Love / Are Polish men generally possessive? [51]

It was probably your boyfriend excuse but he was right at the same time that in polish culture married women are not supposed to go out alone and rather would go out with other married women if ever.

Many would brake that rule of course.
I don't know about "romantic nature of Polish men" but I understand why you would like the manners.
My ex girlfriend - who was N. American - told me once that we (Poles) were able to be "closer" and were genrelay into relationship but this could be American- Eruopean issue imo.

Work / American in need of a job in Lublin [32]

valmoe,
If you have no teaching experience a school job might be too tough to handle perhaps but I think any native speaker would do fine doing "conversation classes". I'm sure if you advertise in Lublin local pappers you'd get enough responses to make some good cash. Native speakers are in demand for this type of service and you could get 40-60 PLN per hour doing it. Avoid beginning and intermidiate level students since unless you know how to teach English grammar you won't be able to help.

Good luck anyway.

Life / Moving to Zakopane [18]

I'm up north, by the sea and I heat my place november-march, that is my landlord does. The rent doesn't change though in winter and I pay for heating 50 Euros each month, summer or winter. No dentist takes more then 60 PLN for filling your tooth, I don't know root canal or some extra procedures but I have never paid more then that. It's cheaper when you use insurance (about 25-35 PLN) I think.

Life / Moving to Zakopane [18]

To give you some idea: my electric bill ( single guy, 1 bedroom, fridge, TVset, computer, stereo ) is about 10 Euro/month and I pay about the same for gas (heat, cooking); telephone monthly is about 10 Euro/month flat rate, internet 12, cable tv 10, health insurance paid by your employee would run about 200 Euro/month, don't know about car insurance, doctor or dentist private visit would cost about 15 Euros, don't know about wood but for a small house heating in winter my friends spend - they say- about 125 Euros/month.

Travel / Italy - Poland travel [9]

Poland, Switzerland, UK, Ireland are not in Schengen zone so entering those countries you would need to show ID or passport OR if you are not from Europe you'd be asked for a valid visa.

Poland joins Schengen zone in about a year from now.
If you have some type of "residency permit" for Schengen zone it is valid for traveling within Schengen countries only I think.

What is Schengen agreement?
It's an agreement to not check passports when crossing internal borders of member countries.

Life / Well-educated Polish modern slaves abroad [35]

If that type of money gain was possible for citizens of 1st world they would go into "slavery" themselves. If you happen to be 1st world citizen ask yourself would it be tempting to work temporarily in other country and make 10 times as much? For many it is tempting.

History / We were Kings of Poland [10]

Stanislaw August Poniatowski was the last King (1764-1795) of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. :)

UK, Ireland / Polish Ekstraklasa games in Manchester [4]

IMHO polish fans would watch only "their" club play so your numbers in pub wouldn't be great overall. If you want to get Poles from all over Poland into your bar serve them speedway from Poland. I'm serious! Look into it. :)

OR figure where from is the majority of Poles in your area and show them only Wisla Krakow games or Legia Warszawa or some other club they would be into watching.

Genealogy / How common is the Matuszewski name [21]

There was somebody in your family whose name was Peter or Piotr. Since the name of St. Peter was popular to have in that area and simply there were too many sons of different Peters to figure who was who some were given names Piotrowski, Piotrkowski, Pietras and Petrowroski or Pietrowski. The name was given usually by a priest who was the only one who could write into parish books (books of births, books of married, books of dead) The data was later used by state administration to create its own database for military conscript, taxes, IDs, etc.

Life / Poles Abroad - leaving the country for various reasons [20]

I have never had any regrets for leaving US for Poland. It was very hard decision to make but I consider it one of the best decisions I have EVER made (quit smoking was another one). It took me years to adjust back into polish way of life but those first years were a blast. I had so much fun just riding PKS here and there, watching 2nd division soccer, observing aspects of polish culture etc. I am still nostalgic about US, some places, friends I left behind but don't go there anymore and fulfiill my traveling needs within Europe.

Milosz said that loneliyness was charachteristic to living in US. To the list of disadvanteges I would add conumerism, sick work ethics ( stealing time? haha) and brainwashing media...

I would never probably have enough courage to leave my comfortable US trap if it wasn't for my mother illness that required my involvement in care.

yes Gadu Gadu is totally free and is an instant messaging service like MSN or Yahoo

TLEN is another and IMO a better instant messaging service that is popular in Poland. Its server is more stable and you can talk to Gadu Gadu people through it as well.

Law / It's Official: Poland Takes Silver regarding Investment Abroad [44]

Poland needs more artists and more popular understanding of legal system we live in.
Avarage guy from KO£O dreams only about moving to KUTNO and the one from KUTNO dreams about living one day in POZNAŃ - it's kind of sad how low many aim.

Many real estate prices are unreal. They ask for prices as if they were not intrested if the property is to be sold or not and to me it looks rather like waiting for a fool to buy. Often people still live in the property they offer for sale so it's a bit like asking for $1 000 for your own shirt. If you find a fool you'll take it off and sell it.

I understand Romania but Poland? We are CLOSED here for 9 months and we all were lucky recently with that type of summers we had. For weather reasons Portugal and Romania should top Poland it terms of estate atraction. Property at Baltic may look very cool in summer but go there in March or September and you'd see as Polse say "dogs barking with their asses" psy dupami szczekają.

Both examples are correct and in use. The second one could be anounced to be proper polish by people from Warsaw.

News / Polish government punishes charitable givers [25]

I talked with many homeless in NYC and 80% of them have told me the same story about constantly being turned down for work and they ed up giving up.

I find it hard to believe. ... I met illigal Mexican guy same years ago who crossed into US without a penny and for two months was living in homless shelters on West Coast and he used free food kitchens etc. He told me that US "back up" system was fairly good to him and those who would like to get out from shelters, get job and change way of life could do it. He said he was given phone cards, phone number were possible imployees could call him back (very important), CV help, refrences help, support in finding housing, etc. All the social workers he claimed were willing to help him and did help him. He said there were very few people in shelter willing to get out and it was him and just few other who wanted the change and help. Majority were able to complain but not able to use available resources.

When I was talking to him he was happily employed as bike mechanic in bike shop working on fake pappers. My point is: if you want to leave the street you get help! 80 % are NOT turned down for jobs constantly, they hardly want to change their situation.
