What is so nice about EU and can`t be done without EU?

EU-funding of various projects!!! Visa and passport free travel!!! Growing feeling of affinity/common cause!!! Strengthening of democracy!!! Better checks and balances!!! :-)

Anyway, Poles are happy to be in the EU (eurobaramoter). The EU has brought money in the form of grants and private investment. Farmers are being subsidized instead of closing up shop, and my favorite part, more Poles are intermarrying and having children with fellow proto-Slavs, the Germans, Anglo-Saxons, and Celts.

That doesn't really surprise me but the Germans, according to this barometer, are also supposedly happy with the EU, that's very surprising. I didn't have the impression after talking to countless Germans while in Germany. Even now, anytime I talk to my friends or relatives in Germany, none of them is happy about the EU membership.

Like always, you can't trust the statistics.

If this gentleman (or any of the people in the background) come from the EU, I am a penguin (he looks very Arab to me, and the last time I checked none of the countries over there is part of the EU). Poland receives the most grants from the EU than any other country in the EU. Everywhere you go, you see signs "paid for by the EU", whether it'd be infrastructure, renovation or even school projects. Polish people can work abroad, we can work in Poland ... a win-win situation if you ask me.

Although, to be honest, I think enough is enough. The average Dutch person pays 2.500 euro per year in taxes to the EU. The NL are together with one or two other countries, the main contributors. I.e. their taxpayers are. I know it is a bit selfish, but I don't want any more countries to become part of the EU. Those who are candidate-members (and other people wish to see become part of the EU) are mostly countries that don't have a lot to contribute, only to hold up their hand. Which means that my taxes will only increase. Thanks, but no thanks.

Georgia, Ukraine, Turkey?! Jee, who's next?! Belarus, Armenia ... give me strength ... :-S

I don't even think that most of the EU-12 countries should have been allowed to join in the first place. Slovenia, yes - it's catching up rapidly. Estonia too. But the rest? No way.

what does it matter. Today he may live in Egypt, Germany, Turkey or Poland or wherever. EU is one big happy family.


Serbs won Adriatic see for Slavic world but, Slavic world isn`t popular idea. Anyway, today Adriatic belong to Croatia, tomorrow it may belong to Germany or EU,... the day after tomorrow... well, who knows

On the other hand, There are quite a few more Dutch trucks rolling around now, and Dutch money is being invested heavily all around (with tidy profits).

The problem though, is a good one. Dutch taxpayers are paying for it. It should be coming out of corporate income taxes, as companies see the biggest benefit (which of course in the end is a benefit to the employee, but it's too indirect).


The entire idea was equilibrium. Are the Dutch getting any poorer? Social welfare for the poorer countries, and corporate welfare for the richer countries.

Not enough power for the people who are paying for the experiment. There need to be way more referendums on issues. People are confused as to what MEPs and MPs are responsible for anymore, and they stopped caring. Huge blow to democracy.

Have you seen the corruption list? Wow! I mean, I knew we were corrupt already, but I didn't know we were more corrupt than Poland? I'm afraid terminology like economic freedom doesn't mean much to the average citizen though, since it's a term used to describe the current climate of business.

I guess some politicians think it's nice to get their countries indebted to the IMF, which will undoubtedly secure the power of the international corporates and banks, and the hold they will have over some countries. (If you can see where I'm going?)

Fits the trend as well. Poland shares low numbers along with Romania and Bulgaria. Most migrants are economic migrants, so it makes sense for them to avoid the poorest countries in the EU.

I think they're starting to discover that Poland is quite easy to obtain residency in, though.

No ouch, it's just a fact. It's growing a lot faster than Western economies, but the people are still among the lowest earning in the EU. Why go for that, when you could pluck the easy fruit?
