Polish Wedding present - how much money for the couple?

I think it's a class thing in the West tbh InPolska - I have attended a wide variety of weddings and the one held in a nightclub on Brighton seafront with a chocolate fountain and all night bar was the one where guests brought envelopes with cash....if we had done that at the 'posh' one with a marquee and sit down dinner, I could just imagine!! It would have gone down like a sack of shyte!

It's a class thing in the West, but it is not a class thing in Poland. But you know Rozu, this is InPolska all over.

Although I am very shocked by this Polish "tradition", which I found most vulgar

It's incredibly vulgar. It's also thoughtless - it's easy to slip cash into an envelope, but there's nothing personal or thoughtful about it.

Mind you, the most vulgar thing is when people openly ask for cash. That's just tasteless as hell.

It's just about OK if you have a wide range of things, but yeah, I still think it's tacky as hell.

Apparently some cousin of mine expected people to buy her all sorts of expensive crap and then got angry when everyone started to mysteriously drop out. Lollerskates.

you 'cannot beat the system.' It is part of a tradition in Poland to give money,

I first found out about this a few years ago when I was invited to go to a wedding in Poland by a couple I really didn't even know that well. When I mentioned to a friend that I was surprised to have been invited, I was told that probably it was because of the money they would be expecting......and she was very likely right. Why else would you invite someone you don't really know to share your day with?

Since then I have been to 2 Polish weddings in the UK, there was none of that giving of money in evidence, although both weddings were registry office and not church affairs.

To be honest, I was more shocked at your revelation that the happy couple would tell all and sundry what amounts had been given!

I'd never, ever tell who gave me what to anyone else, that's simply ludicrous

Thank god for that!

They tell you who gave what? Omg I didn't know. That's sad.

I doubt that happens

I've been to god knows how many wedding ssince I moved here and I've never, even once, heard of this.
Maybe it did happen but that couple are obviously scumbags
