Snap! Many that I've seen are about as flirtacious as a dead frog without a drink or 4 inside them. Maybe it's just because I'm not looking for it but they just like to chat in pubs and that shouldn't be mistaken for being flirtacious.

We're forever hearing how standoffish and sullen Poles are, now they're being called flirtatious?? They don't even smile!

and how would you possibly be sure about that? hehehe...

people's experiences differ... yes, people here stated that Poles don't smile... i somehow agree with that after seeing every day smilling Americans... but i prefer less bullshit, so i don't mind not smilling people...

This is always the defense of the non-smilers though:

"Smiling" nations go around grinning from ear to ear about nothing - like simpletons.

And/or

People who smile are somehow "false" or something.

Both of which are far too simplistic and actually, a bit insulting.

On topic though, I do think Polish women are a bit flirtatious - perfectly possible without smiling much I should add.

OK, well put it this way: Poles in my opinion are quite formal in terms of social conduct/etiquette etc and therefore there is plenty of pan/pani, prosze, handshaking/kissing etc thrown around.

Obviously they don't always mean it - convention just dictates that they should do this.

Similarly, a cliché, but "it's nice to be nice" - why not adress someone with a smile? It's just being pleasant. You don't have to do it but it's polite to be approachable, that's all.

It's no more false than going through the handshaking and pan/pani motions when you don't actually like the person.

If I don't like somebody then pan/pani is the only way to go! Going by the first name is for the people I like.

Pan/pani creates considerable distance. It's simple but works perfectly.

Polish women flirt all the time.We have an expression here in Greece like going searching or going for trouble.

I think that's not just me, it's the whole idea of the pan/pani thing. In Poland, when you let somebody call you by your first name, you allow the person into the inner circle, so to say - grant them a whole package of rights and priviledges which you wouldn't like to grant to just anybody.

In the English-speaking countries the clues are different, as you call everybody by their first name, you need different signals to discern between the outer and inner circles.

Simple projecting signals from one culture onto another often leads to confusion and misunderstandings.

Now, a smile for you is like pan/pani for us - one is supposed to show politeness and approachability, the other - respect, bot both are just social conventions and can be equally phoney and if you take them on face value, you may end up bitterly disappointed.

OK, to make a long story short: a smile for Poles is not so much the matter of a social convention. Therefore in Poland you see less smiles, but if you see one, the chance is bigger that it's genuine.

It's all a matter of social codes ;)

That's a fair point. The Poles are more sincere and, indeed, frank with their emotions than Brits, for example. Go to nightclubs and you'll see some flirting but mostly by guys. The girls tend to dance and then chat amongst themselves. Guys tend to be friends and brought along only to gas to and get an earbashing ;) ;)

This also speaks well of when my smiling Polish girl was grinning at me! :)
