The Jewish-controlled leftist-liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza (known by many as Gazeta Wybiórcza) ran screaming headlines across the front page of its Friday edition: NIEDZIELA BEZ MSZY.
It was reporting the latest findings of the Catholic Church's Statistical Institute which said that in 2011 only 40% of Poles regularly attended Sunday mass - down from 41% in 2010. That figure was 10% compared with 20 years ago.
From a purely psychological standpoint, the hour a week spent in church provides much needed respite from the humdrum weekly routine of work, study, commuting, shopping, netsurfing, watching the telly,etc. But I realise there are people who regard nursing a hangover or washing the car as spiritually more uplifting. I didn't drink last night and my wife washes my car. Some of us non-believers do actually do interesting stuff, like reading books (or writing them). Some are probably doing volunteer work today, with no hope of eternal reward. Meanwhile, in the churches millions are attempting to strike deals with the Almighty. "If you get me through my exam, I'll be good."

That is a very idealistic and naive view. Look around you, what do you see? Don't kid yourself. Most people are probably lying in bed now trying to shake off a hang over. The slightly older ones might go shopping.
All of Poland's media reported the downturn in mass attendnace, but only Wyborcza so brazenly highlighted it with a big, bold headline. Anyone know why?
Good. Poles are increasingly thinking for themselves, which is always a good thing, unless you're "in power", of course. If Poles become more like the Czechs, that's great. Perhaps Gazeta Wyborcza and friends are thinking for them and turning them away from Catholicism in the same way a pro Catholic media source tries to take people and convert/keep them. If someone turns Catholic you can use the same argument. 'Finally he/she is thinking and not listening to those atheists, finally he/she has seen the light.' Anyway it is not difficult to convince a person to turn away from religion, after all living a morally lawless life and doing whatever feels good sounds like a fantastic life, but it does not mean it is necessarily the right way to live. These days there is no honour or 'doing what's right.' These days what's right is whatever feels good, whatever suits me best and whatever I can get the most benefit out of. Shame really.
i believe we should keep holy the (or at least a day of rest)sabbath day,because once it become a normal day, workers will be cajoled/forced by the "norm" to work as if a week day. The neo liberal agenda would love its "taxed to the neck" workers to work 24/7. I'm an atheist but f0ck that game of playing into the net of the corporate state.
You are all fighting over nothing. Most Poles are still attending, but about half are brave enough to admit that it's not every single Sunday ;-) BTW, lots and lots of agnostics and atheists also attend Mass (I used to) for the sake of family members etc. So in fact you have absolutely no idea what's really going on the church-going universe ;-p

True we cannot know these types of figures for sure. I non believer might go, a believer might not go. At Christmas and Easter I assume the figure rises considerably. This is not a debate on the figures though but rather that the article by Gazeta Wyborcza is clearly stating this a positive to be proud of.

The masses I've attended recently (at several different churches around the country) have been standing room only - outside the building. Poland needs to build more churches.
