those are letter boxes..

Ha...yes i know all about them , i have one on the gate of my farm....But i noticed when i first came to Poland that houses and shops do not have the hole in the door with a letterbox , like for example in the UK...

I can remember going one night to a business place to drop off a letter , but could not find any letter box , thats when i noticed that no shop had such a letterbox....

Is there any cultural or political reason for this...?? have doors in Poland ever had a letterbox....??

Just wondered...???

It just seems strange to an Englishman that a business cannot recieve mail unless its open , and somebody is there...

Well, postmen tend to deliver mail during the day, you know... There is absolutely no need to deliver anything outside of working hours. Even so, most people (and probably many or all businesses as well) do have a letterbox you can use.

our 140 year old flat has a letterbox, but it's not in use. Polish blocks of flats have a european standard letterbox (the one near the main entrance door). it's exactly the same as those throughout europe.

there is a town in devon, uk that has letterboxes at the front gate.

Yes, in the way that brits understand a letterbox.

in flats. i imagine too many stairs.

to make every thing easier for the postie i guess.

but, as i said earlier there is now a european standard and all buildings must meet it. blame the EU.

The shorter the distance that Poczta Polska have to transport your post, the less chance that one of their basterd staff will steal it.

actually Poles in Poland prefer their mail to be delivered personally by a mailman on a silver plate... you can understand how useless mailboxes are in this situation....

Why? I suspect that it's to do with the same way that there are massive ugly fences everywhere in Poland - because people don't want ANYONE accessing their property. Of course, big fences just mean that there's something worth stealing inside, but Poles don't get this ;)

that's understandable... i want my privacy and people are noisy... what the heck is wrong with a fence?
Canadians think it's ridiculous... ah well, i like Canadian bacon...

Because when you compare German villages to Polish villages - there's just no comparison, the big fences in Poland are ugly. Very, very ugly - and are frankly an eyesore.

There's nothing wrong with a well designed, well implemented fence - but the metal monsters in Poland just make villages and towns seem oppressive.

I must say i quite like the fact my postman toots his horn at my gate and has a chat as he hands me my post...

I do have a post box on the gate . which he puts it in if i am not at home...

I must say , in the five years i have lived here , i have had nothing lost in the post , and i have had all manner of expensive stuff posted to me...

I have no complaints about the mail service here at all...
