Konina, Poland

My great-grandfather's death certificate states he was born in Konina. On a different document it states Galcia. Help!! Where are these near??

Konina is located approx half way between Kraków and Nowy Sącz, a bit east of Rabka Zdrój

Galicia ? It's the region. Konina must be some village.

Deb21, Konina is a small town just one mile from Niedźwiedź which is the larger town in this area. I am going there for the first time this May to visit second and third cousins. My "Sutor" family is from there. What was your great grandfather's surname. I'll see what I can find in their church records

My great grandfathers name was: Albert M. Lach (Albert in polish is Wojciech). His father's name was- Frank Lach. Born: 4-23-1891.

If you find any information I would be sooooooo happy!!

I have no info on Albert's family. I know he had sisters and brothers.

Debbie I found that Wojciech came over on 'The Amerika' and arrived on 2 Jul 1910. His father in Konina is listed as Franz and he was going to Chicago to visit his brother-in-law Stanislaw Bulas. The 1910 Censes shows Stanley Bulas being born abt 1880. Stanley is married to Victoria, age 28. They have a son Joseph age 2. Stanley's brother Sebastian is living with them and his age is 21. Stanley came to USA in 1904 and his wife came over in 1907. His brother came over in 1909.

It looks like in 1920 that Albert was married to Agnes age 24. They had a son Frank age 2 and a daughter age 1.

In 1930 Albert and Agnes also show children named Jennie age 9, Alexander age 4 and Walter age 3.

Sutor has done some good legwork for you. Just confirm the names and dates so that he has the right information. There are occassions that people with the same first and last name with similar birth years may show up on the same ship. Otherwise, if the information is correct you should be very happy. Sutor should at least tell you which websites he gleaned the information.

Sutor does have the right info re: Agnes/Albert children (these are my aunts and uncle and my grandmother). The Bulas name is in the family on my great grandmother's side.

Wonderful. I am very happy for you! Keep going further back in time. This may be challenging, but worth it. If you ever wish to pursue genealogy for the long term consider joining the Polish Genealogical Society of America. They have great resources and a quarterly publication. I am a member.

I forgot to say that the daughter showing on the 1920 Census age 1 was Annie Lach.

I use Ancestry.com and use them to view the 1920 and 1930 Census to find the 'Lack' and 'Bulas' names.

I use Dr. Stephen Morse's web site 'Ellis Island passinger lists in one step'. Many times I need to use the wild card '*' because records have misspelled surnames, towns, etc. I also use the wild card in searching Ancestry.com records.

Stephen Morse's site is very handy. I met him last year at the PGSA conference near Chicago. I had a glitch with my laptop prior to presenting at the conference and he was able to get me going. Although I missed his speech (since we were on at the same time in different rooms) I heard that he has made it easier for lots of people doing searches.

Deborah G. I just returned from Konina Poland and have pictures of the villiage. I did not have the time to look for the Lach name in my research at the Catholic Archive in Krakow and the local church in Niedzwiedz which served Konina until recently. At the Archive the hours of operation were only from 9:00 to 1:00 M-F and they were closed the first week I was in Poland. So I could only go through the Birth, Marriage and Death looking for my surname because it took so long to get through the binders. I went to the Niedzwiedz Church late on a Friday because the priest made an appointment to see me. He would not let me touch the Church Books and wanted to flip through all the pages himself. He did not speak English so we had difficulties communicating and then he cut the meeting short. I think he had even more records than the Archive. Next year I'm thinking of another try because a Polish person from the Konina area wants to look at the books also. I might have better luck. I did find a Lach in my family tree in Konina who married a GGGG Grandfather. I ran out of time so now I will need to wait until later. I'll write to a lady in Konina who may be able to find something about the Lach's in Konina. Will get back to you later.
