Language / Praca vs robota [16]

Robota may refer to a "task" as in "Mam robotę do zrobienia". But usually they are interchangeable. It's an informal word.

Life / POLISH HOSPITALITY STILL ALIVE AND WELL? [17]

I wonder if there might be a notion of "foreign guests" and a thought "Oh we have to show them how we dine in Poland!!" bringing out the artillery to the table ; )

Life / POLISH HOSPITALITY STILL ALIVE AND WELL? [17]

Hmm, well, I can only add that half of my family died on tuberculosis during WW2 or just after it because of great starvation during that times, and my grandparents and probably many other people become prejudiced that if somebody is thin that mean he is starving and/or ill. That's why they fed their children with great amounts of food because a plumpy child was a healthy child, and a table covered with dishes is a table in a healthy household. I think that partially was a reason for overfeeding guests even nowadays :)

Life / POLISH HOSPITALITY STILL ALIVE AND WELL? [17]

My friend is 23! lol...

Shelly I just pointed out the origins, of course there are people who were influenced by their families and maintain the same level or maybe kind of hospitality. I still think that serving loooots of food is a rather old custom and most young people won't act like that..

Eurola

I dunno how many Poles you've met, but I can assure you that it's different.. I know lots of young people who are into mediterranean cuisine, who don't each large quantities and serve their guests same portions of food.

Life / POLISH HOSPITALITY STILL ALIVE AND WELL? [17]

I think it's similar now, at least with drinking// you can never miss your turn.. following a famous polish Checkers proverb changed into a drinking proverb

"Za nie picie tracisz życie" ; )
With food it's probaby different in every place, older people who remember war or communism may still be like that - cultivating overeating ;) But there's less and less of such people. During war and communism.. especially war, there wasn't much to eat, so when finally these people lost their shackles and entered capitalism, got their hands on shops with stalls overflowing with food it had become a custom to cook fat and heavy dishes, especially for guests..

Life / HOW WIDESRPEAD IS RECREATIONAL DRUG USE IN POLAND? [30]

I just remembered one thing, there were many "glue sniffers" on the street of Gliwice and Katowice at one time many years ago.. walking around with plastic bags, complete wrecks.. I can't notice them anymore anywhere..

Life / HOW WIDESRPEAD IS RECREATIONAL DRUG USE IN POLAND? [30]

Seanus, after attending Polish secondary school I can say with hand on my heart that is how most of them look like or even worse (that was around 8 years ago), at least here in Silesia..

Life / HOW WIDESRPEAD IS RECREATIONAL DRUG USE IN POLAND? [30]

Who really knows

I was speaking from experience. So you can count on that It's not some newspapers satistics or some random people who are just suspecting stuff despite not growing up in Poland and dealing with these things in daily life.

I agree that most Western European countries have more developed drugs scenes, probably because of communism in Poland and things like drugs arriving much further in time..

Life / HOW WIDESRPEAD IS RECREATIONAL DRUG USE IN POLAND? [30]

Actually I was referring to problem users

Well, you said "drug use" which indicated you meant just "drug use", the same with amphetamine for exams... that didn't sound like you were refering to problem users :) The only real drug addicts I knew started with recreational use of pot and after some time just couldn't stop. I remember one of my mates who said he's gonna look for pot in a litter bin after I told him I had thrown some away into the bin...

Life / HOW WIDESRPEAD IS RECREATIONAL DRUG USE IN POLAND? [30]

Are drugs expected at most of the parties Polish

When I was in secondary school during one of the last terms I remember that at one moment most of the class pupils smoked pot in various forms, by most I mean around 32 from 35 pupils present at the school trip. Most of them of course tried once or twice, but around third of all students smoked for a longer period of time, around 10 people snorted amphetamine or coke, ate shrooms or did some other stuff, probably lsd, xtc.

Grass or hash were extremely easy to get there were usually at least few people in the class that were able to get it.
During high school years I only knew about few people seriously addicted to different drugs from my former ground school - but nobody addicted to heroine which I heard was a common thing in poorer Warsaw districts.

For today I think that availibility might have only increased, and younger kids are trying soft drugs such as pot.

I can't agree with mafketis - most people in Poland do drugs during relaxation time (pot) or parties (pheta, coke, xtc), without any family reasons.

The same with use of boosters such as pheta during studing.. people use is more often for long all week parties now than for exams..

History / Silezia: Breslau, Wroclaw or something else? [16]

I recommend reading "Narrenturm" trilogy by Andrzej Sapkowski, it's action takes place in medieval Silesia, and although those books are mainly fantasy - there's lots of actual information about these times - and wars that were being fought, especially between Husites/Taborites and Germans, a really good read :)

History / Silezia: Breslau, Wroclaw or something else? [16]

It probably won't happen, but if there were to be a poll amongst Silesians wether Silesia should be independent from either Poland and Germany, what would be the result?

No chance for this to happen, but there was a "Newspaper" poll once asking about Silesian independence and the result was that there were many people who wanted at least partial independence (f.i. some sort of governing body in Katowice), unfortunately I can't remember any numbers...

We forget one very important thing, that Silesia had been a Chech property for a pretty long time, if I remember correctly most of the time it existed.

Love / what do polish guys think of spanish girls? [42]

MareGaea

You are right, but after you see too many "generalization" threads, you mention that they contribute nothing at all too many times. And they still keep on appearing in the same biased manner you start to notice that you can't do anything about it.. what you can do is add few of your thoughts every now and then.. : )

Australia / Polish Television in Australia? [3]

I think TVN has a special channel targeted at Poles living abroad, iTVN, although I don't think they are streaming it through the internet because it's a paid channel.

Love / what do polish guys think of spanish girls? [42]

I'm just waiting for some water to boil, have to open my eyes and start working, it's 12:13 in here, so late and I'm still so sleepy, yawn.

As for Spanish girls.. I think that they are a popular breed in Poland, and Spanish look traits are sometimes sought after in Polish girls. From what I've gathered while talking with my friends it looks like Spanish language is much more interesting for them than French or Italian..

Come to Dublin, plenty of Spanish women here :)

I was referring to a sea shanty song "Spanish ladies" : )

Life / Why do Poles drink so much? [161]

Oh alcohol stories, one can never get enough of them, "I drank 15 pints" , "And I did 30".. all the same stuff over and over luckily this kind of boasting ends when people grow up..

Language / Has the influx of returning migrants who speak English affected Polish? [12]

"idziemy na castingi i pozniej na drinki i hot dogi i to bedzie super"

I think you're overexaggerating, these words were in use long before uk miggrations. Moreover I think that the process is taking place in most of europan (if not world) countries.

Is it further eroding efforts to preserve the purity of the language?

I'd say that many people living abroad stuck together in their little communities thus restricting their contact with the language.

Life / Wonderful Poland.......but the attitude of Polish people [150]

Although I think what superpolak says is drivel, I think that disappearance of another supermarket brand wouldn't change much. There are certain supermarkets that change their owner every few years just to renew privileges that they receive for the first year of running, and there are many other companies that would gladly take over..

Life / Polish Birthday Party [10]

Eurola

Some may say that they are, some that they are not. I was refering more to the change that after throwing away the shackles of communism somehow namedays have become less important and birthdays were celebrated more. They are not connected to communism per se but there was still certain assocation few years ago. I heard few older people or comments about them that mentioned that during communism namedays were so much better than those capitalist brithdays.
