We saw in WWII the result of that selfish stance. Churchill ignored your country because he felt like you needed to learn a lesson. False bravado can be seen a mile off and exposed! Lately, a guy who I really respect, Pudzian, has turned to that. He feels he doesn't need a trainer, LOL.

Czarnkow, that kind of comment either comes from stupidity or deep-seated insecurity. Poland is in the EU now and has many freedoms and grants as a result. I'm not gonna assume anything about you but are you one of those Poles that never lived through communism but still sees himself as an expert on it? LOL

No1 country of Europe, what does that mean? That it was the first to be discovered? That it leads in GDP? That it takes the lead role in international affairs?

Sok, my Polish isn't quite good enough at times to capture nuances. The OP clearly translated 'high-minded' from Polish as I doubt that a native speaker would use that. What is 'high-minded'? Ambitious? Superior? Na haju? ;)

Thanks, Ziemowit. I still don't get what the OP had in mind though. The very fact that Poland is 95% Roman Catholic but only 55-60% practise says sth in itself.

Yeah, I'm still confused what the question is? Is the question "are Polish high-minded?" a positive or a negative assertion? Could someone, preferably the initial poster ask this question in Polish? Maybe that would clarify things a tad?

Well, I have always had good experiences there but I have heard plenty of horror stories, largely of misappropriation of goods which is a heinous breach of trust.

Actually, after you've typed "high-minded" into thetimesonline search engine, you get 951 results as of today. The adjective has usually been used there with nouns such as 'seriousness', 'ambition', 'generosity' and others, or with reference to individuals and personalities.

The closest example of use of this adjective to the way it's been used in the title of this thread was in the review of the book by Nicholas Penny "National Gallery Catalogues: The 16th-Century Italian Paintings, Volume II: Venice 1540-1600" by Jonathan Keates in The Sunday Times of April 27, 2008:

"From the siren Serenissima, wicked old Venice full of sex, masks and money, we flee to the uncluttered austerities of high-minded Florence, to detox with bracing doses of Giotto and Fra Angelico."

But true, it was the only such use in connection to a country or a city that I've found in the list of searched results.

Yes, some do, so you could call the high-minded...But Poles are not the only Europeans in this category.

Exactly, native speakers (myself included) just don't get the drift of this word on both sides of the pond. It's a bit like the word earnest, not always so clear.

The highest mind in Europe is a lost Dutch tourist ontop of an Alp. He knows little of Poland. He knows little of much but is enjoying life.

I would say that any member of NATO is U.S.A's ally on paper. Yet Poland has shown greater sense of alliance then other countries in Europe making her a: ********** dog, ***** or anything along that line

BUT you gotta remember as there is a VISA problem for many Poles who wants to come to the USA, the people start to feel resentful or at least not the same as before considering U.S.A

Yes U.S.A don't look at Poland as an ally or an sphere of influence that much since cold war is just over. That's why Poland wanted to have missile shield's in Poland (to have American troops here or an very important thing for the Americans)
