UK, Ireland / The best place to buy a house in the UK [120]

The West Midlands has recently been nominated as one of the cheapest places in the UK for housing (in the suburbs, not in Birmingham city centre). There is also a large and steadily growing Polish community. Avoid London at all costs unless you have lots and lots of money. To give you some idea of the difference, you can buy a 3-4 bedroom house with a garden in parts of the midlands for the same price as a studio flat in a dodgy part of London. You may end up as a single mother working in a factory and adopt a dodgy accent that just about everyone in the UK hates, but surely thats a small price to pay for cheap housing.

UK, Ireland / What's So Great About The UK? [416]

Language / misleading differences between Polish and English languages [92]

I love the fact that Gary means saucepans in Polish. There are lots of names that mean something in other languages. (e.g.) Linda = beautiful in Spanish. My bf has a friend whose Polish name means something really rude in English, but I cant remember what it is right now. Maybe we could get some other egs.

In the middle of England a bonk is a place where you keep your money and a fake is a cigarette.

Life / Tradition of blessing food in church at Easter in Poland [15]

My partner has asked me to go to the Polish church today to get the food blessed (eggs, sausages etc.). He cant go as he is working today. Can someone please explain why this is so important and why you cant eat it until the next day?

Love / Brit working in Poland - asking this Polish lady if she's in a relationship? [114]

Good luck. It seems that you have been living in Poland for some time, I wonder why you dont learn Polish? surely that would be the first step towards finding yourself a nice lady. I speak from experience that relationships with language barriers can be challenging.

USA, Canada / NO VISAS to Canada for Poles in the near future [62]

Can someone please clarify..Is it the case that Polish people can legally seek work in Canada or they can only go there on holiday, but then they can apply to get a work visa to stay? What about British people, do you have to secure a job first and then apply for a work visa or can you come on a tourist visa and then later apply? I would love to emigrate to Canada with my Polish partner.

Love / Are Polish men more loyal than English men? [38]

The Midlands is at the very heart of the UK.. and without a heart we would all be dead. Just to stay on topic, I think the answer is probably no.

Life / Smoking ban - will this be coming to Poland like other EU countries? [183]

Ive just come back from Africa... in many countries there (not SA) you can smoke anywhere in the airport terminal, even in the departure lounge or on the runway. I can remember when you used to be able to smoke on planes too..imagine that now.

In the UK lots of pub and restaurant owners invested in expensive patio heaters to encourage smokers to still use their facilities and combat the dreadful weather here. Now the government is trying to ban the use of these heaters as it is said that they contribute to global warming. Surely someone could invent some 'green' outdoor heating? I wonder what they will ban next..the internet maybe?

Love / why is the older women such a problem for polish guys [37]

a biological instinct of breeding,

no no no no no this is not true-what about people who "fall in love" when "breeding" is impossible- same sex couples, disabilities which cannot accomodate chid-bearing-or couples who choose not to breed

Sounds like you guys have been watching one too many animal programmes on TV. :)

Love / Are Polish men more loyal than English men? [38]

yeah the reason i asked cause polands a well known catholic practising country, thinking without sounding thick that mens morals in poland would be a alot higher than in england.they would be more considerate as like more old fashioned in there ways.

so you think if you are a Catholic you are more moral? I think it depends what you mean by loyal.. having traditional family values and religious beliefs doesnt mean you are less likely to cheat on your partner.

as you for you two debating the pros and cons of northerners vs southerners... spare a thought for us Midlanders.. trapped between the two, surely we must be superior.

UK, Ireland / Polish worker's excuse and a vacuum cleaner (UK) [79]

..and the daily mail, daily express etc. etc... It seems you cant pick up a newspaper these days without reading something about 'dodgy' Poles in the UK. The Daily Express (my mom buys it!) ran an article on Saturday about Polish criminals being sent back home at the expense of the Polish government. Today I read that the Sussex police are actively recruiting Polish people as Community Support Officers in an attempt to combat the ever increasing crime caused by Poles in the region, particularly in Eastbourne and Brighton... although apparantly you do need to speak English too.

