Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy.

More to come, no doubt.

BUT:

KODs approach is all wrong Delph.

Nobody gives a **** anymore about the free media. It's all there, right here. It's called the internet.

Now:

If they said: Let's call on this criminal government to resign, let's call for a public vote of no confidence in this government - then I am interested.

Very, very LAME.

Patience, Doug ;) This tactic is highly effective - it will be all over the Western media about PiS and their intentions to destroy the free media. A sea of demonstrations and Polish flags all over Poland will be reported abroad - and the soundbite "in defence of free media" is very effective.

Notice how Duda hasn't signed the media law yet...

Enlighten me.

It's worth reading this article if you want to see exactly how Jarosław Kaczyński controls the PiS-orientated media.

As many smaller developing nations, Poland is just a bottle floating in the ocean. It's just how it is. Foreign companies invest to make a profit, but with that investment they brought work and on the whole, better conditions and practice. Joining the EU made it easier for that foreign money to invest in Poland, as well as the EU payouts that came with it. Poland avoided recession over the last few years largely due to spending on infrastructure from EU money. Certainly you cannot argue that it didn't boost GDP. Yes a lot of industries got privatised as a condition of EU membership, but a lot of state owned industries were bloated and uncompetitive, suffering from theft by employees no end (at all levels, so thats management and factory floor). Generally, big business isnt safe in government hands, just look at whats going on in the coal mining industry, where the government seems determined to make just about everyone pay towards its upkeep.

defence of free media

USEFUL IDIOTS THINK THEY'RE MARCHING FOR DEMOCRACY!

The Petrus, Neumanns and other trough-defenders have told the masses they are allegedly "marching for democracy" or in "defence of free media", but have failed to explain what potential results the demonstrators can expect. Almost no-one has listed any possible scenarios:

1. PiS will become frightened of the demos and revamp their programme to resemble that of their PO predecessors and put PO and KOD people in charge of public media.

2. PiS will become extremely frightened and voluntarily step down so snap elections can be held.
3. Neither 1 or 2 will occur so the "street" will forcibly eject the current government as Wałęsa has suggested.
4. Since the government will resist point 3, the EU sends a contingent of armed "peace-keepers" to Poland to enforce the will of the "street".

5. Neither of the above occur, the government diligently work to fulfil their campaign pledges, and the opposition treat the country to 4 years of street demos ahead of the next election in 2019.

*** The rabble-rousers should at least have the decency to inform the marchers braving the freezing winter cold what the tentative outcome of their sacrifice may be.

Latest update as of 20:00.

There will be more demonstrations added as they get confirmed. I expect quite a few more abroad to occur, too.

Plenty more to be added abroad, including San Francisco and Cologne for the first time, but I'll wait for the updated map to be made.

Nice to see that the Polonia is turning out, too :)

You failed to explain which scenario the demonstrators think they will bring about!
Or do the Komitet Obrony Koryta rabble-rousers prefer to keep them in the dark with sweeping generalisations such as "march for demcoracy"?

I am not convinced Delph. When KOD come up with something STRONG, I will give up my not inconsiderable Saturday earnings to go and support them - but this is weak IMO. Sorry.

Who ever said Polonia cannot be deluded. But if you asked them what concrete scenario all the demos will bring about, they too will hum and haw and draw a blank expression just as you do.

The PO regime

The PRL had their nomenklatura elite, and the PO regime had their oliagarch elite who took orders from foreign coporate interests. One wonders whether the marchers believe that after each of them has clocked 100 or maybe 500 kilometres, Petru will utter some magical incantation and presto -- platformer "democracy" will re-appear; in plain English -- high-sounding rhetoric for the masses and proftis and privileges for the chosen bankster clique!

And PiS has a president who's breaking the law and an unelected power behind the throne.

No, it is not. The communist way of doing things is to have control over everything which in this case would mean control over all the media. But this is not the case in Poland. The state-controlled media are in minority today in Poland and the ones which really matter are public TV channels including TVP1 and TVP2. Other broadcasters are independent and have often been anti-PiS just to recall TVN which is a very big channel. There is no major press title that would be state-controlled with the biggest quality newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza being strongly anti-PiS.

I think it is fair that the government should have some channels of information to be able to present their views to the public in the face of the fact that most of them may be well against them.

Ha, ha, ha, in fact my intention was to write "high-quality paper" or "quality paper" in order to contrast this kind of press with the tabloid press of which "Fakt" is the biggest one. Helas, I don't know how this "biggest quality" went through.

Why is there public media? Are state owned tv and radio important enough to survive on their own?

Other broadcasters are independent and have often been anti-PiS just to recall TVN which is a very big channel.

If PiS controlled public media are anything like PiS positive media then TVN will only become bigger (not so sure about Polsat)

"Ignoring the concerns of EU politicians and media freedom groups, the Polish president has secured government control of state radio and TV. The EU Commission has downplayed the move, asking that it not be "overdramatized". Source RT (Got to be true then)

looks like the EU are not that worried.

to present their views to the public in the face of the fact that most of them may be well against them.

The problem is that they want a lot of money from the Polish taxpayer to present their biased views. PiS already have Telewizja Republika - why do they need to use the public broadcaster for their propaganda?

Furthermore, being forced to pay extra taxes to fund a government mouthpiece is madness.
Polonius3  980 | 12275

public broadcaster

Then why was the "objective" public broadcaster titlted in a pro-PO, anti-PiS direction under PO/PSL?
Now the public media will finally become "reliable, obejctive and credible", as stated by the presidential spox.

Then why was the "objective" public broadcaster titlted in a pro-PO, anti-PiS direction under PO/PSL?

Except it wasn't. The recent research showed that TVP1 presented the most unbiased election coverage, while TV Trwam and TV Republika were the most biased.

Now the public media will finally become "reliable, obejctive and credible", as stated by the presidential spox.

You mean "completely controlled by the government".

See, Polonius, people are capable of thinking for themselves, and they're not happy that TVP and Polskie Radio will become the official mouthpiece of the government. That's why there are mass demonstrations taking place on Saturday.

Notice how Ironside responds to independent research with abuse and bad language. It's entirely the modus operandi of PiS - childish, abusive, primitive attacks on anything that doesn't conform with the approved version of events.

When they weren't completely controlled by the government?

As I said, TVP was actually quite balanced. PiS only said it was "anti-PiS" because it didn't present them in the best possible light at all times.

Nah, that the same old hogs refusing to part with their trough.

Don't worry Ironside, the opposition are growing in strength. The latest opinion polls show that PiS are far behind the opposition, and it will only get worse.

Anyway, latest update, though I think there's still quite a few missing internationally from this. We can expect demonstrations next Saturday, too.

Now, let me show you something considering that those who demanded ``democracy`` in Poland yelled that (citation): ``Poland isn`t Hungary!``. In other words that mean, that the one who yelled that demanded blind obedience of Poland to western Europe.

prijatelj Orban

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced that his country would veto any possible EU sanctions against Poland.

"The European Union should not think about applying any sort of sanctions against Poland, because that would require full unanimity and Hungary will never support any sort of sanctions against Poland," Orban said, according to Reuters.
