News / Weak US dollar in Poland and other countries... [180]

Dollar is falling down like a stone. What do you think will happen ?

Well, it will be interesting. I think people from other coutries than the US don't get the whole message yet. They seem happy their currencies (like Polish Zloty) are strong. But they forget that their export will die because people now buy whatever they can in the US. Not even in China sometimes. Canadians go shopping to US; I've heard people from the UK do the same. The US won't import anything from Europe because it's just too expensive and Americans won't buy it. Euro car dealers in the US are in much trouble, Japanese too..

I guess it will go as low as at 2 zl per dollar and from then on it will only increase for the next months or years... The turn of the falling trend will be after the US presidential elections in a year.

This is why I cannot stand some people who are researching their families. They are like pests which will not give up and spam, spam, spam... In the end they would say they were confused. Same old story.

Real Estate / It's hard to find cheap furnished studio for monthly rent in Poland! [3]

Yep, Poland is very expensive - even for Canadians (not to mention Americans :). Speculants still rule the Polish real estate market, but fortunately they are slowly moving to other markets from the countries that have a chance to join the European Union within the next several years.

Work / Looking for work and married to a south african advice please [2]

I think it would be difficult if you don't understand Polish well enough. But basic Polish with adults should be enough in most cases. On the other hand, with children you will learn Polish very fast because children are more patient..

USA, Canada / Standards of Education in US vs Poland [22]

At the elementary level - I think the US standard is higher. Kids in the US are very busy, usually, with all kinds of interests or educational activities. Elementary Polish students are not so complex about learning at this young age. But it changes in high-school and college/university - the teaching level is stronger than in the US (especially math/physics and foreign languages of course).

Life / Halloween in Poland? [77]

I've just received email from a friend in Poland. I asked him if in Poland people celebrate Hallowen. He said - well, kids like the tradition, but adults think they try to mock them or something and some of them curse them ;). I thought it was funny - I think in Poland it's not a popular tradition yet. Maybe it's better...

Real Estate / Can I buy a small farm in Poland? [49]

I don't think you can buy one now - unless you marry a Polish citizen or wait till 2016. Or you lease the land for 3 years at least (I think) and then you may buy it.

Life / Why are Poles attracted to animals? [53]

Apparently, a lot of the searches are coming from Warsaw.

Many foreigners live in Warsaw (I would say over 100 thousands at least).

News / Predictions for Polish Presidential Candidates 2010 [23]

I also think Pawlak has become a strong and effective politician - in spite of the fact he was mocked at the beginning of his political career (especially as the Polish prime minister).

News / Predictions for Polish Presidential Candidates 2010 [23]

Now since the parliamentary elections in Poland are over, who do you think has the best chances to become the next Polish president? The presidential elections in Poland are in about 3 years (2010). From the history it seems Polish people, in spite of stereotypes, are pretty liberal. I remember there was one independent candidate several years ago that had almost become a Polish president - Stan Tyminski. He went to the final elections with Lech Walesa and only there he lost.

The current Polish president - Lech Kaczynski - will surely start to get re-elected in 2010. Who will be his serious opponents? It is said Donald Tusk's dream is to become the next Polish president and his position as a prime minister is just a temporary solution. For me Tusk seems to be better suited as a president, not a prime minister. Who could be a "black horse" in this group? I think Tomasz Lis, a current pretty popular TV reporter, will have a strong position among the Polish nation - he is smart, handsome, has experience in working abroad, is popular, independent, knows languages. Or maybe Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, hard-working but maybe too weak former prime-minister. Another one may be Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, but she probably won't have big chances since she's a woman and not very popular. Same to Jolanta Kwasniewska, the wife of the former Polish president - Aleksander Kwasniewski. Some Poles say Waldemar Pawlak could be a good choice, but he's from PSL (party of Polish farmers) and it's hard to believe he could get much approval.

Any other predictions for the 2010 Poland presidential candidates?

News / What sort of fellow is this Donald Tusk anyway? [34]

One brother (Jaroslaw Kaczynski - the former prime minister) has already been succeeded by D. Tusk.

Donald Tusk is PO leader; liberal guy as it seems. He is popular especially among young, educated Poles from big cities and Polish immigrants in Europe.

Life / Return period for goods in shops in Poland? [14]

I remember when several years ago I bought a Video recorder in Poland. It was defective and I wanted to return it or get a new one. They told me I MUST wait until they send it to the manufacture and they repair it and they would not give me a new one. Since then I never buy expensive stuff in Poland (especially electronics).

News / Poland 2007 Elections: PO Won, PIS second [232]

This should be the Picture of the Year. This is how most politicians (not only in Poland) end their careers. There will be a similar picture on the next elections. It would look great as oil painting too :).

Polish politicians - end

Life / Return period for goods in shops in Poland? [14]

The question is - do the stores in Polanda know in which store you bought the item? In the US they have special tags so they know exactly the store name and location. In Poland - you can buy one item in one store and return it in another I think :).

UK, Ireland / Polish as Irelands Third Offical language? [123]

The hundreds of thousands of Poles who have emigrated to Ireland want their mother tongue to be recognized as third official language of the island, alongside English and Irish Gaelic.

This is I don't get - especially after PO win. So Poles in the UK voted for PO so that they could come back to Poland for a better life, but in spite of that they lost hopes in Tusk who promised to do a second Ireland in Poland?

Life / Return period for goods in shops in Poland? [14]

That's a very interesting question. I haven't been in Poland recently, but from what I know it is VERY difficult to return goods if they are not manufacture-defective. I expect the larger shoping brands may accept returns, but smaller ones (especially clothes) - I truly doubt it.
