...kids that age get bored easily...they make fun of museums visits too...

It's no bad intention...but these visits are compulsory....a duty...and as such they are seen by the teachers and the kids...

I think it's a wrong way to handle that because it accomplishes nothing (with most kids anyway) but still....it's an ordered duty so every year another class goes visiting ...*shrug*

News / What do you think about what the Kaczynskis say about Germans ? [90]

re: Kacyzinski

- Actually, the name spells: Kaczynski. The Germans have the habit of purposely misspelling Polish names (out of the racist conviction: 'Polish is not a real human language'). Should we misspell German names for fun? If we do it consistently, folks will start laughing at them eventually too.

NOT purposely! Promise!
It's just....polish is hard for Germans...we desperatedly miss the vowels...:)

re: elfin-featured

- That's name-calling, isn't it? Coming from a German hack and repeated with gusto by a German feller (i.e. Butty).

Should we similarly depict the facial features of German politicians? E.g. Frau Mekerel (instead of Merkel) as piggy-faced?

What's wrong with elfin-faced? :)

I wonder how would the Germans take it? So far, they have been enraged by the cover of the Polish weekly Wprost, showing a humorous pic of Frau Merkel with, actually, the Kaczynskis. (Which seems to corroborate the stereotype that the Germans are bereft of any sense of humour. Also compared to us, Poles.

Right now YOU are reacting quite humourless and always accusing the Germans of the worst possible intentions (look at your posts)!

WHY DOES IT ALWAYS NEED TO BE AN INTENTIONAL AFFRONT WITH UNDERLYING RACISM????

After all, nobody that I know of in Poland objected to the humorous representation of the Kaczynskis on the aforementioned cover.) Of course, when some time ago a German periodical had on its cover President Kaczynski with a potato instead of head and some Poles objected to it, the German politicians retorted with the air of intellectual superiority that Poles should know what 'satire' is.

Yes...another sign of polish humour....demanding from the government in Berlin to punish the authors and forbid this pic! How funny! :)

I hope this give to certain folks scribbling in this thread some food for thought as to whether the Germans are really as amicable towards and safe to us as these folks have been implying.

By the way, Frasu Merkel herself has showed class; she suggested to a German hack, who asked her about the Wprost caricature, that the Polish hacks have the right to freedom of expression.

Exactly what Poland didn't do!

PS: I remember at least TWO events (Media markt ad, Harald Schmidt Late Night Show)
where Poles reacted VERY miffed about jokes and DEMANDED to cut it...what also happened....you are sooooo understanding and humorfull!

Can you show me some tries of the german gov where it demanded from the Poles to cut those anti-german pics or jokes or whatever?

Who has more humour, huh?

News / What do you think about what the Kaczynskis say about Germans ? [90]

Well, if you back the Kaczynskis's weighing votes system, and you don't back the one preferred by the Germans, then don't you agree with the Kaczynskis that the system preferred by the Germans is very disadvantageous for Poland? Wouldn't you agree that if the system favoured by the Germans were in place, then Poland would be in danger of not having any significant political power as regards her her own affairs?

The overwhelming majority of the EU-members agreed to the new voting system but still a minority of 4 countries led by Poland (Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania and Slovakia) tried to make this agreement impossible...not very democratic against all those 24 countries which favoured the agreement at all, wouldn't you agree?

Also, don't you think that the German financial claims pertaining to the former German territories are dangerous to Poland?

Even if that came to pass...Germany is paying compensation for decades now and it was never "a danger" for Germany!

News / What do you think about what the Kaczynskis say about Germans ? [90]

- So the Kaczynskis have allegedly said that today Germany is the same as Hitler's Germany? When and where did they allegedly say so? Can you give the pertinent quote?

I think I can help out with that:
Polish Prime Minister: 'Something Very Negative' Happening in Germany

In a radio interview, Poland's prime minister issues an ominous warning about Berlin, implying that contemprorary Germany is comparable to the time that saw Adolf Hitler rise to power.

spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,490994,00.html

"...The elfin-featured prime minister apparently feels "something very negative" is happening in Germany. In a Tuesday radio interview quoted by AFP, Kacyzinski added: "Like an era which has already passed, the large majority of Europeans didn't have the courage to talk about it, it is the same today."..."

What most Germans think about that:

"...But some observers see different motivations coming from the Kaczynskis, including the editorial writers at the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper, who note: "All the prime minister cares about with his venomous and bile-filled attacks against Germany ... is to help shore up his diminishing popularity in Poland."..."

saying that in German schools they should teach Polish, funded by the German taxpayer.

Did she give a reasoning? :)

Reminds me about Kielce...or was that Jedwabne?
Anyway...you Poles had a statue there for decades, remembering the victims, only on this statue the murderer were the Germans...only recently after Gross book it was changed.

Or Katyn....for decades it was said it was the Germans not the Russians...

Who knows what else will be found out!

Night!

I will be in Germany next week (simply driving through to more civilised places).
Always annoys me how such a nice place can be inhabited by people like you

No really!

I wonder how Germany will survive your disappointment!
It will be hard but somehow we must go on...
*snif*

PS: Just think that there are plans to make one obligatory history curriculum for the whole EU. It’s going to be very interesting. :)

Yeah...imagine Poles forced to confront their own dark spots...now how they will scream!!!