Love / Polish boyfriends [77]

One BIG thing: you cannot trust what is being said in a language you don't understand. That is an incredibly dangerous position for you to be in. Lord knows what they are saying, but odds are it isn't good.

but after 16 years together I would have thought you had learnt enough Polish to understand the jist of the conversations? If not, then thats worrying. I am sorry you have had a negative experience, but just cos your partner is speaking his native tongue to his ex or female friend doesnt mean he's up to no good. Maybe yours was, but dont judge all Polish men by him.

UK, Ireland / Catholic church experience for Poles in England [22]

Im not Polish but my partner is and we regularly attend Catholic church in London. I have noted a huge increase in both Polish speaking churches and also masses and other specific services being conducted in Polish, especially over the Lent period. Sorry I dont have stats. thats just my observation. I reckon the Poles are swelling the numbers of the UK churches. However, I'm sure there are also those who may choose not to attend once away from their families.. guess its all up to the individual. I cant speak for difference in types of services as Ive not yet been to church in Poland, but I understand that there are some significant differences.

Love / Polish boyfriends [77]

have a look at all the bashing of all the other nationalities on here before you judge. Anyway a forum is all about free speech isnt it. I have a Polish partner who I love, but it doesnt mean I cant pass comment on what I see around me. Polski-zyd you seem to be a tad defensive if you dont mind me saying so...perhaps you are in denial or dont realise the reality.. or you just know some very nice people.. Just cos you dont know bad Polish guys doesnt mean there arent any.

Garmin XL Europe covers UK and Europe including pretty much all of Poland. Tom Tom has limited or no coverage of Poland, only covers the main European countries.

Love / Polish boyfriends [77]

the agenda is that it is POLISH forum to talk about POLISH stuff and this in the section about love and relationships with POLISH people. Everyone has a different opinion and I for one am not bigoted and I dont think most of the other posters on this thread are either.. they are merely conveying their personal experiences and not suggesting that all Polish guys are bad.. so get down off your rocking horse.

Love / Polish boyfriends [77]

I found out from one male Polish friend recently that when he arrived in the UK three years ago (alone) he reached out for anyone who he could be friends with. He didn't like the feeling of being lonely and he admitted that he dated a friend of a girl at work simply for company and nothing more. He had a girlfriend at home in Poland. The girl here fell for him and he dealt with it by ignoring her texts/calls. He had no idea how to deal with it otherwise.

pretty common I would think. Almost every Polish guy here who has a wife or gf back home also has or is pursuing women over here too. I asked my bf about his mates and he said its normal, they just need some companionship while they are here, but most arent looking for anything more.

Love / Polish boyfriends [77]

Some polish men are kind of "less flexible" when it comes to set up polish-non-polish relationships.

and some aren't. Lets face it women will never fully understand men and vice versa, regardless of nationality. Once we all accept that we will be lot happier in our relationships. How is this for weird.. a friend of mines first love who he has not heard from in 20 years recently contacted him through a school friend website. Since then she not only texts but calls him every day from Poland (he is the UK). She has been married for 18 years and has 2 kids and he is in a serious relationship. Its nice to get in touch with old friends, but if he doesnt answer the phone and is too busy to speak to her she hangs up and turns off her phone...at first he was happy to hear from her, but now he has had to tell her he is too busy to speak.... sounds totally nutty to me!

UK, Ireland / Tide turns as Poles end great migration [26]

I think the main problem is that Polish building standards are so low that at first these new Polish builders were accepted with open arms. After a while, we see the results. They put in bathrooms with gaps between the walls and sink units and it becomes ever more costly to correct all their mistakes.

there are plenty of cowboy builders out there and they are not all Polish.. and plenty of Polish builders who are excellent... its all down to this......if you pay crap money then you should expect a crap job, whatever the nationality.
