Hi all! To all people who are familiar with the city called Olsztyn in north-eastern Poland in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, what is it known for, what reputation does it have for people from all over Poland and what do you associate that city with? What are popular things to do in Olsztyn and are there any Olsztyn-specific things to do there?

All I know about Olsztyn, apart of course from the name, is that it used to be called Allenstein before the outbreak of WWII, and probably

contains at least some remanents of her historic German past.

Other than that, the only city in Poland I know even a bit is Szczecin, also known as Stettin on German atlases to this day:-)

I'd ask someone on the forum more familiar with Poland (and Olsztyn) than I.

Olsztyn

I know it's the gateway to the Masurian lake district and there's an airport there. Have a look at these links:

The reputation is neutral or positive. I know they have a nice Old Town. In 1980s I spent there a few days, attending an international folk festival.

I can see it is still held today.

I would say it is not known for anything more exciting than being in the lowest league of the voivodship capitals due to its low population size and cultural offer, but good location due to being surrounded by lakes, sleepy and quiet. The NE of the country has, in general, better air and surface water quality due to being less densely populated, having less industrial polluters, more favourable wind patterns for air quality than most of Poland.

However, the voivodship usually leads in highest unemployment rates, lowest test scores in education, childhood poverty, and other similar rankings.

These are the reasons which would certainly attract me to move there if I ever decided to leave Lesser Poland voivodship, endowed with rich culture and magnificent history. :) I suppose there are more people like me.
