Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA?

The French will be appalled at you saying that, A J ;)

I'm partly French, so I'm allowed to **** off French people. (It's the only thing I'm good at, so I might as well make the most out of that quality!)

But to be perfectly honest: Some of my favourite cheeses are actually French ones Seanus, just not all. I'm sure every country has its own tasty recipes, and well, if there's one thing we can't *really* argue about, then that would be taste.

It is, but I dislike it anyhow, nor am I a fan of super starchy Polish dishes such as potato stuffed pierogi.

Ridiculous.We have trademark dishes like moussaka,greek salad and a lot more which you have to come here to taste.Souvlaki and gyros are famous junk food and among the few that can compete to Mc Donald's.Just watch tourists frequenting them.We also have the best tasting fish in Europe,the best lemons in Europe,the best olive oil,and the best grapes.(Italian olive oil is 40% Greek,french wines are made of greek grapes as well).We have the tastiest pomerances,melons and lots of vegetables that exist only here.

I had one Polka who was vegetarian and told me our vegetarian dishes do not exist in Poland at all because they don't have the ingredients.

They have goulash,veprovy ryzek and svickovou.Typical knedli a zeli.

The Czech cuisine is closely related to the Bavarian and Austrian cuisine. Bavarian is more hearty (but not better), while the Austrian cuisine is more sophisticated and offers better cakes and sweets. Austrian is probably the best in Central Europe, since influences from Hungary, Czechland and the Balkan enriched the cuisine.

Okay, I'll be serious for a second: I think the biggest reason for Polish food not being too popular in America is because of the climate? I mean, Polish food is *really* heavy and pretty fat, so it's basically good food when you're freezing your butts off. In the milder and warmer climates however, I think people crave for something that's a bit lighter, saltier or spicier? In the colder climates you burn more calories just to keep yourself warm. What I mean to say is most Polish dishes are a bit too heavy to digest for most people in milder climates. (I'm saying this because I know we have a few dishes which are pretty fat and heavy too, and I usually dislike that kind of food when it's warmer outside!)

Yet there are many varieties, most of them nicer than Polish restaurant food. Which is monotonous in the extreme.

Yes, this is true. Which is why people prefer it to burnt karkowka, potatoes mashed without butter or cream and semi-raw cabbage.

or pasta with sauce ( italian ).

And over a thousand ways of serving pasta.

me too. But I like pierogi with mashrooms and kapusta... and kapusta kiszona is necessary to make it :)

Btw if Germans invented sourkraut then it means that without Germans there would not be the bigos!!! O_o

I think most European food is less "interesting" than, say, Asian food. People are moving away from the meat/potatoes/cabbage diet. I know one restaurant here in the San Francisco area went out of business recently.

My parents once took me out to a Greek restaurant on my birthday, but I insisted they not sing the traditional stolat song when dessert was served because I dislike having attention drawn to my table when dining, and lo and behold there was another table of diners who sang it to their red-faced son!

I agree about cakes and sweets(which are also delicious in Germany) but I disagree about food.Czech and hungarian food tastes better than austrian and it is sth many tourists want to taste(it is considered an asset in these countries).

But compared to most other mediterranean cuisines Greek cuisine is really the worst. Don't get me wrong, still 1000x better and healthier than everything from Central Europe, but the Greek cuisine is a cuisine of the simple folks, while the Italian, French, but also Spanish cuisine is more sophisticated, simply since their societies were more sophisticated too (apart from classical Greece of course).

Basic ingredients used for cooking in Mediterranean area are thanks to nature simply more delicious (fruit, vegetable). More sun.
So, meal has to be too.

Tomato, for instance, is noticeably juicier and more tasteful from North to South in range of few hundred km's.

Southern, I don't like to eat at all, but in Greece I almost enjoyed it. ( Greek cuisine better impression left on me than anything I tried to eat in Italy (known), France (confusing) or Spain (not fitting to the flavors I'm used to )

What I tasted in Greece was almost making me forget about other things and think about food ;)

In warsaw there are several Greek restaurants, but they are mostly attended by Greeks.

I was there just few times, but didn`t like the food, just meat from sheep ,I don`t like at all .

Just watch tourists frequenting them.

To tell the truth it is cheaper to visit Greece than Maldives .

This is true I agree.Basically the Italians prepare everything we also have in a variety of ways they are true artists.They are more delicate our food applies to the more primitive istincts.

Same in Canada. Only Polish neighbourhoods have them. German cuisine is not popular either. I guess the Poles and Germs had bigger ambitions when coming to North America. Restaurants don't pay as much. Poles open more deli's and bakeries.

One theory explaining why traditional Northern European cuisine is not spicy is that because foods do not spoil as quickly in the chill air there was no need to mask decay with bolder flavors.

To tell the truth it is cheaper to visit Greece than Maldives .

Not always cheaper and much nicer and nearer too. And the restaurant culture is great.

There is a very simple reason why northern european food is not tasty.They did not have olive oil.Without olive oil you get inferior taste.We call them ''water boiled''.If you get used to mediteranean cuisine and olive oil then you cannot eat anything else.I think Americans got used to fast food and mediteranean cuisine for upscale and so they cannot conform to other cuisines.(except maybe latin american).

Very much so , snails, crayfish, frogs, goose liver are very sophisticated, indeed .

Then tell me why greek restaurants are successful in Germany and USA while polish are not.Why do foreigners praise our food.
I also have to repeat that in countries like Poland,Ukraina etc you cannot taste real greek food because they lack the ingredients.Some of them are imported to Germany but very few are imported to Eastern Europe so you cannot get the taste because the local ingredients are not tasty.
