Whatever ism you call it, poles all over the country celebrate it. Its arguably the worlds largest nationalist event. No criticisms by the eu or anyone calling poles attending celebrations fascists as the eurocrats did will change that. If anything it'll alienate poles from the ec even more. Motherland it is Motherland not Fatherland.

Well "ojczyzna" seems related to ojciec and not matka (matczyzna means something very different...)

On the other hand, Poland is usually personified as a mother "Matko-Polsko"

Similarly there's 'język ojczysty' rather than matczyny (though there is 'mowa matczyna' for 'motherese')

Motherland and fatherland both exist in English but for me (American) have different connotations, you protect the motherland and serve the fatherland (if that makes sense....)

Father means ojciec, and Fatherland means the land of our fathers. 'Ziemia naszych ojcow' = Ojczyzna

Alas the origin of the word could have been derived from a father but that tricky it could mean as well ancestors. Would you please not reference the Irish in this argument. As I said the guy on YouTube is not Irish. He's a Geordie. The accent is that of the North East of England. So there is no Irish voice in this debate on Polish Independence Day. But if you want one, I personally find it at odds with the fact that around most of Europe it's Remberance Day for the dead of World War One (and Two of course but it's the original Armistice Day). For me, I always think of Flanders Fields on that day.

Same thing happens here in the U.S. Doug, people in rural America celebrate with picnics and parties, people in the big cities turn confrontational trying to promote their political views on this day of remembrance.
