Which cities in Poland are nice to visit

Grafitti-ridden. Gangs of drunken yobs. Spoilt by the highway running through town. Really nothing special to be seen in the town itself. Needs a generation to be pretty again. Head out west to the beach at Kamienny Potok and beer on the sun terrace (real glass) is 7 zlotys. But please don't come. I like the peace and quiet :)


Sorry AussieSheila - you were in the wrong place. Zakopane is ********. For Polish mountain folklore aka skiing and partying you should have gone to Wisla or Szczyrk.

Częstochowa....... no thanks - my nomination for the most depressing place in the whole country. Any place worse?
Best places I have visited? Wisla, Wroclaw, Sandomierz, Chelmno.....

I found Szczecin full of wonderful outdoor cafes and it had a pretty old quarter.
Wish I'd been there longer:-)

Poznań's supposed to be extremely attractive! I've never been. Any highlights recommended?

The old university looked kind of pretty:-) Then again, Wrocław is just a knockout by comparison!

Certainly Szczecin is a very interesting city. There we can see the real pearls of architecture, and relax in a hundred year old Dana Hotel, where there are served delicious food. Besides, you must not see the Castle of Pomeranian Dukes and Waly Chrobrego Promenade

I liked Nowy Targ. Beautiful place. And Krakow? Nicest city in the world whether or not you are a college student or an old timer. I don't buy this dissing of Krakow. Not one bit. Its walkability is a 10. In my experience very few gypsies or pickpockets hanging out (I keep an eye peeled for that when anywhere in Europe), but, especially compared to Warsaw which has a lot of them. Always wear "poor-looking" clothing when trolling around touristy places. That goes anywhere in Europe.

Zamosc is a very nice place within the old walls.It also has a nice Park with red squirrels.Usually something going on in the main square.

Chelm,not far away is also interesting with its maze of old tunnels under the town.There are guided tours of these and hard hats are provided.

As previously stated,Krakow is a must.A bit touristy,but plenty to see and do.Plus the nearby salt mine,which is an amazing place.Go early as it is very popular.Then move on to Zakopane for the mountains,cable car and funicular.Buy the local smoked sheeps cheese-yummy.

For sheer natural beauty, I'd love to visit the Tatra Mountains! Just looked at some pics from a Polish friend and much of the scenery's a knock out:-) WSPANIAŁY WIDOK!!

I was told by a Polish citizen that there are several tunnels under Warsaw also that lead to bunkers outside the city.
Can anyone Polish here confirm that ?

Why somebody Polish? Some people, who show an interest (Maf, for example), know more about Poland than a great many Polish people do. Just 'sayin''.......

I have never heard of anything like this. There are bunkers in the city built in the commie times against the aftermath of an atomic explosion and one group of German bunkrrs on the outskirts of Warsaw. But no tunnels unfortunately.

Cough! You are the resident troll on this forum, and you feel fit to query a perfectly reasonable observation? The poster known as johnnyreb said "Pole" and I opinioned that many a foreigner knows more about Poland than many Poles. Opinion, just that - but I'm sticking to it.

Sounds like an urban legend, one reason it took so long to build the metro was supposedly that the soil doesn't lend itself to tunneling...

My Polish citizen friend that lives here in the U.S.A., for the purpose of getting an education, said that there is an old German bunker not far from their property in Poland.

They said it had 'unsafe' tunnels running from it into Warsaw.
They have not been back to Poland in several years (12) so couldn't verify if it was still even there.


This is very possible Maf. as this person was very young when they came to the U.S. some twelve years ago.
I will dig deeper to substantiate their story.
They did say they were told not to play in those tunnels as children because they were unsafe.
I ask them for some of the slang phrases used in Poland so I could post them here to impress you.
They said that since they have not been to Poland in such a long time that they still spoke "clean" Polish and didn't know the latest Polish slang.

I was wrong.
The tunnels were not by Warsaw but by a town called Czestochowa.
That is where my friend is from.

I went to Berlin recently and could visit some nearby Polish towns. Gonna raise some eyebrows but I found Gorzów Wlk. surprisingly nice. Not many historic landmarks but it looks like a very livable place. Even the new apartment buildings look of very high quality and not as boring as most of them look elsewhere.
