Irish Independent today had a terrible article about a Polish woman called "Magda"

It was found out by some Internet posters that the people who wrote it did a very hacked job of translating it.

The so-called journalists were copying an article that appeared in a Polish newspaper.


Now the Polish Ambassador to Ireland has become involved.

Shame on the Irish Independent, hopefully tomorrow it'll be made to print a complete apology and retraction.

That should more accurately read "in Poland, people work the 3rd longest hours". A significant number of Poles are working elsewhere in the Union and work according to the norms in those countries.

I have read all the reader's comments (over 600 of them) on this article in Independent and I have to say I am surprised.I expected tons of anti Polish comments from Irish and sure there was few but a majority of these people seem to be fair minded.Kind of makes me feel bad as I could fly Aer Lingus via Dublin but because of my personal prejudice against Irish (meaning I didn't want to let them make a penny of my money as I thought of them as Polish haters) I booked with Air Canada for the same money but with 2 stops(Toronto and Munich) instead of just one (Dublin).And I don't even like Canadians.

Its editor should print a front page article tomorrow with factual information regarding the number of poles in receipt of social welfare in Ireland.

There are over 7,000 Polish families in receipt of rent allowance. Fact.

There are circa 40,000 in receipt of welfare each week. Fact.

Fifteen million is sent back to Poland each year in the form of child benefit. Fact.

Oh, and a stipend for social welfare is that you have to be actively jobhunting and I was under the impression the checked up on this.

It's six o'clock in the morning and we're walking in complete darkness through a golf course.

I travelled to Ireland to see what life is like for Polish people who've lost their jobs. I thought that when you're unemployed at least you don't have to jump out of bed so early in the morning, but no such luck.

Magda (36 years old, almost 2 years on unemployment benefits in Ireland): "I always start my days in the same way: I go down to the beach to see the sunrise. It sets me up for the rest of the day. I used to sleep until noon, but now I don't want to waste my life."

Irish people have been doing this for decades. Poland joined the EU so they have equal rights. There is a need to change the social welfare system 100%.
