Yes, I do this with my teacher too.
Here is a good website if you want to practice this without a teacher (from chapter 13 onwards)...

You can listen to the mp3s and try to transcribe them. You will need someone to check them for you though....

I have done. The trouble is... some people (including myself) start off with the best of intentions and make initial contact then don't follow it up. There are a lot of Poles on that site and relatively few English people wanting to learn Polish.

Gumtree is probably better in terms of quality of contacts (sharedtalk has a chatroom facility if you just want to drop in). I've made a few local contacts and also speak to a few people in Poland via Skype.

Yes, it's pretty good - there are also some very concise explanations of cases which are well worth reading.

I find it too distracting. Us men can't multitask...
If you search youtube for napisy, you should come up with some subtitled material

I find that all this learning can get a bit tiresome. I like to watch DVDs with Polish soundtracks/subtitles. Passive learning. Have a look through your dvd collection you may well find that some of your films have Polish subtitles.

I have had a similar experience. I put it down to my age!
I have to hear words five or six times before they stick in my brain. The action of writing things down helps you to remember things too...

Tell me it's going to get better and all fall into place....

It WILL get better and it WILL fall into place (so long as you don't give up first!)

if it's at the end of the word more like "sh", eg talerz and some other circumstances...

Language / Recommend a text book for learning Polish... [10]

I can recommend "Basic Polish" (A Grammar and Workbook) by Dana Bielec. I bought this ages ago and I've just gone back to it, ideal for refreshing your memory of all those Polish lessons. It covers all the cases in bite-sized chunks. Complete with test exercises and answers. This book doesn't really cover many verbs so I would also recommend "301 Polish Verbs"

I thought that rz=ż which is the (usually voiced) equivalent of sz

sz, does this combination exist in english?
ż is more like pleasure, except when devoiced of course

rz is pronounced like sz after p

I think they are being a bit lazy saying this, rz sounds more like sh when at the end of the word.

maybe with a tiny bit of ż in it??

Rz doesn't equal sz
Rz is always voiced and can never be devoiced

are you sure? it does sometimes i think (i'm not quite sure what devoiced means)
what about words such a pantoflarz /talerz where it's at the end of the word

Interesting example, in films he normally says "The name's Bond, James Bond"
I was wondering whether sometimes the use of "Jestem" was the subtitlers being lazy/economical with words.

On several occasions I have heard/read the word "Jestem" used when someone is saying their name instead of the usual Nazywam się / Mam na imię.

When is it ok to do this? If it's a nickname etc... or a positive affirmation/correction of your name?
