Any suggestions?!

ASAP is a very generic term.

Quickly is possible if you care to speak a few words without the ability to have a coherent conversation. Of course your mileage may vary but to speak somewhat OK it will take at least months.

I don't mean to discourage you but the language is among the hardest in the World.

For now I'd concentrate on a few canned phrases and expressions. I'm sure the effort will be appreciated but don't expect to understand their replies. Then take it from there.

Good luck.

It's difficult to learn one of the most difficult languages in the world quickly.

But start with basic phrases and expressions. So you can greet the people you're going to visit in PL. Then sign up for a course, get a book+CD, and try to talk to Polish people more and more. Probably your BF can help you with that more and more as you progress. The best way to learn Polish is (of course) to be in Poland and interact with Poles.

I can guarantee that it's not impossible to learn, but it's a lot of hard work and it takes time.

Good Luck!

I know many people like rosetta stone. You can find a bit torrent of it for free.

You can down load byki for free at their website byki.com.

Get a good phrase book.

Its not an easy language. I have been working on it for almost 3 years and it's just now starting to make sense.

The easy thing about Polish is that the pronunciation is much more consistant then English.

No you don't need to learn Polish. Just be yourself, Polish people are great, they will know if you are trying to be someone else. They want you to be just the way you are, nothing else.

The best way is immerse yourself in Polish. Stop speaking in English and just go for it. Try to memorize a few phrases from phrase books, and I recommend getting "Polish in 4 weeks". Although it's likely impossible to really learn Polish in four weeks, it's the best book I've found for explaining grammar of Polish. Use this book, plus some phrase books and try to only speak Polish. You'll find people in Poland are generally willing to help you learn, as long as you're not holding up the line somewhere. :)

An impossible task. Polish is one of the most difficult languages to learn because there are hardly any rules in the Polish grammar. If you persevere you might learn a few Polish phrases but not much more than that. I guess if you live there, study Polish while immersed among Polish speaking people, you will get there after a year or two...

Hardly.

There are plenty of rules in Polish - the fact that you didn't learn them is your failing, not the language.

Well, no chance you will learn the grammar, hard to believe but many natives have problems EVEN with writing the words correctly! It's pretty much obvious that learning English is way easier than learning Polish. The best solution is to tell your boyfriend to buff up his family's English skills (I don't believe they can't form a single sentence, English is just everywhere around nowadays). Actually it'd take AGES to get used to the spoken Polish as the way Poles talk is almost beyond comprehension for a foreigner. For example, lots of Poles distort the words so there is very little to no chance you will find them in the dictionary (not even mentioning the fact that each word can change it's meaning depending on the situation, dude's face expression etc). Hard to explain but don't even try, really, you will be confused and irritated ;d.

I don't agree and we have many proves here on PF that learning Polish is possible. It amazes me how many foreigners know Polish and they are great at it!

Well, no chance you will learn the grammar,

You can if you persevere. It's not easy to start with admittedly, but any language is hard if you don't understand how it works.

Half the battle is accepting you won't learn it overnight.

.

Polish is one of the most difficult languages to learn because there are hardly any rules in the Polish grammar

Not true. There are plenty of rules. Maybe you didn't give it a fair go, or gave up too easily.
